Evaluation on Bearing Resistance of Transverse Members in Steel Strip Reinforcement using Pullout Tests and Theoretical Equations (인발시험과 이론식을 이용한 강재스트립 보강재에 설치된 지지부재의 지지저항 특성 평가)

  • In this study, the pullout tests are conducted to evaluate pullout resistance of steel strip reinforcement with transverse members. The test results are compared with theoretical equations and then the failure mechanism of transverse members is evaluated. The bearing resistance stress(${\sigma}^{\prime}_b$) of transverse members, which is applied pullout force at 50mm displacement, is closed from punching shear failure to general shear failure. The behavior by increment of a number of transverse members became closer to general shear failure. The behavior of transverse members at maximum pullout force, which is closed to general shear failure, is indicated that it is unrelated to normal stress and a number of transverse members. However, if the allowable displacement of reinforced soil wall is considered, it is impossible to apply in design. The test results are compared with bearing resistance evaluations using Prandtl's plastic theory and cylindrical cavity expansion theory. The analysis results are indicated that the bearing resistance by pullout tests is closed to predicted result by Prandtl's plastic theory, which are located between general shear failure and punching shear failure.

New Development of Hybrid Concrete Support Structure with Driven Piles for Offshore Wind Turbines (하이브리드 해상풍력 파일 기초 콘크리트 지지구조(MCF) 개발)

  • This paper proposes a new hybrid support structure by the driven piles which removes disadvantages of the existing type of support structure for offshore wind turbines. The hybrid type of support structure is combined with concrete cone and steel shaft, and is supported not only by gravity type foundations but also by driven piles. For three dimensional analysis of the huge and thick concrete structure, a solid-shell element that is capable of exact modeling and node interpolations of stresses is developed. By applying wave theory of stream function and solid-shell element in XSEA simulation software for fixed offshore wind turbines, a quasi-static analysis and natural frequency analysis of proposed support structure are performed with the environmental condition on Southwest Coast in Korea. In the result, lateral displacement is not exceed allowable displacement and a superiority of dynamic behavior of new hybrid support structure is validated by natural frequency analysis. Consequently, the hybrid support structure presented in this study has a structural stability enough to be applied on real-site condition in Korea. The optimized structures based on the preliminary design concept resulted in an efficient structure, which reasonably reduces fabrication costs.

A Study on Establishment of Buffer Zone of Radioactive Waste Repository (방사성패기물 처분시설에서의 완충공간 설정에 대한 고찰)

  • A new proposed repository has a final capacity of 800,000 drums radioactive waste. Most of foreign repositories have a general practice of segregating control zones which mainly contributes to classification of degree of control, whether it is called buffer zone or not. Domestic regulatory requirements of establishment of buffer zone in a repository are not much different from those of nuclear power plants for operation period, in which satisfactory design objective or performance objective is the most important factor in determination of the buffer zone. The meaning of buffer zone after closure is a minimum requested area which can prevent inadvertant intruders from leading to non-allowable exposure during institutional control period. Safety assessment with drinking well scenario giving rise to the highest probability of exposure among the intruder's actions can verify fulfillment of the buffer zone which is determined by operational safety of the repository. At present. for the repository to be constructed in a few years, the same procedure and concept as described in this paper are applied that can satisfy regulatory requirements and radiological safety as well. However, the capacity of the repository will be stepwise extended upto 800,000 drums, consequently its layout will be varied too. Timely considerations will be necessary for current boundary of the buffer zone which has been established on the basis of 100,000 drums disposal.

Safety evaluation of type B transport container for tritium storage vessel (B형 삼중수소 운반용기 안정성 평가)

  • A transport container for a 500 kCi tritium storage vessel was developed, which could be used for the transport of metal tritide from Wolsong TRF facility to a disposal site. The structural, thermal, shielding, and confinement analyses were performed for the container in a view of Type B. As a result of structural analysis, the developed container sustained its integrity under normal and accidental conditions. The maximum temperature increase of the inner storage vessel by radiation was evaluated at $134.8^{\circ}C at room temperature. In $800^{\circ}C$ fire test, The thermal barrier of container sustained the inner vessel at $405^{\circ}C after 30 min, which temperature was allowable for the container integrity since maximum design temperature of inner vessel was $550^{\circ}C. In the evaluation of the shielding, the activity of radiation was nearly zero on the outer surface of inner vessel. Consequently the transport container for a 500 kCi tritium was evaluated to pass all the safety tests including accidental condition, so it was concluded that the designed transport container is proper to be used.

