  • Recently, much attention is imposed on the design of the fuel assemblies in the Pressurized Light Water Reactor (PWR). Spacer grid is one of the main structural components in a fuel assembly. It supports fuel rods, guides cooling water, and maintains a coolable geometry from the external impact loads. In this research, a new shape of the spacer grid is designed by the axiomatic approach. The Independence axiom is utilized for the design. For conceptual design, functional requirements (FRs) are defined and corresponding design parameters (DPs) are found to satisfy FRs in sequence. Overall configuration and shapes are determined in this process. Detail design is carried out based on the result of the axiomatic design. For the detail design, the system performances are evaluated by using linear and nonlinear finite element analysis. The dimensions are determined by optimization. Some commercial codes are utilized for the analysis and design.

  • Performance and efficiency of deep seabed collector is a primary factor for feasibility of commercial deep ocean mining. The efficiency of manganese nodules collector depends on vehicle mobility relative to undulating seafloor and is attributed pickup head to keep altitude and elevation of it against seafloor. For this reason, motion control of pickup head relative to the changing deep-sea topography and other disturbances is of particular importance in design of pickup device. The concept of design axiom is applied to a pickup device of hybrid type in order to evaluate the concept design. Kinematic analysis conducted in absolute Cartesian coordinates gives position, velocity, and acceleration of the hydraulic cylinders which enable the pickup head to keep the preset optimal distance from seafloor. Inverse dynamic analysis provides the driving forces of hydraulic cylinders and the reaction forces at each joint. Design sensitivity analysis is performed in order to investigate the effects of possible design variables on the change of the maximum strokes of hydraulic cylinders. The direct differentiation method is used to obtain the design sensitivity coefficients.

  • Performance and efficiency of hybrid (hydraulic-mechanical) pick-up device of deep sea manganese nodules collector are very sensitive to altitude and altitude of pick-up head relative to undulating seafloor. • The monitor product is packed by cushioning materials because the monitor can be broken during transportation. However, the addition of the cushioning material increased the volume of the product. Therefore, it is required that the usage of cushioning material be minimized. In practice, design engineers have followed the ad hoc design with experiences of predecessors. Automation of the design process is very important for the reduction of engineering cost, and can be achieved by an excellent design process and software development. According to Axiomatic design, a design flow is defined and a software system is developed for automated design. At first, a basic model is defined. A user can modify the model from menus and design is carried out according to the input from the user. Finite element models are automatically generated based on the design. A nonlinear finite element analysis program called LS/DYNA3D is linked for the impact analysis. The process of Design of Experiments using orthogonal array is installed to minimize the maximum acceleration in drop test. Therefore, a new design can be proposed by the system. The program is designed according to the Independence Axiom of Axiomatic design. FRs and DPs of the software system are defined and decomposed by zigzagging process. Independent modules can be generated by analysis of the full design matrix and each module is coded as class in Object Oriented Programming (OOP). Design results are discussed.

  • In this paper the independence axiom, one of two principal axioms of axiomatic design theory, is applied to the leveling system development as an design criteria. After functional requirements and corresponding design parameters constitute an initial design matrix for the leveling system, sequence, which is compatible with the independence axiom, of the design parameters of the design matrix is determined and independent components of block leveling system are revealed. As a result of axiomatic design, system configuration related to the design sequence is developed. In order to verify and validate the developed block leveling system, test with real hull block leveling work in site by using total station which is used to acquire three dimensional coordinate of target point is performed. Comparison with measured data and output data from the block leveling system shows the system accuracy is under 1 mm so that the developed system is verified and validated to be used in site.

  • This study investigates the ontology-based public participation GIS(PPGIS). The major reason that ontology-based GIS has attracted attention in semantic communication in recent year is due to the wide availability of geographical variable and the imminent need for turning such recommendation into useful geographical knowledge. Therefore, this study has been focused on designing and implementing the pilot tested system for public participation GIS. The applicability of the pilot tested was validated through a simulation experiment for history tourism in Guri city Gyeongi-do, Focused on the methodology, the life cycle model which involves regional statues and user recognition, can be viewed as an important preprocessing step(specification, conceptualization, formalization, integration and implementation) for recommended geographical knowledge discovery by axiom. Focusing on practicality, ontology in this study would be recommended for geographical knowledge through reasoning. In addition, ontology-based public participation GIS would show integration epistemological and ontological approach, and be utilized as an index which is connected with semantic communication. The results of the pilot system was applied to the study area, which was a part of scenario. The model was carried out using axiom of logical constraint in the meaning of human-activity.

  • Axiomatic Design has been developed as a general design framework during past two decades and TRIZ has been developed for a design tool over 50 years. Axiomatic design is quite excellent in that the design should be decoupled. When a design matrix is established, the characteristics of the design are identified concerning the coupling properties. If the design is coupled, a decoupling process should be found. However, axiomatic design does not specifically indicate how to decouple. In this paper, a design method is developed to use TRIZ in the decoupling process. The decoupling ideas are extracted from the substance field analysis and various methods in TRIZ. The mettled is applied applied to the conceptual design of a beam splitter for the laser marker and the results are analyzed.

  • A No Spin Differential (NSD) design has been improved from evaluation of two NSD models utilizing the axiomatic approach. New design parameters of the second level are developed to satisfy the independence axiom. The design matrices are determined to decouple the relationship between design parameters and process parameters. The values of process parameters are then determined to optimize and improve the NSD design. Consequently a unique and evolutionary NSD design is achieved with the aid of the axiomatic approach.

  • Two No Spin Differential(NSD) models were benchmarked for a project of Dual-Use Technology. The Axiomatic approach is utilized to evaluate the designs of the models. The Independence Axiom is satisfied at the top level of design but not at the second level, which implies the design exhibits coupling and will admit design improvements. The detailed process of design evaluation is described. It is shown that it is possible to develop a unique and evolutionary NSD design by solving the problems that cause coupling within two models.
