A Parallel Collaborative Sphere Decoder for a MIMO Communication System

  • In this paper, we propose a parallel collaborative sphere decoder with a scalable architecture promising quasi-maximum likelyhood performance with a relatively small amount of computational resources. This design offers a hardware-friendly algorithm using a modified node operation through fixing the variable complexity of the critical path caused by the sequential nature of the conventional sphere decoder (SD). It also reduces the computational complexity compared to the fixed-complexity sphere decoder (FSD) algorithm by tree pruning using collaboratively operated node operators. A Monte Carlo simulation shows that our proposed design can be implemented using only half the parallel operators compared to the approach using an ideal fully parallel scheme such as FSD, with only about a 7% increase of the normalized decoding time for MIMO dimensions of $16{\times}16$ with 16-QAM modulation.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to develop visual complexity metrics based on theoretical bases. Background: With the development of IT technologies, drivers process a large amount of information caused by automotive human-machine interface (HMI), such as a cluster, a head-up display, and a center-fascia. In other words, these systems are becoming more complex and dynamic than traditional driving systems. Especially, these changes can lead to the increase of visual demands. Thus, a concept and tool is required to evaluate the complicated systems. Method: We reviewed prior studies in order to analyze the visual complexity. Based on complexity studies and human perceptual characteristics, the dimensions characterizing the visual complexity were determined and defined. Results: Based on a framework and complexity dimensions, a set of metrics for quantifying the visual complexity was developed. Conclusion: We suggest metrics in terms of perceived visual complexity that can evaluate the in-vehicle displays. Application: This study can provide the theoretical bases in order to evaluate complicated systems. In addition, it can quantitatively measure the visual complexity of In-vehicle information system and be helpful to design in terms of preventing risks, such as human error and distraction.

  • Production components fabricated by metal powder injection molding are analyzed for features to identify the design window for this powder technology. This reverse approach lets the designer see where PIM has a high probability to succeed. The findings show that the most suitable components tend to be less than 25 mm in size and less than 10 g in mass, are slender, and have high complexity.

Analysis of Verification Methodologies Based on a SoC Platform Design

  • In a SoC (system-on-chip) design, a design complexity is a big bottleneck. In order to overcome the design complexity, platform based design method is widely adopted for designers. Most complex SoCs need a heterogeneous design development environment for hardware and software co-design. In this paper, we discuss about some kinds of verification approaches with platform based design methodology at various abstraction levels of SoC design. We separate the verification process to two steps according to the different levels of verification. We employ a flexible SoC design environment to support simultaneous hardware and software development. We demonstrate the verification strategy of a target SoC design, IEEE 802.11a WLAN SoC.

  • 건축디자인을 평가하는 방법에는 상당히 맡은 요소를 고려 할 수 있다. 기능성, 구조성, 형태, 환경 등 다양한 요소를 고려하여 최종의 디자인을 생산해 낸다. 여기서 computer와 같은 자동화된 기계에 의해서 디자인이 생성된다면, 그 결과는 경우에 따라서 무수히 맡아 우리 인간의 평가 능력 범위를 넘는 수 가 있다. 따라서 디자인을 자동으로 생산할 뿐 만 아니라 자동으로 최선의 결과물을 자동적으로 평가하여 선택하는 것도 상당히 중요하다. 본 논문에서는 상기에서 언급한 요소 중 미학적 특성을 기계가 자동으로 평가하여 최적의 결과물을 선택할 수 있도록 평가 방법을 제시하였다. 평가 방법은 고전적으로 내려오는 미적 평가방법의 하나인 질서와 무질서의 상관 관계를 측정하는 것으로 이는 형태요소와 공간관계를 나타내는 형태 디자인 지식의 스키마적 표현을 적용한다.

