  • This paper presents the effects of depth map quantization for multiview intermediate image generation using depth image-based rendering (DIBR). DIBR synthesizes multiple virtual views of a 3D scene from a 2D image and its associated depth map. However, it needs precise depth information in order to generate reliable and accurate intermediate view images for use in multiview 3D display systems. Previous work has extensively studied the pre-processing of the depth map, but little is known about depth map quantization. In this paper, we conduct an experiment to estimate the depth map quantization that affords acceptable image quality to generate DIBR-based multiview intermediate images. The experiment uses computer-generated 3D scenes, in which the multiview images captured directly from the scene are compared to the multiview intermediate images constructed by DIBR with a number of quantized depth maps. The results showed that there was no significant effect on depth map quantization from 16-bit to 7-bit (and more specifically 96-scale) on DIBR. Hence, a depth map above 7-bit is needed to maintain sufficient image quality for a DIBR-based multiview 3D system.

  • DIBR (Depth Image Based Rendering) is a multimedia technology that generates the virtual multi-view images using a color image and a depth image, and it is used for creating glasses-less 3-dimensional display contents. This research describes the effect of depth accuracy about the objective quality of DIBR-based multi-view images. It first evaluated the minimum depth quantization bit that enables the minimum distortion so that people cannot recognize the quality degradation. It then presented the comparative analysis of non-uniform domain-division quantization versus regular linear quantization to find out how effectively express the accuracy of the depth information in same quantization levels according to scene properties.

  • This research proposed the domain division depth map quantization for multiview intermediate image generation using Depth Image-Based Rendering (DIBR). This technique used per-pixel depth quantization according to the percentage of depth bits assigned in domains of depth range. A comparative experiment was conducted to investigate the potential benefits of the proposed method against the linear depth quantization on DIBR multiview intermediate image generation. The experiment evaluated three quantization methods with computer-generated 3D scenes, which consisted of various scene complexities and backgrounds, under varying the depth resolution. The results showed that the proposed domain division depth quantization method outperformed the linear method on the 7- bit or lower depth map, especially in the scene with the large object.

  • Recently there are many works conducted on utilizing the DIBR (Depth-Image-Based Rendering) based intermediate images for the three-dimensional displays that do not require the use of stereoscopic glasses. However the prior works have used expensive depth cameras to obtain high-resolution depth images since DIBR-based intermediate image generation method requires the accuracy for depth information. In this study, we have developed the simulation to generate multi-view intermediate images based on the depth and color images using Microsoft Kinect. This simulation aims to support the acquisition of multi-view intermediate images utilizing the low-resolution depth and color image from Kinect, and provides the integrated service for the quality evaluation of the intermediate images. This paper describes the architecture and the system implementation of this simulation program.

  • A depth image-based rendering (DIBR) technique is one of the rendering processes of virtual views with a color image and the corresponding depth map. The most important issue of DIBR is that the virtual view has no information at newly exposed areas, so called dis-occlusion. In this paper, we propose an intermediate view generation algorithm using the Kinect depth camera that utilizes the infrared structured light. After we capture a color image and its corresponding depth map, we pre-process the depth map. The pre-processed depth map is warped to the virtual viewpoint and filtered by median filtering to reduce the truncation error. Then, the color image is back-projected to the virtual viewpoint using the warped depth map. In order to fill out the remaining holes caused by dis-occlusion, we perform a background-based image in-painting operation. Finally, we obtain the synthesized image without any dis-occlusion. From experimental results, we have shown that the proposed algorithm generated very natural images in real-time.

  • This paper presents the delta image composition methods using Depth-Image-Based Rendering (DIBR) for 3D stereoscopic broadcasting for the low bandwidth mobile DMB broadcasting system. With DIBR, a left and depth images are transmitted to a mobile device, which restores the right view, whose quality may be poor. This paper describes delta image composition methods for the restoration while minimizing the amount of the transmitted data.

  • Existing method of creating Stereoscopy image, creates viewpoint image from the left and right by shooting one object with 2 lens in certain distance. However, in case of 3-D TV using Stereoscopy camera, the necessity to transmit 2 viewpoint images from the left and right simultaneously, increases the amount of bandwidth. Various and more effective alternatives are under discussion. Among the alternatives, DIBR(Depth Image Based Rendering) creates viewpoint images from the left and right using one image and its Depth information, thus decreasing the amount of transmitted bandwidth. For this reason, there have been various studies on Algorithm to create DIBR Image in existing Static Scene. In this paper, I would like to suggest Gaussian Hole-filling solution, which utilizes reverse-depth image to fill the hole naturally, while minimizing distortion of background. In addition, we have analyzed the effectiveness of each Algorithm by comparing and calculating its functions.

  • A depth adjustment method for visual fatigue reduction for depth-image-based rendering (DIBR) system is proposed. One important aspect of the method is that no calibration parameters are needed for adjustment. By analyzing 3D image warping, the perceived depth is expressed as a function of three adjustable parameters: virtual view number, scale factor and depth value of zero parallax setting (ZPS) plane. Adjusting these three parameters according to the proposed parameter modification algorithm when performing 3D image warping can effectively change the perceived depth of stereo pairs generated in DIBR system. As the depth adjustment is performed in simple 3D image warping equations, the proposed method is facilitative for hardware implementation. Experimental results show that the proposed depth adjustment method provides an improvement in visual comfort of stereo pairs as well as generating comfortable stereoscopic images with different perceived depths that people desire.

  • Stereoscopic image generated by depth image-based rendering(DIBR) for surveillance robot and camera is appropriate in a low bandwidth network. The image is very important data for the decision-making of a commander and thus its integrity has to be guaranteed. One of the methods used to detect manipulation is to check if the stereoscopic image is taken from the original camera. Sensor pattern noise(SPN) used widely for camera identification cannot be directly applied to a stereoscopic image due to the stereo warping in DIBR. To solve this problem, we find out a shifted object in the stereoscopic image and relocate the object to its orignal location in the center image. Then the similarity between SPNs extracted from the stereoscopic image and the original camera is measured only for the object area. Thus we can determine the source of the camera that was used.
