Permanent deformation plays a key role in performance based earthquake resistant design. In order to estimate permanent deformation after earthquake, it is essential to secure reliable response history analysis(RHA) as well as earthquake scenario. This study focuses on permanent deformation of an inverted T-type wall under earthquake. The study is composed of two separate parts. The first one is on the verification of RHA and the second one is on an effect of input earthquake motion. The former is discussed in companion paper and the latter in this paper. In order to investigate the effect of an input earthquake motion on the permanent deformation, three bins of spectral matched real earthquake records with different magnitude, regions, epicentral distance are constructed. Parametric study was performed using the verified RHA through the companion paper for each earthquake records in the bins. The most influential parameter affecting permanent displacement is magnitude. The other parameters describing earthquake motion are not significant enough to increase permanent displacement of the inverted T-type wall except for energy related parameters(AI, CI, SEI).

On November 15, 2017, Pohang earthquake occurred. Its local magnitude was announced to be $M_L=5.4$ by Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). Ground motion data recorded at KMA stations were obtained from their data bases. From the data, horizontal and vertical response spectra, and V/H ratio were calculated. The horizontal spectra were defined as GMRotI50 spectra. From the statistical analysis of the GMRotI50 spectra, a mean plus one standard deviation spectrum in lognormal distribution is obtained. Regression analysis is performed on this curve to determine the shape of spectrum including transition periods. Applying the same procedure, the shape and transition periods of vertical spectrum were obtained. These results were compared with theKorean standard design spectra, which were developed from domestic and overseas intra-plate earthquake records, and Gyeongju earthquake response spectra. The response spectra of Pohang earthquake were found to be almost identical with the newly proposed design spectra. Even the V/H ratios showed good agreement. These results confirmed that the method adopted when developing the standard design spectra were valid and the developed design spectra were reliable.

To secure structures from strong earthquakes occurred recently and design economically seismic isolation design is spread rapidly. Specially, frictional isolator has superiority in application to bridge because it has many advantages. however, because isolator lies between pier and girder, responses of pier and superstructure contradict each other and we need to control the two responses to minimize the bridge's failure probability. In this study, frictional coefficient and horizontal stiffness is defined as design parameters of frictional isolator. the optimal design parameters of frictional isolator to minimize the bridge's failure probability are presented according to strength of earthquake and soil conditions. The result says that optimal friction coefficient is higher as the strength of earthquake is increased. And it is also higher as the soils are more flexible. But, optimal horizontal stiffness of rubber spring is insensitive to strength of earthquake and soil condition.

In this study, a design procedure for the practical application of the dampers to building structures under earthquake loads was presented by using earthquake response spectrum. Nonlinear time history results using a 10 story building structure installed with damper verified the effectiveness of the proposed procedure by showing that the structural response could be reduced to the target performance level for seismic loads. Since the proposed design procedures are based on response spectrum seismic analysis result of the original structure, the capacity, location and the number of damper and the consequent response reduction effects can be preliminarily determined without performing the nonlinear time history analysis.

The seismic design guidelines for the pile-supported marginal wharf structures are studied. Various design codes such as AASHTO code or UBC code, which are focused on general structures, may be referred for the design of the wharf structures. However, in developing domestic design code, special consideration should be made concerning the size of the earthquake and the type of the structure. This study aims at the comparison among the various design codes for a specific wharf structure in the process of developing a domestic design code.

For the earthquake resistance design designer should provide that structural yielding process is principally designed with the ductile failure mechanism. In order to get the ductile failure mechanism for typical bridges, pier columns yielding should occur before that of connections. However domestic bridge design with unnecessary stiff substructure leads to unnecessary seismic loads and makes it difficult to get the ductile failure mechanism. Such a problem arises from the situation that earthquake resistant design is not carried out in the preliminary design step. In this study a typical bridge is selected as an analysis bridge and design strengths for connections and pier columns are determined in the preliminary design step by carrying out earthquake resistant design. It is shown through this procedure that it is possible to get the ductile failure mechanism with structural members determined by other design.

Modern wind turbines have been mainly erected in region where earthquake are rare or normally weak, especially Korea was thought as safety zone from earthquake. But recently, the earthquake occurs more and more frequently. So, the wind turbine design is required the structural and functional stability under the earthquake. The earthquake can influence normal operation, even if a weak earthquake. There are two ways to review the design under earthquake using Computer Applied Engineering (CAE). One is the Response Spectrum Analysis (RSA) the other is Time History Analysis (THA). In this research, dynamic response on time is obtained under the earthquake by taking into account ground accelerogram consistent with the relevant standards applied to the turbine foundation.
Post earthquake fire (PEF) can lead to the collapse of buildings that are partially damaged in a prior ground-motion that occurred immediately before the fire. The majority of standards and codes for the design of structures against earthquake ignore the possibility of PEF and thus buildings designed with those codes could be too weak when subjected to a fire after an earthquake. An investigation based on sequential analysis inspired by FEMA356 is performed here on the Life-Safety performance level of structures designed to the ACI 318-08 code after they are subjected to two different earthquake levels with PGA of 0.35 g and 0.25 g. This is followed by a four-hour fire analysis of the weakened structure, from which the time it takes for the weakened structure to collapse is calculated. As a benchmark, the fire analysis is also performed for undamaged structure and before occurrence of earthquake. The results show that the vulnerability of structures increases dramatically when a previously damaged structure is exposed to PEF. The results also show the damaging effects of post earthquake fire are exacerbated when initiated from second and third floor. Whilst the investigation is for a certain class of structures (regular building, intermediate reinforced structure, 3 stories), the results confirm the need for the incorporation of post earthquake fire in the process of analysis and design and provides some quantitative measures on the level of associated effects.

There has been an increasing demand for introducing a base isolation system to secure the seismic safety of a nuclear power plant. However, the design criteria and the safety assessment methodology of a base isolated nuclear facility are still being developed. A performance based design concept for the base isolation system needs to be added to the general seismic design procedures. For the base isolation system, the displacement responses of isolators excited by the extended design basis earthquake are important as well as the design displacement. The possible displacement response by the extended design basis earthquake should be limited less than the failure displacement of the isolator. The failure of isolators were investigated by an experimental test to define the ultimate strain level of rubber bearings. The uncertainty analysis, considering the variations of the mechanical properties of isolators and input ground motions, was performed to estimate the probabilistic distribution of the isolator displacement. The relationship of the displacement response by each ground motion level was compared in view of a period elongation and a reduction of damping. Finally, several examples of isolator parameters are calculated and the considerations for an acceptable isolation design is discussed.

The seismic hazard of Korea is briefly described. The seismic design requirements design earthquake levels and design response spectrum that are going to be adopted in the future code system are introduced. Characteristics of ground motion and seismic responses of structures in low to moderate seismicity regions are briefly described. The concept of limited ductility design that seems appropriate for the seismic design in Korea is explained.
