This paper describes the optimal design of an AWG spectrum to meet various specifications and improve some physical parameters. The objective function is the norm of the difference between design parameters and target values. To obtain the design parameters, the Fourier model is employed and the design variables arc spacing of array waveguide, width of array waveguide, optical path difference, and focal length. The (1+1) Evolution Strategy is employed as the optimization tool. The optimization procedure is applied to a 16-channel AWG and the optimized design variables will considerably improve the system performance.

Process optimization is carried out to determine process parameters which satisfy the given design requirement and constraint conditions in sheet metal forming processes. Sensitivity -based-approach is utilized for the optimum searching of process parameters in sheet metal forming precesses. The scheme incorporates an elasto-plastic finite element method with shell elements . Sensitivities of state variables are calculated from the direct differentiation of the governing equation for the finite element analysis. The algorithm developed is applied to design of the variablc blank holding force in deep drawing processes. Results show that determination of process parameters is well performed to control the major strain for preventing fracture by tearing or to decrease the amount of springback for improving the shape accuracy. Results demonstrate that design of process parameters with the present approach is applicable to real sheet metal forming processes.
This paper describes the optimal design of a multi-layered surface plasmon resonance sensors to meet various specifications and improve some physical parameters. Dip 3 dB bandwidth and depth were chosen as design parameters and the objective function was the norm of the difference between design parameters and target values. The design variables are thicknesses of each layer and to obtain the design parameters, the optical admittance method was employed. The (1+1) evolution strategy was employed as an optimization tool. By applying the proposed optimization procedure to a 3-layered sensor, the optimized design variables considerably improved the 3 dB bandwidth by 4.8 nm and the dip depth by 1.1 dB.
In this study, a non-stationary random earthquake Clough-Penzien model is used to describe earthquake ground motion. Using stochastic direct integration in combination with an equivalent linear method, a solution is established to describe the non-stationary response of lead-rubber bearing (LRB) system to a stochastic earthquake. Two parameters are used to develop an optimization method for bearing design: the post-yielding stiffness and the normalized yield strength of the isolation bearing. Using the minimization of the maximum energy response level of the upper structure subjected to an earthquake as an objective function, and with the constraints that the bearing failure probability is no more than 5% and the second shape factor of the bearing is less than 5, a calculation method for the two optimal design parameters is presented. In this optimization process, the radial basis function (RBF) response surface was applied, instead of the implicit objective function and constraints, and a sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithm was used to solve the optimization problems. By considering the uncertainties of the structural parameters and seismic ground motion input parameters for the optimization of the bearing design, convex set models (such as the interval model and ellipsoidal model) are used to describe the uncertainty parameters. Subsequently, the optimal bearing design parameters were expanded at their median values into first-order Taylor series expansions, and then, the Lagrange multipliers method was used to determine the upper and lower boundaries of the parameters. Moreover, using a calculation example, the impacts of site soil parameters, such as input peak ground acceleration, bearing diameter and rubber shore hardness on the optimization parameters, are investigated.

