  • We propose an optimal design to improve the capacity by reducing the noise of the intake system. The length and radius of each component of the current Intake system are selected as control factors. We accept the output from computer simulator with orthogonal arrays. Then, the Kriging estimates are computed. From this, we exploit the optimal design of the intake system by adapting simulated annealing. From the results of this optimal design, we conclude that Kriging method with the orthogonal arrays is the efficient method for Design and Analysis of Computer Experiments and we propose the useful results for the low noise intake system.

  • Recently, the engineering designer of injection mould has become more and more dependent on the CAE. In the design factors of injection mould, the shrinkage rate should be considered as one of the important performances to produce the reliable products. therefore the shrinkage rate can be mostly calculated by the MoldFlow and Pro-engineering. in the design process. However it is not easy to predict the shrinkage rate of a plastic injection mold in its design process because the analysis can take minutes to hours, the high computational costs of performing the analysis limit their use in design optimization. In this study, the surrogate models, DACE model, based on the Kriging in order to optimize the shrinkage rate of electric microwave oven window is used in lieu of the original models, facilitating design optimization.

  • This study analyzes the characteristics of two different kinds of squat exercise through physical experiments and a computer simulation, i.e. one with a free weight and the other with a Smith machine are studied. This study also proposes a new design for the Smith machine, which has both the advantages of each type based on the results of the analysis. The muscle force and level of stimulation of the lower extremities during squatting were calculated by running an inverse dynamics analysis program on a musculoskeletal model together with the measured motion data. The calculated results were verified by comparing with the measured EMG data. The analysis showed that squatting using free weight is more effective than squatting using the Smith machine. Meanwhile, in order to design an improved Smith machine, which is the final goal of this study, the trajectory of the barbell of the subjects during free weight squatting was measured on the sagittal plane. The measurement showed that the average slope of the trajectory of the barbell is tilted backward by $10.7^{\circ}$. Based on this measurement, this study proposes a tilted design for an improved Smith machine.

  • In many practical engineering design problems, the form of objective functions is not given explicitly in terms of design variables. Given the value of design variables, under this circumstance, the value of objective functions is obtained by real/computational experiments such as structural analysis, fluid mechanic analysis, thermodynamic analysis, and so on. These experiments are, in general, considerably expensive. In order to make the number of these experiments as few as possible, optimization is performed in parallel with predicting the form of objective functions. Response Surface Methods (RSM) are well known along this approach. This paper suggests to apply Support Vector Machines (SVM) for predicting the objective functions. One of most important tasks in this approach is to allocate sample data moderately in order to make the number of experiments as small as possible. It will be shown that the information of support vector can be used effectively to this aim. The effectiveness of our suggested method will be shown through numerical example which is well known in design of engineering.

  • This study assessed and analysed a result of a product design experiment through Product Data Analytics (PDA), to find reasons for failure of some projects in the experiment. PDA is a computer-based data analysis that uses Product Data Management (PDM) databases as its operational databases. The study examines 20 product design projects in the experiment, which are prepared to follow same product development process by using an identical PDM system. The design result in the PDM database is assessed and analysed by On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) and data mining tools in PDA. The assesment and analysis reveals the lateness in creation of 3D CAD models as the main reason of the failure.

  • In recent years, IoT device and platform become widely popular and the computing performance and capabilities of IoT devices are also getting improved. However, the size and computing resources of IoT devices, especially small single board computer, are limited in a way that the design and implementation of the system should be carefully considered to operate on the devices. Recently, SDR technologies are adapting in IoT devices and can perform various radio systems. Thorough analysis and investigation of computer performances on small single board computer are necessary for its usage. In this paper, we present the results of computing resources measurement and analysis on small single-board computers. At first, we consider to design SDR based spectrum sensing for single board computer, investigate various key factors and propose a design procedure that can affect performance of the system with experiments.

  • The purpose of this study was to model and design a concrete catenary shell using a modern computer program without performing experiments. The modeling idea stems from the study by Pendergrast, but he listed supplementary items that should be improved in his paper. This study aims to resolve those issues and overcome the drawbacks of the study by Pendergrast. The process of experiment for the design of a catenary shell was reproduced by Grasshopper script. In order to ensure credibility, two models designed from the Grasshopper script were analyzed using a finite element program, SAP2000; one is a square-based catenary shell and the other is a special catenary shell called as the Naturtheater $Gr{\ddot{o}}tzingen$ shell, which was completed in 1977. First, the developed modeling approach was proved to be reasonable from the analysis of the square-based shell. The reliability was further confirmed by a comparison between the current and previous analysis results for the Naturtheater $Gr{\ddot{o}}tzingen$ shell.