A Study on Stability and Economic feasibility according to Height on the MSE Wall with Pacing Panel (고속도로 도로부에 시공된 패널식 보강토 옹벽의 높이별 안전율과 경제성 검토)

  • In this study, the stability and economic feasibility of a MSE (Mechanically stability earth) wall with a pre-cast concrete pacing panel was investigated for a standard section of highway. Based on the design criteria, the MSE walls of the panel type were designed considering the load conditions of the highway, such as the dead load of the concrete pavement, traffic load, and impact load of the barrier. The length of the ribbed metal strip was arranged at 0.9H according to the height of the MSE walls. Because the length of the reinforcement was set to 0.9H according to the height of the MSE wall, the external stability governed by the shape of the reinforced soil was not affected by the height increase. The factor of safety (FOS) for the bearing capacity was decreased drastically due to the increase in self-weight according to the height of the MSE wall. As a result of examining the internal stability according to the cohesive gravity method, the FOS of pullout was increased and the FOS of fracture was decreased. As the height of the MSEW wall increases, the horizontal earth pressure acting as an active force and the vertical earth pressure acting as a resistance force are increased together, so that the FOS of the pullout is increased. Because the long-term allowable tensile force of the ribbed metal strip is constant, the FOS of the fracture is decreased by only an increase in the horizontal earth pressure according to the height. The panel type MSE wall was more economical than the block type at all heights. Compared to the concrete retaining wall, it has excellent economic efficiency at a height of 5.0 m or more.

Power Reduction of Multi-Carrier Transmission System by Using Multi-Dimensional Constellation Mappings (효율적 다차원 성상도를 이용한 다중 반송파 전송 시스템의 전력 감소법)

  • The design rule of digital communication systems is the reliable data transmission with high spectral efficiency and minimum allowable power. This paper suggests the method that saves the average power by implementing a multi-dimensional constellation in case of multi-carrier communication system. By using multi-dimensional constellations we can relocate constellation points in the form of a sphere. If we simply convert the two-dimensional QAM modulation into multi-dimensional QAM, constellation points of 2 N dimensional cube form are made up. Relocating outermost constellation points of 2 N dimensional cube form into low energy constellation points, the constellation of the 2 N-dimensional sphere form is made up which decreases power consumption. In this paper, the multi-dimensional constellations of 2 N-dimensional sphere form are designed from 16-QAM to 2,048-QAM, and power reductions are obtained by comparing constellations of 2-dimensional QAMs and multi-dimensional constellations of 2 N-dimensional sphere form. The result shows that the average power consumption of higher dimensional constellations increases, because the more a dimension elevates, the more the relocatable constellation points increase. But, the increment of the average power savings decreases as the a dimension elevates. The transmission of the data by using multi-dimensional constellations of the sphere form is effective to save the average power consumption with little hardware complexity.

A Study of Governing Factors on the Engineering Behaviour of a Single Pile in Consolidating Ground (압밀이 진행중인 지반에 설치된 말뚝의 공학적 거동을 지배하는 주요인자들에 대한 연구)

  • In the present work, a number of advanced three-dimensional (3D) parametric finite element numerical analyses have been conducted to study the behaviour of a single pile in consolidating ground from coupled consolidation analyses. A single pile with typical minimum and maximum ranges of fill height and clay stiffness has been modelled. The computed results demonstrate that the higher the height of the fill above the clay surface and the smaller the stiffness of the clay, the higher the dragloads and the negative skin friction-induced pile settlements. It has been found that the development of dragloads and pile settlement is more governed by the stiffness of the clay rather than the height of the fill. Positive shaft resistance is mobilised only after the average degree of consolidation is larger than 50%. Although the pile is installed when the degree of consolidation is 50% or more, relatively large negative skin friction can nevertheless develop on the pile. On the other hand, when a load is applied on the pile experiencing an increase in the negative skin friction with time during consolidation, the pile undergoes a large increase in the final settlement of up to 95% compared to that of a pile without axial load on the pile head. The allowable pile capacity when there is negative skin friction on the pile is reduced by about 4-11% compared to a pile without negative skin friction.