Seismic design provisions in Korea has developed based on seismic provisions in United States (e.g., ATC 3-06). Current seismic design provisions in U .S. is moving toward adopting enhanced concept for design. Federal Emergence Management Agency (FEMA) Provides the NEHRP recommended Provisions for the Development of Seismic Regulations for New Buildings which can be used as a source document for use by any interested members of the building community. Current seismic design provisions in U .S. generally use a uni-level force. These provisions can not be satisfied if the limit state design is concerned. Limit state can be defined as a state causing undesirable performance o( a structure (e .g., serviceability, ultimate, buckling, etc.). Even if there are provision for controlling drift by two levels, it is still difficult to satisfy limit states using uni-level force. Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) uses a hi-level forces Int seismic loadings which can satisfy serviceability and ultimate limit state. However, the seismic parameters used in AIJ guideline are basically determined by subjective manner of code committee member and professions. These parameters need to be determined based on target quantities (target reliability, target energy dissipation, target displacement, target stress level, etc.). This study develops the method to determine the sesmic design parameters based on a certain taget level. Reliability is used as a target level and load factors in ANSI/ASCE 7-88 are selected as design parameters to be determined.
Statement of problem: The researches on the influence of design variables on the stress distribution in cortical and trabecular bones and on optimal design for implant system were limited. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the sensitivities of design parameters and to suggest the optimal parameters for designing the onebody type implant system. Material and methods: Stresses arising in the implant system were obtained by finite element analysis using a three dimensional model. An onebody type implant system[Oneplant (Warrantec. Co. Ltd., Korea)] was considered in this study. Vortical load(150 N) was applied on the top of the abutment along the axial direction. The initial design variables set for sensitivity analysis were radius of fixture, numbers of micro thread, numbers of power thread, height of micro thread, future length, tapered angle of future, inclined angle of thread, width of micro thread and width of power thread. The statistical technique of Design of Experiments(DOE) was applied tn the simulation model to deduce effective design parameters on stress distributions in bones. The deduced design parameters were incorporated into a fully automated design tool which is coupled with the finite element analysis and numerical optimization to determine the optimal design parameters. Results: 1. The result of sensitivity analysis showed six design variables - radius of future, tapered angle of fixture, inclined angle of thread, numbers of power thread, numbers of micro thread and height of micro thread - were more influential than the others. 2. The optimal values of design variables can be deduced by coupling finite element analysis (FEA) and design optimization tool(DOT).

This paper presents a preform design method that combines the analytic method and inference of known knowledge with neural network. The analytic method is a finite element method that is used to simulate backward extrusion with pre-defined process parameters. The multi-layer network and back-propagation algorithm are utilized to learn the training examples from the simulation results. The design procedures are utilized to learn the training examples from the simulation results. The design procedures are two methods the first the neural network infer the deformed shape from the pre-defined processes parameters. The other the network infer the processes parameters from deformed shape. Especially the latest method is very useful to design the preform From the desired feature it is possible to determine the processes parameters such as friction stroke and tooling geometry. The proposed method is useful for shop floor to decide the processes parameters and preform shapes for producing sound product.
Three-dimensional experimental analysis was conducted in the pulverizer simplified isothermal model. The experiment model was constructed on a 1/3.5 scale of 500MW pulverizer. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of design parameters on the pulverized coal separator efficiency. Where used pulverized coal separator design parameters are guide vane angle, static classifier angle, dynamic classifier rpm. Taguchi method was used to find the effective design parameters related to pulverized coal separator efficiency. The results of the experiment showed that guide vane angle and dynamic classifier rpm were the design key parameters. In addition to the total number of experiment cases were reduced by Taguchi method.

In order to design the hull form of an underwater vehicle in the conceptual design phase, the dynamic characteristics depending on the hull form parameters should be identified. Course-keeping stability, turning ability, yaw-checking ability, and mission competence are set to be the indices of the dynamic characteristics, and the geometric parameters for the bare hull and rudder are set to be the hull form design parameters. The total sensitivity of the dynamic characteristics with respect to the hull form parameters is calculated by the chain rule of the partial sensitivity of the dynamic characteristics with respect to the hydrodynamic coefficients, and the partial sensitivity of the hydrodynamic coefficients with respect to the hull form parameters. Based on the sensitivity analysis, important hull form parameters are selected, and those optimal values to satisfy the required intercept time of mission competence of a specific underwater vehicle and turning rate are estimated.

This study was conducted to derive optimal design floods by generalized gamma distribution model of the annual maximum series at eight watersheds along Geum, Yeongsan and Seomjin river systems. Design floods obtained by different methods for evaluation of parameters and for plotting positions in the generalized gamma distribution model were compared by the relative mean errors and graphical fit along with 95% confidence limits plotted on gamma probability paper. The results were analyzed and summarized as follows. 1. Basic statistics and parameters were calculated by the generalized gamma distribution model using different methods for parameters. 2. Design floods according to the return periods were obtained by different methods for evaluation of parameters and for plotting positions in the generalized gamma distribution model. 3. It was found that design floods derived by sundry averages method for parameters and Cunnane method for plotting position in the generalized gamma distribution are much closer to those of the observed data in comparison with those obtained by the other methods for parameters and for plotting positions from the viewpoint of relative mean errors. 4. Reliability of design floods derived by sundry averages method in the generalized gamma distribution was acknowledged within 95% confidence interval.
