  • A study on the public design rules of the government and each local government showed that the historical and cultural street landscape was included in the public design field, but it did not provide a clear evaluation index for the historical and cultural street public design. Against this background, this study intends to provide basic data for the improvement and improvement of the public design of the historical and cultural street in the future by producing an evaluation index for the public design of the historical and cultural street landscape. First, in this study, 6 evaluation indicators and 19 detailed items were derived by conducting expert Delphi survey twice on the basis of previous studies. Second, exploratory factor analysis and AHP analysis were conducted through a survey to verify the validity of the evaluation index and the priority of the index items, and as a result of the analysis, the Cronbach'α coefficient and the consistency ratio were verified. Among the evaluation indicators objectively derived through the above method, the priority was 'historical and culture-related> public-related> safety-related> accessibility-related> lasting-related> related to aesthetic harmony. The results of this study are meaningful in that they can provide basic data for the improvement and improvement of public design of historical and cultural streets in the future.

  • A new sensor system is proposed for measuring damage indexes. The damage index is a physical value that is well correlated to a critical damage in a device or a structure. The mechanism proposed here utilizes elastic buckling of a thin wire and does not require any external power supply for memorizing the index. The mechanisms to detect peak strain, peak displacement, peak acceleration and cumulative deformation as examples of damage indexes are presented. Furthermore, passive and active wireless data retrieval mechanisms using electromagnetic induction are proposed. The passive wireless system is achieved by forming a closed LC circuit to oscillate at its natural frequency. The active wireless sensor can transmit the data much further than the passive system at the sacrifice of slightly complicated electric circuit for the sensor. For wireless data retrieval, no wire is needed for the sensor to supply electrical power. For the active system, electrical power is supplied to the sensor by radio waves emitted from the retrieval system. Thus, external power supply is only needed for the retrieval system when the retrieval becomes necessary. Theoretical and experimental studies to show excellent performance of the proposed sensor are presented. Finally, a prototype damage index sensor installed into a 7 storey base-isolated building is explained.

  • Esthetic appeal of a product is often affected by the appearance quality of seams forming between components of the product. The appearance quality of seams is, however, assessed in a very subjective and qualitative manner that heavily depends on the evaluator. This paper presents a preliminary study to quantify such assessment by formulating a quantitative index which is a linear function of the seam gap sizes, seam gap ranges, and the size uniformity of seam gaps. By considering a highly simplified problem of a drawer system and utilizing subjective assessments by twenty evaluators, the index has been formulated. The validity of this index has been confirmed by observing its behavior with changes of the component tolerances. Also, the utility of this index has been demonstrated through a selective assembly scheme applied to the drawer system problem. Though the index formulated in this study for seam appearance quality may be useful, future studies are necessary to make the model readily applicable to real problems.

  • In automotive engineering, the brand sound is one of the important advantage strategies in a car company. For the design of brand sound, the selection of descriptive word for a car sound is one of major works in automotive sound quality research. In this paper, booming and rumbling sound, which are professional words used by sound and vibration engineers are used for the design of brand sound. We employed sound quality metrics, which are used in the psychoacoustics. By most research results, the relationship between subjective evaluations and sound quality metrics has nonlinear characteristics. In order to correlate these subjective evaluations with sound quality metrics, the artificial neural network technology has been applied to two-dimensional sound quality index for a passenger car. These indexes are used for 46 passenger cars, which are samples of the famous cars around the world. Also a preference evaluation for car sound was carried out by sound and vibration engineers. We coupled this preference with booming and rumbling sounds by using artificial neural network. In future, the two dimensional sound and preference index will be very useful to develop brand sound in passenger cars.

  • Many blasting engineers develope their own approach to define how to blast different rockmass properties. The problem is that most of these approaches haven't been formalized in any systematic manner and they depend mainly on casual observation of local conditions by an experienced blaster. In this paper blastability index developed by Lilly is adopted to induce powder factor for blast design considering local conditions. With this approach blastability scheme can be considered joint properties as well as rockmass represented local conditions. This approach is also expected to supplement the shortcomings of existing blast design approaches.
