Popular culture has symbolic meaning and has been constructed through different mass media. Newspapers played a significant role in 1950s and 1960s public culture. In particular, editorial cartoons in newspapers expressed social aspects of the age implicitly through satire and criticism. This study examines delivered culture by reflecting the past social aspects and inquiring on clothing featured in the editorial cartoon "Gobau". As for a research method, literature research was conducted on clothing of the age with a review of "Gobau". As for a research range, examination was done based on the complete works of Gobau composed of 5 volumes published as a first edition by Hankookmunhwasa on November, 1973. Early "Gobau" cartoons from 1951-1963 were published in 5 volumes; therefore, research was conducted for the era from 1950s to the early 1960s. Clothing expressed in "Gobau" were reviewed, classified into formative characteristics and internal meaning. Internal meaning was examined by dividing into the expression of social aspects and criticism of society. The research findings are as follows. First, clothing in "Gobau" reflected characteristic in direct manner. There was a coexistence of Hanbok and western-styled, clear distinction between men's trousers and women's skirt. Besides, various kinds of women's western-styled dress appeared in the 1960s. Second, they showed the dress culture that reflected past social aspects. Many aspects were included to reconstruct old and worn clothes due to scarce resources after the Korean War, and cherishing clothes, buying fabric directly to making clothes, making clothes from dressmaking shop, and restrictions on imported goods and luxury items. Third, the study also examined the social norms for fashion. It contained negative perspectives on women wearing pants, short skirts, and new hair styles (like perms) from western culture as well as lipstick.
The purpose of this study is to investigate communication efficacy of advertisement text through audience responses. This study approached qualitatively to KT&G TV commercials. The research proceeded as follows: First, as background theory, studies on audience focusing advertisement criticism and the interpretation of advertising texts were reviewed. Secondly, the characteristics of the audiences of the advertisements, analyzed through in-depth individual interviews as well as group interviews, were incorporated into a broad theme and then divided into different dimensions. Finally, the audiences' decoding code and critic reponses in reading ambiguous advertising texts, and the interrelationship between strategic ambiguity were discussed under a unified model. The major findings of this study are as follows: In interpreting the ambiguous advertising texts, the audiences use various decoding codes such as language, visuals, technology and rhetoric, and various critic responses such as linguistic, macroscopic, schematic, non-verbal and socio-cultural factors, in quite comprehensive manner. Also, it was shown that audiences make use of different decoding strategies in terms of their recognition, reliability, emotional attitude, and behavior. It can therefore be concluded that the strategic ambiguity has its limit in explaining its effectiveness in the entire dimensions of recognition, emotional attitude, and behavior, in the sense that the strategic ambiguity is most effective in recognition while it invokes more negativity in the behavioral dimension. Finally, this empirical study, focusing on qualitative analyses, may have its limit as well; however, deeper statistic-qualitative studies in the future could compensate for it.

The purpose of this study is to explore the issues and implications for landscape design education in Korean landscape architecture by analyzing the National Exhibition of Korean Landscape Architecture(NEKLA). This study analyzed the suggested topics and selected site as well as the commentary that appeared in the NEKLA's award-winning book published from 2004 to 2014. Results of the study are as follows: First, topics of NEKLA are not only competition guidelines but related to exploring new area and role of Korean landscape architecture. Second, most dealing with site is 'industrial heritage and regeneration space' and 'green infrastructure'. In more recent years, a larger variety of sites were addressed. Third, site locations are concentrated in metropolitan areas, and awards and participation of the non-metropolitan universities was very low. Fourth, seven criteria can be applied in a general landscape design competition such as 'newness of the concept(idea)', 'logicality of the design process', 'selection of site fidelity of analysis(interpretation)', 'presentation and completion of the master plan', 'consistency with the theme', 'linkage of concepts and results' and 'feasibility'. The evaluation criteria are increasing the sophistication of the design language to provide useful suggestions on how to find design education methods. Its implications are as follows: First, training is essential to derive innovative ideas, but it should avoid excessive concept-oriented education. Second, design education may include instruction on how to define the problems related with the site. Third, more emphasis on design logic is essential to transform the innovative concept to actual results. Fourth, 'slick images' unrelated to design should be suppressed. Fifth, practice is needed to solve the topics addressed in the design process of education. Sixth, 'feasibility' and 'creative thinking' are necessary to recognize a reciprocal relationship that is helpful to one another. This study uses direct quote commentary to minimize the subjectivity of the researcher and to trace issues of the contemporary landscape architecture more directly and vividly. This study is a record waiting for another review as meta-criticism. In this regard this study, the landscape architect of the next times will have a mean that historical records to review the current thinking of the landscape theory and design.

The purpose of this study is to suggest the interior architecture design studio through the pedagogical method of educational technology for college students who lack self-directed learning. The pedagogical method has been organized to make a student-centered class based on the operation of existing architectural design studios. This teaching and learning method emphasizes the role of teachers as facilitators to help students lacking in self-directed learning in the design process, the BIM visualization to give students an expression of design project and the critics to give students an experience of working circumstances. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, This pedagogical model can improve the self-directed learning of students, accomplish the design process well through teamwork, and provide problem based learning (PBL) to settle obstacles that come up during the project. Second, through this model, students can improve their field design capacity by instructor, design feedback and criticism. Finally, This model can suggest new pedagogical methods for interior architectural design studios and management of student-centered studios.
