  • Because of the orthotropic elastic properties and significant two-way bending action, orthotropic plate theory may be suitable for describing the behavior of concrete filled grid bridge decks. Current AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specification(2004) has live load moment equations considering flexural rigidity ratio between longitudinal and transverse direction, but the Korea highway bridge design specification(2005) doesn't. The Korea highway bridge standard specification LRFD(1996) considers an orthotropic plate model with a single load to estimate live load moments in concrete filled grid bridge decks, which may not be conservative. This paper presents live load moment equations for truck and passenger car, based on orthotropic plate theory. The equations of truck model use multiple presence factor, impact factor, design truck and design tandem of the Korea highway bridge standard specification LRFD(1996). The estimated moments are verified through finite-element analyses.

  • This paper describes the design processes and evaluation results of a small-sized six-axis force/torque sensor. The new six-axis force/torque sensor including S-type structure has been developed using a parallel plate structure as a basic sensing element. In order tominimize coupling errors, the location of strain gages has been determined based on the finite element analysis and the connections of strain gages have been made such that the bridge circuit with 4 strain gages becomes balanced. Several design modifications result in a similar strain sensitivity for six-axis forces and moments, and the reduced coupling errors of 2.6% FS between each forces and moments. Calibration test results show that the six-axis load cell developed which has light weight of 135g and the maximum capacities of 196 N in forces and 19.6 N.m in moments is estimated to be within 7.1% FS in coupling error.

  • This study was carried out to select optimal probability distribution based on design accumulated monthly mean inflow from the viewpoint of drought by Gamma (GAM), Generalized extreme value (GEV), Generalized logistic (GLO), Generalized normal (GNO), Generalized pareto (GPA), Gumbel (GUM), Normal (NOR), Pearson type 3 (PT3), Wakeby (WAK) and Kappa (KAP) distributions for the observed accumulative monthly mean inflow of Chungjudam. L-moment ratio was calculated using observed accumulative monthly mean inflow. Parameters of 10 probability distributions were estimated by the method of L-moments with the observed accumulated monthly mean inflow. Design accumulated monthly mean inflows obtained by the method of L-moments using different methods for plotting positions formulas in the 10 probability distributions were compared by relative mean error (RME) and relative absolute error (RAE) respectively. It has shown that the design accumulative monthly mean inflow derived by the method of L-moments using Weibull plotting position formula in WAK and KAP distributions were much closer to those of the observed accumulative monthly mean inflow in comparison with those obtained by the method of L-moment with the different formulas for plotting positions in other distributions from the viewpoint of RME and RAE.

  • Recently, it is much more required to approach the accurate shaft alignment analysis according to the tendency of active showing in large container vessel and that of the heavy weight of propeller in connection with it. Shaft alignment calculation lies upon how the pressure apply on bearings properly in operation of main engine and how the stress of shaft puts within that of limit of bearing material and how the movement of shaft is prospected owing to propeller forces and moments. Therefore, we have conducted the shaft alignment calculation of very large container vessel considering the deformation of hull structure and the propeller forces and moments and the static and dynamic condition of shaft. The calculation results show the pressure distribution of aft bush and the movement of shaft in bearing. The shaft alignment calculation helps the stable application of shaft alignment, which was proved in sea trial.

  • This paper presents the design of reinforced concrete circular footings subjected to axial load and bending in two directions using a new model. The new model considers the soil real pressure acting on contact surface of the circular footings and these are different, with a linear variation in the contact area, these pressures are presented in terms of the axial load, moments around the axis "X" and the axis "Y". The classical model takes into account only the maximum pressure of the soil for design of footings and it is considered uniform at all points of contact area. Also, a comparison is presented in terms of the materials used (steel and concrete) between the two models shown in table, being greater the classical model with respect the new model. Therefore, the new model is the most appropriate, since it is more economic and also is adjusted to real conditions.

  • Practical stability design method of main members of cable-stayed bridges is proposed and discussed through a design example. For this purpose, initial tensions of stay cables and axial forces of main members are firstly determined using initial shaping analysis of bridges under dead loads. And then the effective buckling length using system elastic/inelastic buckling analysis and bending moments considering $P-{\delta}-{\Delta}$ effect by second-order elastic analysis are calculated for main girder and pylon members subjected to both axial forces and moments, respectively. Particularly, load combinations of dead and live loads, in which maximum load effects due to live loads are obtained, are taken into account and effects of live loads on effective buckling lengths are investigated.

  • There are several important considerations that need to be made in the capacity design of RC frame-wall structures. Capacity design forces will be affected by material overstrength, higher mode effects and secondary loadpaths associated with the 3-dimensional structural response. In this paper, the main issues are identified and different means of predicting capacity design forces are reviewed. In order to ensure that RC frame-wall structures perform well it is explained that the prediction of the peak shears and moments that develop in the walls is particularly important and unfortunately very challenging. Through examination of a number of case study structures it is shown that there are a number of serious limitations with capacity design procedures included in current codes. The basis and potential of alternative capacity design procedures available in the literature is reviewed, and a new simplified capacity design possibility is proposed. Comparison with the results of 200 NLTH analyses of frame-wall structures ranging from 4 to 20 storeys suggest that the new method is able to predict wall base shears and mid-height wall moments reliably. However, efforts are also made to highlight the uncertainty with capacity design procedures and emphasise the need for future research on the subject.

  • The excitation forces from the periodical firing pressure in cylinder and the rotating crank mechanism cause lots of vibration problems in diesel engine. In this paper, the theoretical formulas for excitation forces are introduced and computational program for the optimization of crank angle is also developed to reduce the free moments in diesel engine. The computational results of 4-stroke in-line engine are applied to verify the reliability of the program.

  • Lateral-torsional buckling moment resistances of I-shaped stepped beams with continuous lateral top-flange bracing under a single point load on the top flange and negative end moments were investigated. Stepped beam factors and a moment gradient correction factor suggested by Park et al. (2003, 2004) were used to develop new lateral buckling formula for beam designs. From the investigation of finite element analysis (FEA), new lateral buckling formula of beams with singly or doubly stepped member changes and with continuous lateral top-flange bracing subjected to a single point load on top flange and end moments were developed. The new design equation includes the length-to-height ratio factor to account for the increase of lateral-torsional buckling moment resistance as the increase of length-to-height ratio of stepped beams. The calculation examples for obtaining lateral-torsional buckling moment resistance using the new design equation indicate that engineers should easily determine the buckling capacity of the stepped beams.
