The purpose of this study is to know the important design element for a public library, after analyzing design concept and organization of space of the prize winner at the architectural competition. To carry out the research, the best 31 works between the year of 2005 and 2010 were collected by the architectural magazine A&C published in every other month. During the research, special characters of each prize winner have been analyzed in the aspect of the design concept and the organization of space. While working on the design concept, a factor that created such concept was successfully figured out, and studying on the organization of space enabled us to know the special characters of the interior space. According to the result of the analysis in this study, the design elements which are selected highly frequent are ordered as follows; (1)organization of space, (2)function & shape, (3)circulation, (4)landscape, (5)symbolic aspect. Through the analysis for the organization of space, I reach a conclusion, the frequent type is a "PM-ES-CJ". The study is anticipated to be helpful in understanding the trends in the field of designing a public library, and it is also likely for an architect to use it as a reference.

The main purpose of this dissertation is to develop an integrated approach to sustainable housing development, which would be applied in both academic studios and professional practice. This approach is based upon the concept of sustainability encountered in the process of housing design efficiency. It is concerned with the basic identification of problems and needs, the setting of design goals, and the constraints under which the future design and construction will have to operate. The components of the research approach focus on: (1) the identification of main issues of sustainable architecture (2) the identification of the concept of sustainability as integrated approach for architectural design. (3) the analysis of context between the housing design and the main issues of sustainablility. (4) the identification of the concept of sustainable housing design. Based on these results, this paper suggested the concept of sustainable housing design as integrated approach.

The main objective of this study is to explore methods to generate and develop its design concept of the discord generated due to this by deeply considering the existing design concept of a new town or site planning. In particular, in case when designers participate in a process of planning new town, this study aims to reveal methods generating design strategy and basic ideas for designing street furniture through cases study of projects by understanding and analyzing concept of overall space planning and by developing direction for deployment of specific designs. First, further concepts of the space planning, which decides overall flow of visual design concept of street furniture, is extracted through analyses of basic concepts of space design with doing Focused Group Interview among designers and planners. Then, by applying 3V Design Process, alternatives of the concept generation are suggested through methods of storytelling and visual language under the two approach methods of verbalization stage and visualization stage. Also its process were explored through suggestion of designs by developing each idea of the respective concepts into specific design vocabulary.

Four design codes/regulations for steel structures in Japan are briefly reviewed. Some of them employ the limit state design concept while the others are still based on the allowable stress design concept. The process for revision is now in action. The directions in the development of structural design codes are also reported herein. It is noted that a current trend in this development is to employ the performance-based design concept that has been successfully implemented in some seismic design codes.

According to a progress in the quality of life and economy, recent years have seen an increase in interest in the cruise travel. However, it is important to provide them the optimum embarkation environment since there are to be many and unspecified persons staying for a long period on the cruise ship. In the architectural design field, a wide range of efforts are being recently made to meet customer's requirements by considering the rapidly changing society, environment, and economic trend. The most representative one of such efforts is the inclusive design concept. This concept means to perform design satisfying all the function, convenience, aesthetic appreciation, and utility, regardless of sex, age, ability, nationality, cultural background or any kinds of disabilities. Regarding this trend, the convenience-oriented design of a cruise ship using the inclusive design concept was performed in this study. To do this, the composition of cabins and swimming pools, and the exterior of the cruise ship were classified into several groups through literature survey. Then, in the point of view of the inclusive design concept, inconvenience matters of passengers about the cabins, swimming pools, and exterior were also extracted from literature survey. Next, basis designs for them were selected among the classified groups in order to solve such inconvenience matters. Finally, the convenience-oriented design of the Emerald Princess Cruise considering the inclusive design concept was performed by applying the basis designs. As a result, we can see that the inclusive design concept can be applied to cruise ship design.