The purpose of this study is to examine the concept of surrealism and its expression technique and to develop creative and artistic women's coat design based on the analysis of various expression techniques of surrealistic artists and designers. To this end, literature review was done and design and actual works of women's coats were made. Surrealism was applied to fashion by Schiaparelli in the 1930s and it has constantly been applied by many fashion designers. The examples used in fashion were examined by shape of body parts or natural objects, metaphor and transformation of objects, position change and optical illusion. Based on this examination, motifs were drawn from paintings of Rene Magritte, Salvador Dali, Vladimir Kush, and Rafal Olbinski, who most inspired contemporary fashion designers with their works. The creative and artistic sense of five women's coats for 20's and 30's were designed using surrealistic paintings and fashion design expression techniques in a view of social problems. This study has a significance in that it expanded the expression techniques of fashion design and its field with original design which is inspired by surrealistic formativeness and expression technique with social criticism. It is also possible for this study to contribute to the development of fashion design if various designs are presented through grafting various artistic expression techniques onto fashion.
This study is purposed to explicate the idea of 'the general design' for the construction of the construction of space of $L\'{a}szl\'{o}$ Moholy-Nagy who has stood against the traditional value system and made an attempt to create a new space-form language. On the basis of unification of perception and reality Moholy-Nagy intended to regenerate the essential aspects of life through an art by bestowing art with an aesthetic foundation and also expanding the art world into the living area. 'The Allgemeine Elementenlehre(the general theory of elements)' of Moholy-Nagy that is distanced from the visual perception as the dominant sense which is based on the principle of representation and imitation, and emphasized on the complicated relationship between the various senses including the tactile sense, offers a pedagogical basis for the space design that is indispensable for the plastic thinking and practice. At the same time it indicates an access route to the primary nature through the spatial construction of the prime elements of nature and man To explicate his idea toward the general theory of design of space, it will be tried first of all to clarify the core points of the empirio-criticism and the constructivism as the theoretical backgrounds of Moholy-Nagy. And then on the basis of these theoretical backgrounds will be analyzed the system and the contents of 'the allgemeine Elementenlehre' as the general space design theory and also the general space design pedagogy.
This study was to figure out the design characteristics of court housing type for the purpose of searching for the possibility of applying it to the housing design in Korea. In spite of changes of housing design condition in Korea, especially steep increase in density, there have been changes only in the height of housing block, not in the housing types, layout, spatial organization and other design properties. Due to such a situation, housing in Korea has been criticised as too high, monotonous one - especially types of housing block tend to be fixed into a slab block and a point block. As one of the alternatives to respond to the criticism, this study focused on the positive aspects of the court housing type, and suggested the design direction throughout the analysis of 8 entries in the design competition of EunPyeong New Town, which attempted to overcome the negative problems - mainly the daylighting, orientation, and privacy - and tried to maximize the positive properties of this type of housing.
This paper examines the Dutch policy for architecture and spatial design within the framework of the theory of creative industries. Creative industries are a young concept that emerged in the mid 1980's as a form of commercial cultural production associated with consumerism. The definition of the cultural industry is rather ambiguous in terms of its scope and its relation to the traditional field of art and cultural heritage. The paper describes the theory of the creative industry and relates the Dutch policy for architecture and spatial design to the creative industries theory. The sector of architecture and spatial design in the Netherlands has since the early 1990's been systematically supported by a national policy. Within this period a sophisticated infrastructure of institutions and funding incentives has created a successful and active culture of architecture, spatial design, architectural curating, architecture criticism, education, talent development, and research. Critical success factors for the Dutch policy are the separation of the cultural policy for architecture and spatial design from the art and cultural heritage sector, the 'depth' of the Dutch policy extending into fields not directly related to architecture and spatial design as well as the pro active role of the public sector assigning a central role to the architect and involving him in the beginning of the process.
A rational and logical sense of design often found in modernism(including minimalism) sometime deal with the criticism that such characteristics which derived from those of modernism, lack emotion31 qualities(arises from human feelings). It consequently took them to adopt traditional designs in the past, creating such conditions that constantly escapes from‘present’ one and back to the‘new’. This mode develops a trend in current interior design which decorative elements such as art work: traditional arts, folk crafts, flowers and green are much evident. Thus, using many decorative elements of the past(what was once banned since modernism), brings up the interesting point of view that needs to be discussed a new decorative trend if today's interior design. It will approach by comparing significances of past decorative expressions with present through which investigation, will show a better understanding of recent characteristics in interior designing, a.k.a, a current trend since minimalism, embracing important qualities of culture, ecology and people - against today's less-inspired, standardizing spaces.
The purpose of this study is to classify the epistemological critique between philosophy and architecture. Although there are various interpretations and criticism about the architecture, the fundamental critique of architecture is difficult. It is necessary to approach by the philosophic paradigm rather than architectural one. Therefore the procedure and method of study is to define the epistemology within philosophy and architecture, and present the classification viewpoint and the architecture case. The conclusions of this study based on purpose and process are as follows : The First, the philosophic epistemology is to mean the unity of subjective and objective. And the epistemological viewpoint of architectural philosophy is to define the construction's universality. The second, the architectural philosophy is a kind of the philosophy of art, and It is associated with the basis of aesthetics. Thus, the category of architectural philosophy like the aesthetics is classified with function directivity and form directivity, content directivity. The Last, epistemological critiques between philosophy and architecture are as follows ; 1) subject-object-integrated recognition critique (function directivity), 2) object-oriented recognition critique (form directivity), 3) subject-oriented recognition critique (content directivity).