Photovoltaic Application in System Formwork Operations of High-rise Building Construction (초고층 시스템거푸집 공사의 태양광에너지 활용 방안 연구)

  • Recently, eco-friendly energy has been employed in diverse fields of industry in order to reduce environmental pollution and secure a new growth engine. In particular, practical applications of photovoltaic energy, such as building integrated photovoltaic systems, have been implemented to the construction industry based on the extensive interest in photovoltaic power as an unlimited and sustainable energy. While the construction of a high-rise building requires large amounts of energy, methods of reducing energy consumption in the construction phase have rarely been studied. Based on this motivation, the research proposes a photovoltaic based formwork system (PVFS), and then performs a design and feasibility analysis for its application to the construction of a high-rise building. Using a case study, the research implements various analyses, including area, position, and total allowable weight required by PVFS, and evaluates the influences of PVFS on the construction processes, as well as its economic feasibility. The proposed PVFS can be adopted to a real-world project in the near future, depending on the advancement of technology and economic feasibility. The results of this research will contribute to establishing a construction environment that promotes a reduction of energy consumption by using eco-friendly energy in the construction phase.

Electrical Insulation Properties of Nanocomposites with SiO2 and MgO Filler

  • In this paper, we attempt to improve the electrical characteristics of epoxy resin at high temperature (above $80^{\circ}C$) by adding magnesium oxide (MgO), which has high thermal conductivity. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the dispersion of specimens with added MgO reveals that they are evenly dispersed without concentration. The dielectric breakdown characteristics of $SiO_2$ and MgO nanocomposites are tested by measurements at different temperatures to investigate the filler's effect on the dielectric breakdown characteristics. The dielectric breakdown strength of specimens with added $SiO_2$ decreases slowly below $80^{\circ}C$ (low temperature) but decreases rapidly above $80^{\circ}C$ (high temperature). However, the gradient of the dielectric breakdown strength of specimens with added MgO is slow at both low and high temperatures. The dielectric breakdown strength of specimens with 0.4 wt% $SiO_2$ is the best among the specimens with added $SiO_2$, and that of specimens with 3.0 wt% and 5.0 wt% MgO is the best among those with added MgO. Moreover, the dielectric strength of specimens with 3.0 wt% MgO at high temperatures is approximately 53.3% higher than that of specimens with added $SiO_2$ at $100^{\circ}C$, and that of specimens with 5.0 wt% of MgO is approximately 59.34% higher under the same conditions. The dielectric strength of MgO is believed to be superior to that of $SiO_2$ owing to enhanced thermal radiation because the thermal conductivity rate of MgO (approximately 42 $W/m{\cdot}K$) is approximately 32 times higher than that of $SiO_2$ (approximately 1.3 $W/m{\cdot}K$). We also confirmed that the allowable breakdown strength of specimens with added MgO at $100^{\circ}C$ is within the error range when the breakdown probability of all specimens is 40%. A breakdown probability of up to 40% represents a stable dielectric strength in machinery and apparatus design.

A Numerical Study for the Atrium Smoke Control by Fire Shutter and Evacuation (방화셔터를 이용한 아트리움 제연과 피난안전에 관한 수치해석 연구)

  • Four fire scenarios, as the cases of fire sizes of 2 MW and 5 MW, and no installation and activation of atrium fire shutter for dormitory building of Daegu 'D college', were developed and fire simulations were run using FDS (ver. 5.5.0) and Pathfinder 2009 programs. By assessing fire and evacuation, the effects of atrium fire shutter and vents on the smoke control of atrium were evaluated and this study also analyzed fire hazard and egress safety for occupants in the dormitory. Fire shutter's preventing smoke transport around atrium was much effective, but smoke layer descended down the design limit of smoke height and kept about 2 m height from the atrium floor in all cases because flow rate through vents was not enough. For the case of 5 MW fire and no fire shutter, fire hazard was higher due to visibility than temperature and allowable egress time to stairwell was short less than 5 seconds for the occupants on the floors of 4F to 7F. For total occupants, egress time out of main doorway was calculated about 136 seconds. It is sure that additional systems improving the performance of smoke control need to be installed for more safe evacuation.