본 연구는 광교신도시의 도시공원을 대상으로, 공원이용자들의 설계개념 인지정도와 설계개념이 적용된 공간에 대한 만족도를 조사하고, 설계개념이 만족도에 미치는 영향을 분석하고자 하였다. 이에 센트럴마운틴공원과 호수공원을 대상으로 이용자의 특성, 공원시설에 대한 중요도 - 만족도, 공원의 선호도 - 만족도를 분석하였다. 본 연구에서 도출한 연구결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 공원이용자의 특성을 분석한 결과, 두 공원 모두 일반적으로 가족단위의 이용객이 많았다. 둘째, 산책로가 시설의 중요도와 만족도에서 가장 높은 평가를 받았다. 셋째, 두 공원 전반적인 만족도는 모두 높게 나타났으나, 공원이용자들의 설계인식과 유의한 관계가 나타나지 않았다. 넷째, 공원이용자의 공간별 인식정도와 만족도를 분석한 결과, 두 공원의 설계개념과 설계전략에 대한 인식은 5점 리커드 척도에서 평균 3점 이상으로 높은 정도를 보였다. 하지만, 이용자의 인식정도와 공간별 만족도는 유의한 관계라고 정의하기는 어려웠다. 따라서 본 연구를 통해서 공원이용에 있어 전반적인 만족도에는 설계인식에 대한 인지정도가 거의 영향을 미치지 않는다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 오히려 공간에 대한 이용자의 개인적인 선호도와 만족도가 더 큰 영향을 미친다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 반면, 조사대상지의 계절별 조사가 미흡했다는 점과 대상지가 좀 더 다양하지 못한 한계성을 가지고 있으나, 도시공원의 대표공원이라 할 수 있는 근린공원과 수변공원을 대상으로 공원이용자의 만족도에 설계자의 설계개념과 설계전략이 어느 정도 영향을 미치는지 조사하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

Crashworthiness design concept in the helicopter development is still under evolutionary stage. Survivability in the event of a crash was remarkably improved and this fact can be recognized by the analysis results on the AH-64 Apache and UH-60 Black Hawk crash accidents. Those two models are the first ones in which the crashworthiness design concept was applied with a full-scale requirement. Here we need to notice that under-design of the system results in unexpected injuries and deaths while over-design of the crashworthy elements result in unnecessary weight and costs. If landing gear system would be verified to have enough energy absorption capability in the specified vertical velocity interval, then design requirements of the airframe, fuel system and seats could be modified positively. In this paper, the right and systematic crashworthiness design concept is reviewed on the assumption that design requirements of some crashworthy elements could be partially tailored.

Memory and schema are very similar in terms of human accumulated mental and physical experiences. However, while memory has more personal aspect, schema discussed in this paper has more collective aspect. Schema has been developed through different generations and times, and has become a specific psychological or visual element(s) that can be applied to various fields, such as all, design and architecture. This study focuses on Aldo Rossi's architectural design characteristics based on his 'Autobiographical Concept' as well as personal schema. 'Autobiographical Concept' is the crucial structure supporting Aldo Rossi's distinctive formalization and spatialization. 4 case projects were comparatively analyzed by the 5 elements included in 'Autobiographical Concept'. It was not easy to relate each element to a specific design aspect because the 5 elements are somehow theoretically and conceptually inter-connected each other. Even though it is very difficult to directly relate a conceptual element with a real spatial element, it is found that the 5 elements have some differences in the spatialization process. Thus, in the conclusion, this study attempted to show the unique characteristics of the Aldo Rossi's architectural design process based on his 'Autobiographical Concept'.

This study analyzed the works, introduced in the collections of Thierry Mugler in an aim to identify formative aesthetic and design concepts. As the data to study the creative concepts and expressions of the designer, fashion photographs were gathered in a focus on collections. The formative aesthetic expressed in the works of Thierry Mugler were characterized by the eroticism and the futurism. The formative aesthetic of eroticism were specified into the sexualism, primitivism and fetishism, and those of futurism were divided into the cosmocorps and the grotesque. The eroticism was based on the design concept on the body of woman. The sexuality was expressed through the design concept of opposing, extreme and conversion method. The primitivism was presented through the design concept of extreme method to express a returning to nature and a nostalgia and an adoration for the past. The pieces, expressed the fetishism, was presented through opposing concepts, such as a bondage and an extreme expose. It was indicated that the design concept of futurism was based on the future. The cosmocorps was expressed through the extreme method by using geometrical formative aesthetic and contrast color combination. The grotesque represented the mysterious and abhorrent futurism through the design concept of depaysment conversion and analogy.
