Depth compression method for 3D video (3차원 영상을 위한 깊이 영상 압축 방법)

  • Recently, a need to encode a depth image has been raising with the deployment of 3D video services. The 3DV/FTV group in the MPEG has standardized the compression method of depth map image. Because conventional depth map coding methods are independently encoded without referencing the color image, coding performance of conventional algorithms is poor. In this letter, we proposed a novel method which rearranged modes of depth blocks according to modes of corresponding color blocks by using a correlation between color and depth images. In experimental results, the proposed method achieves bits reduction of 2.2% compared with coding method based on JSVM.

Design of Interleaver using the MAP Algorithm Scheme in the Multi-User CDMA Communication System (다중 사용자 CDMA 통신 시스템에서 MAP 알고리즘 기법을 사용한 인터리버 설계)

  • In the recent digital communication systems, the performance of Turbo Code using the error correction coding depends on the interleaver influencing the free distance determination and the recursive decoding algorithms that is executed in the turbo decoder. However, performance depends on the interleaver depth that needs many delays over the reception process. Moreover, turbo code has been known as the robust coding methods with the confidence over the fading channel. International Telecommunication Union(ITU) has recently adopted it as the standardization of the channel coding over the third generation mobile communications(IMT-2000). Therefore, in this paper, we proposed the interleaver that has the better performance than existing block interleaver, and modified turbo decoder that has the parallel concatenated structure using MAP algorithm. In the real-time voice and video service over third generation mobile communications, the performance of the proposed two methods was analyzed and compared with the existing methods by computer simulation in terms of reduced decoding delay using the variable decoding method over AWGN and fading channels for CDMA environments.

  • In 3D video transmission, a depth map being used for depth image based rendering (DIBR) is generally compressed by reducing resolution for coding efficiency. Errors in resolution reduction are recovered by an appropriate up-sampling method after decoding. However, most previous works only focus on up-sampling techniques to reduce errors. In this paper, we propose a novel down-sampling technique of depth map that applies different down-sampling rates on moving objects and background in order to enhance human perceptual quality. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme provides both higher visual quality and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR). Also, our method is compatible with other up-sampling techniques.

  • This paper presents a depth boundary sharpening method for improved view synthesis in 3D video. In depth coding, distortion occurs around object boundaries, degrading the quality of synthesized images. In order to encounter this problem, the proposed method estimates an edge map for each frame to filter only the boundary regions. In particular, a window-based filter is employed to choose the most reliable pixel as the replacement considering three factors: frequency, similarity and closeness. The proposed method was implemented as post-processing of the deblocking filter in JMVC 8.3.Compared to the conventional methods, the proposed method generated 0.49 dB PSNR increase and 16.58% bitrate decrease on average. The improved portions were subjectively confirmed as well.

  • This Paper introduces representation and coding schemes of multiview texture and depth data for complex three-dimensional scenes. We represent input color and depth images using compressed texture and depth map pairs. The proposed X-codec encodes them further to increase compression ratio in a near-lossless way. Our system resolves two problems. First, rendering time and output visual quality depend on input image resolutions rather than scene complexity since a depth image-based rendering techniques is used. Second, the random access problem of conventional image-based rendering could be effectively solved using our image block-based compression schemes. From experimental results, the proposed approach is useful to graphics applications because it provides multiview rendering, selective decoding, and scene manipulation functionalities.

  • 본 논문에서는 비트평면 부호화를 이용한 적응적 깊이정보 맵 부호화에서 블록 단위 비트율 조절 방법을 제안한다. 기존 방법에서는 깊이정보 맵에 대한 비트율 조절을 위해 양자화 변수를 이용하여 분리된 비트평면의 이진 영상들 중 특정 비트평면의 이진 영상만 부호화하는 방법을 통해 비트율을 조절할 수 있었다. 본 논문에서는 비트율-왜곡 최적화 방법을 이용하여 블록 단위로 부호화할 비트평면의 이진영상을 결정하는 방법을 제안한다. 실험 결과 제안하는 방법이 기존 방법보다 BD-PSNR이 0.2 dB 향상되었고 BD-rate가 2.97% 감소되어 제안하는 방법의 우수함을 확인할 수 있었다.

Dense RGB-D Map-Based Human Tracking and Activity Recognition using Skin Joints Features and Self-Organizing Map

  • This paper addresses the issues of 3D human activity detection, tracking and recognition from RGB-D video sequences using a feature structured framework. During human tracking and activity recognition, initially, dense depth images are captured using depth camera. In order to track human silhouettes, we considered spatial/temporal continuity, constraints of human motion information and compute centroids of each activity based on chain coding mechanism and centroids point extraction. In body skin joints features, we estimate human body skin color to identify human body parts (i.e., head, hands, and feet) likely to extract joint points information. These joints points are further processed as feature extraction process including distance position features and centroid distance features. Lastly, self-organized maps are used to recognize different activities. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is reliable and efficient in recognizing human poses at different realistic scenes. The proposed system should be applicable to different consumer application systems such as healthcare system, video surveillance system and indoor monitoring systems which track and recognize different activities of multiple users.
