In this study, a satellite payload module was optimized by considering local stabilities. As design constraints in the satellite structure, local instabilities such as wrinkling, dimpling, crippling for honeycomb structures and crippling failure mode for beams were considered in addition to frequency and stress constraints. The constraints for the local instabilities (uncommon in general structures) were taken for the optimization of a satellite structures under severe launching environments. The analysis was performed combining the finite element analysis and optimization program. From the optimization results, it was found that frequency, crippling and wrinkling were the most critical constraints to achieve the design goals. Also, the importance of each design variable was estimated. Finally, the optimum design of the payload module was achieved for various design constraints and design parameters.

In this paper, the design optimization of structures with stress constraints is performed using isogeometric shape optimization method. The stress constraints have an important role in design optimization problems since stress concentration could result in structural failure. To represent exact geometry in analysis, the isogeometric analysis method uses the same basis functions as used in the CAD geometry. The geometrically exact model can be used in both stress and design sensitivity analyses so that it can yield more precise optimal design than finite element one. Through numerical examples, the isogeometric approach turns out to be effective in shape optimization problems under stress constraints.

Design variables and design parameters are rarely deterministic in practice. Robust optimal design takes into consideration of the uncertainties in the design variables and parameters. Robust optimization methodology with probability constraints requires a lot of system analyses fer calculating failure probability of each constraint. By introducing an envelope function to reduce the number of constraints, efficiency of robust optimization techniques can be considerably improved. Through four illustrative examples, it is shown that the number of system analyses is greatly decreased while little differences in the optimum results are observed.
Design characteristics of PMLSM(Permanent Magnet Linear Synchronous Motor) considering the dynamic running condition under the limited input voltage and current for short reciprocating trajectory are presented. Particularly, the dynamic constraints resulted from the dynamic capability of PMLSM and the required motional performance of the repeated short stroke are applied to determine the design specification of PMLSM. In addition, optimal design flow based on the dynamic constraints is specified with the design parameters, such as coil resistances, the EMF constants, inductances, pole-pitch. Furthermore, proposed methods and results are validated by the experimental ones measured with the purpose-built prototype.
We present the optimum design for the cross-sectional(sizing) and shape optimization of truss structures with natural frequency constraints. The optimum design method used in this paper employs continuous design variables and the Harmony Search Algorithm(HSA). HSA is a meta-heuristic search method for global optimization problems. In this paper, HSA uses the method of random number selection in an update process, along with penalty parameters, to construct the initial harmony memory in order to improve the fitness in the initial and update processes. In examples, 10-bar and 72-bar trusses are optimized for sizing, and 37-bar bridge type truss and 52-bar(like dome) for sizing and shape. Four typical truss optimization examples are employed to demonstrate the availability of HSA for finding the minimum weight optimum truss with multiple natural frequency constraints.
We have many simulation constraints to meet as a modeled system becomes large and complex. Real-time simulations are the examples in that they are constrained by certain non-function constraints (e.g., timing constraints). In this paper, an enhanced hierarchical modeling methodology is proposed to efficiently deal with constraint-simulations. The proposed modeling method enhances hierarchical modeling methods to provide multi-resolution model. A simulation model is composed by determining the optimal level of abstraction that is guaranteed to meet the given simulation constraints. Four modeling activities are defined in the proposed method: 1) Perform the logical architectural design activity to produce a multi-resolution model, 2) Organize abstraction information of the multi-resolution model with AT (Abstraction Tree) structure, 3) Formulate the given constraints based on U (Integer Programming) approach and embrace the constraints to AT, and 4) Compose a model based on the determined level of abstraction with which the multi-resolution model can satisfy all given simulation constraints. By systematically handling simulation constraints while minimizing the modeler's interventions, we provide an efficient modeling environment for constraint-simulations.
Genetic algorithms (GA) is a well known technique that is capable of handling multiobjective functions and discrete constraints in the process of numerical optimization. Together with the Pareto ranking scheme, more than one possible solution can be obtained despite the imposed constraints and multi-criteria design functions. In view of this unique capability, the design of the log-periodic dipole antenna array (LPDA) using this special feature is proposed in this paper. This method also provides gain, front-back level and S parameter design tradeoff for the LPDA design in broadband application at no extra computational cost.

In this study, a multi-step optimization technique combined with a simple genetic algorithm is introduce to the structural design optimization of a high speed machining center. In this case, the design problem is to find out the best design variables which minimize the static compliance, the dynamic compliance, and the weight of the machine structure and meet some design constraints simultaneously. Dimensional thicknesses of the thirteen structural members along the static force loop of the machine structure are adopted as design variables. The first optimization step is a static design optimization, in which the static compliance and the weight are minimized under some dimensional and safety constraints. The second step is a dynamic design optimization, where the dynamic compliance and the weight are minimized under the same constraints. After optimization, the weight of the moving body was reduced to 9.1% of the initial design respectively. Both static and dynamic compliances of the optimum design are also in the feasible range even thought they were slightly increased than before.
In this study size optimization of large-scale dome structures with dynamic constraints is presented. In the optimal design of these structure, the Jaya algorithm is used to find minimal size of design variables. The design variables are the cross-sectional areas of the steel truss bar elements. To take into account the constraints which are the first five natural frequencies of the structures, the finite element analysis is coded in Matlab programs using eigen values of the stiffness matrix of the dome structures. The Jaya algorithm and the finite elements codes are combined by the help of the Matlab - GUI (Graphical User Interface) programming to carry out the optimization process for the dome structures. To show the efficiency and the advances of the Jaya algorithm, 1180 bar dome structure and the 1410 bar dome structure were tested by taking into the frequency constraints. The optimal results obtained by the proposed algorithm are compared with those given in the literature to demonstrate the performance of the Jaya algorithm. At the end of the study, it is concluded that the proposed algorithm can be effectively used in the optimal design of large-scale dome structures.

An interactive and iterative design method based on the constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) technique was developed to generate an ergonomically sound layout of a control panel. This control panel layout method attempts to incorporate a variety of relevant ergonomic principles and design constraints, and generate an optimal or, at least, a "satisfactory" solution through iterative interactions with the designer. The existing panel design and layout methods are mostly based on the optimization of single objective function formulated to reflect and trade off all ergonomic design objectives which are largely different in their nature. In fact, the problem of seeking an ergonomically sound panel design should be viewed as a multiple objective optimization problem. Furthermore, most of the design objectives should be understood as constraints rather than objectives to be optimized. Hence, a constraint satisfaction approach is proposed in this study as a framework for the panel designer to search through the design decision space effectively and make various design decisions iteratively. In order to apply the constraint satisfaction approach to the panel design procedure, the ergonomic principles such as frequency-of-use, importance, functional grouping, and sequence-of-use are formalized as CSP terms. With this formalization, a prototype system was implemented and applied to panel layout problems. The results clearly showed the effectiveness of the proposed approach since it permits designers to consider and iteratively evaluate various design constraints and ergonomic principles, and, therefore, aids the panel designer to come up with an ergonomically sound control panel layout.