Reusable HEVC Design in 3D-HEVC

  • This paper proposes a reusable design for the merging process used in three-dimensional High Efficiency Video Coding (3D-HEVC), which can significantly reduce the implementation complexity by eliminating duplicated module redundancies. The majority of inter-prediction coding tools used in 3D-HEVC are utilized through a merge mode, whose extended merging process is based on built-in integration to completely wrap around the HEVC merging process. Consequently, the implementation complexity is unavoidably very high. To facilitate easy market implementation, the design of a legacy codec should be reused in an extended codec if possible. The proposed 3D-HEVC merging process is divided into the base merging process of reusing HEVC modules and reprocessing process of refining the existing processes that have been newly introduced or modified for 3D-HEVC. To create a reusable design, the causal and mutual dependencies between the newly added modules for 3D-HEVC and the reused HEVC modules are eliminated, and the ineffective methods are simplified. In an application of the proposed reusable design, the duplicated reimplementation of HEVC modules, which account for 50.7% of the 3D-HEVC merging process, can be eliminated while maintaining the same coding efficiency. The proposed method has been adopted as a normative coding tool in the 3D-HEVC international standard.

생체모방의 건축적 적용을 위한 프로세스 (Process for the Architectural Application of Biomimicry)

  • Biomimicry architecture has been highlighted in recent years for the innovative ideas from the nature have provided main developments in many areas. The related studies in Korean architecture is entering the first step and are needed close attentions for its vitalizations. This study starts with the acknowledgement of necessity to establish the architectural application process. First of all, it is named as a 'Passive Cycle' if a problem-solving or a project has been through the analysis of process complexity and biomimicry application process in other areas. Then, the basic frame is structured as a 'Process-Cooperation,' which integrates process complexation with process circulation. The cooperative relationship starts from the beginning of the design with not only professionalists related with architecture but also ones in various areas when it is issued a difficult problem or high environmental performance not found in common architectural design processes. To make the architectural application good progress, the characteristics of bio-mimetic architectural applications are categorized as three areas; the expected effect, the application level, and application method. As a result, the organic complexity should be prioritized to have bio-mimetic application effectively while accessing the principles. Therefore, the process for the architectural application of biomimicry is suggested as 'Organic Cycle-Cooperation.'

웹 어플리케이션의 복잡도 예측에 관한 연구 (A Study of Estimation for Web Application Complexity)

  • 개발 패러다임이 점차 복잡한 웹 환경으로 전환되면서 복잡도에 대한 연구가 다시 활발해지고 있으나 아직 웹 어플리케이션의 구조나 복잡도 측정 매트릭에 정립된 이론이 부족한 실정이다. 또한 전통적 복잡도를 측정하는 프로그램 규모(LOC)나 순환복잡도 매트릭은 구현 후에나 알 수 있어 소프트웨어 개발주기 초기의 분석 및 설계 단계에는 큰 도움을 주지 못하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 실무에서 사용되는 6개 웹 프로젝트에 복잡도 인디케이터를 적용하여 결함 가능성이 높은 어플리케이션을 추출한다 추출한 61개의 프로그램을 대상으로 복잡도와 클래스 수 및 메소드 수에 대한 선형적 상관관계를 제안함으로써 웹어플리케이션의 복잡도를 구현 전에 미리 예측 가능하도록 하여 개발 프로세스의 인적 자원 관리나 비용 예측에 기여하고자 한다.

  • 본 연구는 심미적 영향요소 중 하나인 단순$\cdot$복잡이 과연 선호도와 어떠한 관계가 있으며, 다른 심미적 차원들과의 관계를 정립하기 위한 초기 연구 과정 중 하나이다. '제품이 가져야 할 가장 기본적인 기능이 제품 형태에 표현될 때 과연 심미적 영향요소 중의 하나인 단순$\cdot$복잡이 그 기능 표현에 영향을 주는가' 그리고 '기능 표현, 단순 복잡 그리고 선호도와의 관계는 어떠한가'를 알아보는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 선택된 제품들을 범주화하고 각 범주별 제품들을 대상으로 실험하여 범주별 성향을 찾고 이를 기본으로 디자인 프로세스에 적용하여 검증하도록 한다.
