  • In this study, a design strategy is proposed to restore the distorted urban water cycle to the natural water cycle through the LID facility. This is accomplished by determining the optimal LID facility design capacity through which flow duration curves remain the same before and after urban development. A part of the Noksan National Industrial Complex in Busan was selected as the study area and EPA SWMM was constructed to simulate long-term stormwater for various land use scenarios and LID facility design capacity. In the case that the study area was assumed to be a forest area or an agricultural area before urban development, it was found that it was necessary to allocate 7.3% or 5.5% of the impervious area to the area of the bio-retention in order for the flow duration curve to remain the same as before urban development. As a result of the sensitivity analysis of the bio-retention design capacity according to regional rainfall characteristics, the design capacity of 3.8~5.5% of impervious area is needed for the development of agriculture area. Therefore, it can be seen that the optimum capacity can be significantly different according to regional rainfall characteristics. On the other hand, as a result of analyzing the sensitivity of the design capacity according to the variation of the depth of each layer constituting the bio-retention and the size of contributing catchment area, the sensitivity of the optimal design capacity with respect to the design specifications of the bio-retention and the size of contributing catchment area was not significant.

  • This landscape design proposal was presented to a design competition for the New Government Buildings of Dalseong-gun which was held by the municipal authority of Dalseong-gun in June, 2002. The site is located at 1313 Gumpo-ri, Nongong-eup, Dalseong-gun, Daegu Metropolitan City and has an area of 50,000$m^2$. The judging criteria for the landscape design set by the Dalseong-gun could be articulated as follows : an environmentally friendly design which respects the surrounding n a locale which functions as a community center of Dalseong-gun, a resting place for the welfare of its employees and visitors, and finally a place with diverse landscape elements reflecting the individual identity of each facility. The main design concepts of this project could be summarized as follows : an environmentally friendly design which respects and utilizes the existing natural landscape resources, a design which features a harmony of nature with architecture and exterior space with interior space, and a design which balances esthetic form and practical function. This design consists of four major outdoor spaces ; the lawn, the entry plaza, a pine grove, and a deck area on the third floor. The multi-purpose lawn area near the main entrance area can be used for flea markets, outdoor weddings, and picnics for its neighbors. The adjacent plaza and parking lots can be unified as one space in case of large events. The entry plaza has three axes. Each of them represents the Assembly, the Administration, and the Culture. A big circle in the paving pattern unifies the three individual axes. A group of Zelkova trees was introduced to reflect local flavor. The existing pine grove was preserved as a symbolic 'park' for the Gumpo district. The outdoor amphitheatre within the grove was introduced by utilizing the existing topography, The flow of 'nature'on the deck area was designed to connect Mt. Gumkae with the 'city'. It is a comfortable resting place for its employees and visitors.

  • The first step of performance-based design for transmission lines is the determination of wind fields as well as wind loads, which are largely depending on local wind climate and the surrounding terrain. Wind fields in a mountainous area are very different with that in a flat terrain. This paper firstly investigated both mean and fluctuating wind characteristics of a typical mountainous wind field by wind tunnel tests and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The speedup effects of mean wind and specific turbulence properties, i.e., turbulence intensity, power spectral density (PSD) and coherence function, are highlighted. Then a hybrid simulation framework for generating three dimensional (3D) wind velocity field in the mountainous area was proposed by combining the CFD and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method given the properties of the target turbulence field. Finally, a practical 220 kV transmission line was employed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed wind field generation framework and its role in the performance-based design. It was found that the terrain-induce turbulence effects dominate the performance-based structural design of transmission lines running through the mountainous area.

  • Brackets for an automatic transmission are usually used to connect the transmission with adjacent components in a vehicle. Fillet areas of brackets are one of the most important areas to design the brackets because the areas are easily fractured when the brackets are subjected to external loads. In this study, a new design around the fillet area of the bracket is suggested and improved effects of the proposed design are proved through the comparison of safety factors with the current design. The safety factors are calculated through the fatigue analysis via a commercial code, FEMFAT.

  • Currently in Korea, Researches on universal design have been actively accomplished in various fields as not only housing and public space, but also product design and education. The purpose of this study is to analyze previous researches on universal design and to identify its research trends which might suggest the future directions of the related studies. In this study, researches on universal design were analyzed to classify the types according to research area, objects and respondents. Two hundreds twenty one papers(journal articles, theses, dissertations, etc.) which were published in Korea from 1997 to 2008 were analyzed. The results were as follows. Researches on universal design have increased quantitatively and research topics have been diverse. In the 1990s, with the introduction of universal design concept, research area focused on space design, but since 2000 researches on universal design have been expanded to apply the fashion, product design and education. In terms of research objects, the studies about evaluation and case analysis have conducted more than those about principles and planning design. With regard to research respondent, the studies for the elderly or people with disabilities and those of all people including a specific target have conducted in a similar ratio. Previous studies were contributed to expand the topics of universal design and it is time to study the applications based on previous research results for utilization and dissemination of universal design. Also it is necessary to conduct interdisciplinary studies in the field of universal design.
