This study aims to develop an efficient mold structure for the injection molding of a subminiature lens, using shell-type runners instead of traditional cylindrical runners. While the shell runner has the advantage of shorter cooling time due to its thinner geometry, this smaller thickness causes an increase in injection pressure. In this study, the design of the shell runner was modified to contain multiple holes for the purpose of reducing injection pressure. Numerical analyses were performed for shell runners of various hole-shapes, and the resulting filling and cooling characteristics were discussed; the rhombic hole showed the best result for both filling and cooling characteristics. Subsequently, injection molding experiments were performed using an injection mold fabricated based on the rhombic design. The lens parts were successfully molded with highly-reduced cycle time and without degradation of part quality.

Ultra-low-head is an unexplored classification among the sites in which hydroelectric power can be produced. This is typically owing to the low power output and the economic value of the turbines available in this segment. A turbine capable of operating in an ultra-low-head condition without the need of a dam to produce electricity is developed in this study. A gate structure installed at a shallow water channel acting as a weir generates artificial head for the turbine mounted on the gate to produce power. The turbine and generator are designed to be compact and submersible for an efficient and silent operation. The gate angle is adjustable to operate the turbine at varying flow rates. The turbine is designed and tested using computational fluid dynamics tools prior to manufacturing and experimental studies. A parametric study of the runner blade parameters is conducted to obtain the most efficient blade design with minimal hydraulic losses. These parameters include the runner stagger and runner leading edge flow angles. The selected runner design showed improved hydraulic characteristics of the turbine to operate in an ultra-low-head site with minimal losses.
A new design based on the appropriate geometry of molded part and type of runner system under the optimal processing conditions was proposed to minimize the micro weld lines on the sub deco surface molded by two shot molding. Theoretical and experimental studies were conducted to examine the cause of the weld lines during the overmolding process in two shot molding. Various dimensions and geometries of substrate$(1^{st}shot)$ and the wall thickness of overmold$(2^{nd}shot)$ have been proposed to avoid the weld lines which are the most inevitable appearance defects occurred on the sub deco. The each design proposal was analyzed by mold flow analysis after part modeling. The analysis results were compared with molded part from mass production tool. It could be seen that from the analysis that the proper geometry of plastic part and type of runner system considering pressure drop under the optimal processing conditions were the most influential factors to avoid weld lines occured on the sub deco.
In this paper, in order to improve the formability and quality of the injection molded parts in the molds for molding the motorcycle rear cowl injection molded parts with different volumes at the same time, the flow of the molded parts is changed through the injection molding CAE analysis by changing the gate position, runner size and position. It is to find the optimum gate position, the diameter of the runner and the position where the balance is equal. The molded article formed by the optimization resulted in the uniformity of the molten resin at the same time at the corner of the product, thereby maintaining the flow balance favorable for mass production at lower injection pressure.

In the Semi-Solid Diecasters design, a Seni-Solid Diecasters experiment has usually been carried out before producing new casts. At the Semi-Solid Diecasting stages, the runner-gate part has been always repeatedly corrected, which leads to a tedious processing time and high processing cost. Much experience is essential in manual assessment and if the design is defective, much time and a great deal of efforts will be wasted in the modification of the die. In this study, a design system has been developed based on the design database In addition, a gate experiment for the gating system design has been tarried out to append the database. It is possible for engineers to make efficient gating system design of Semi-Solid Diecasting and it will result in the reduction of expenses and time to be required.

Exhausting fossil fuel and increasing concern of air pollution have brought on the change of the focus of developing new vehicles from performance to fuel economy and emission. The gasoline engines adopting the naturally aspirated way use the throttle-body for engine load control. Therefore, its pumping loss increases more than that of the diesel engine, and also mostly operating in a partial load condition has bad influence on fuel economy and emission. In these days, the continuous variable valve timing system and variable induction system are adopted in order to improve fuel consumption and emission. In this study, we optimize the runner length and operate region of variable induction system to simulataneously improve the performance, fuel economy, and emission of gasoline engine with employing GT-Power as a CAE tool for engine analysis and PIAnO as PIDO tool for process integration and design optimization.

In this work, a preliminary design of an inlet guide vane and runner for developing a 2.5 kW hydraulic turbine was conducted by using computational fluid dynamic analysis. Three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with shear stress transport turbulence model were used to analyze the fluid flow in the hydraulic turbine. The hexahedral grid system was used to construct computational domain, and the grid dependency test was performed to obtain the optimal grid system. Velocity triangle diagram considering the flow angles of the inlet guide vane and runner was analyzed to obtain a basic geometry of the inlet guide vane and runner. Through modification of the preliminary design, the hydraulic performances of the turbine have improved under overall drop conditions. Especially, the efficiency and power of the turbine increased by 0.95% and 1.45%, respectively, compared to those of the reference model.
Casting defects produced during the casting process seriously affect the mechanical properties of the resulting products, reduce the performance capabilities of the product, and also result in economic losses. Therefore, this paper mainly investigates the causes of defects and methods by which to reduce these defects stemming from molten metal flows in a runner system of the type widely used in the sand mold casting process. The flow characteristics of a molten alloy are difficult to observe during the actual casting process. For this reason, a water model was used to observe the flow in the casting process, and the flow in each case was recorded using high-speed cameras as part of the experimental process of this study. Several repetitive experiments were performed to improve the accuracy of the experimental results. The traditional casting system was modified according to the design rules proposed by Campbell, and the system was termed flow-adaptive gating system with a water model. Comparing the flow characteristics of traditional and adaptive gating systems with a water model shows that the bubbles in the water in the latter case are reduced more significantly than in the former case. A ceramic filter system was adapted to the flow-adaptive gating system to minimize the instability of the flow during filling, which occurs as the fluid velocity in the runner increases. In additional, the flow behavior with and without the filter system were compared. The water model system in this work was shown to be able to verify that the adaptation of the filter system brings improvements by stabilizing the flow and reducing the amount of bubbles in the runner system. Moreover, using the flow-adaptive runner system with the filter system leads to considerably stable flows in the runner system.

The current scenario of the transportation sector reflects the urgent need to address issues such as depletion of traditional fuel reserves and ever growing pollution levels. Researchers around the world are focussing on alternatives as well as optimisation of currently employed devices to reduce the pollution levels generated by the commonly used fuels. One such optimisation involves the study of air flow within the intake manifolds of SI engines. It is a well-known fact that alterations in the air manifolds of engines have a significant impact on the engine performance parameters, fuel consumption and emission levels. Previous works have demonstrated the impacts of runner lengths, diameter, plenum volume, taper angle of distribution manifolds and other factors on in-cylinder fluid motion and engine performance. However, a static setup provides an optimal configuration only at a specific engine speed. This paper aims to investigate the variations in the same parameters on a four stroke, naturally aspirated single cylinder SI engine through varying the cross section design over the intake runner with the aid of Computational Fluid Dynamics. The system consists of segments that form the intake runner with projections on the inside that allow various permutations of the intake runner segments. The various configurations provide the optimised fluid flow characteristics within the intake manifold at specific engine speed intervals. The variations such as turbulence, air fuel mixing are analysed using the three dimensional CFD software FLUENT. The results can be used further for developing an automated or manually adjustable intake manifold.
