Multi-view images, which are widely used for providing free-viewpoint services, can enhance the quality of synthetic views when the number of views increases. However, there needs an efficient representation method because of the tremendous amount of data. In this paper, we propose a method for generating point cloud data for the efficient representation of multi-view color and depth images. The proposed method conducts sequential reconstruction of point clouds at each viewpoint as a method of deleting duplicate data. A 3D point of a point cloud is projected to a frame to be reconstructed, and the color and depth of the 3D point is compared with the pixel where it is projected. When the 3D point and the pixel are similar enough, then the pixel is not used for generating a 3D point. In this way, we can reduce the number of reconstructed 3D points. Experimental results show that the propose method generates a point cloud which can generate multi-view images while minimizing the number of 3D points.

In a case of mushroom (Lentinus Edodes L.) , visual features are crucial for grading and the quantitative evaluation of the growth state. The extracted quantitative visual features can be used as a performance index for the drying process control or used for the automatic sorting and grading task. First, primary external features of the front and back sides of mushroom were analyzed. And computer vision based algorithm were developed for the extraction and measurement of those features. An automatic thresholding algorithm , which is the combined type of the window extension and maximum depth finding was developed. Freeman's chain coding was modified by gradually expanding the mask size from 3X3 to 9X9 to preserve the boundary connectivity. According to the side of mushroom determined from the automatic recognition algorithm size thickness, overall shape, and skin texture such as pattern, color (lightness) ,membrane state, and crack were quantified and measured. A portion of t e stalk was also identified and automatically removed , while reconstructing a new boundary using the Overhauser curve formulation . Algorithms applied and developed were coded using MS_C language Ver, 6.0, PC VISION Plus library functions, and VGA graphic function as a menu driven way.
This paper proposes a novel active stereo matching technique using white auxiliary stripe pattern. The conventional active stereo matching techniques that uses two cameras and an active source such as projector can accurately estimate disparity information even in the areas with low texture compared to the passive ones. However, it is difficult that the conventional active stereo matching techniques using color code patterns acquire these patterns robustly if the object is composed of various colors or is exposed to complex lighting condition. To overcome this problem, the proposed method uses an additional white auxiliary stripe pattern to get and localize the color code patterns robustly. This paper proposes a process based on adaptive thresholding and thinning to obtain the auxiliary pattern accurately. Experimental results show that the proposed method more precisely measures the stepped sample whose depth is known in advance than the conventional method.

Human activity recognition (HAR) has become effective as a computer vision tool for video surveillance systems. In this paper, a novel biometric system that can detect human activities in 3D space is proposed. In order to implement HAR, joint angles obtained using an RGB-depth sensor are used as features. Because HAR is operated in the time domain, angle information is stored using the sliding kernel method. Haar-wavelet transform (HWT) is applied to preserve the information of the features before reducing the data dimension. Dimension reduction using an averaging algorithm is also applied to decrease the computational cost, which provides faster performance while maintaining high accuracy. Before the classification, a proposed thresholding method with inverse HWT is conducted to extract the final feature set. Finally, the K-nearest neighbor (k-NN) algorithm is used to recognize the activity with respect to the given data. The method compares favorably with the results using other machine learning algorithms.

Stereo vision approach to solve the problem using a single camera three dimension precise distance measurement and object recognition method is proposed. Precise three dimensional information of objects can be obtained using single camera, a laser light and a rotating flat mirror. With a simple thresholding operation on the depth information, the segmentations of objects can be obtained. Comparing the signatures of object boundaries with database, objects can be recognized. Improving the simulation results for the object recognition by precise distance measurement are presented.
The paper presents a sonar based map building method. The environment is a room or area inside a building, which is composed of four types of geometric primitives(corners, edges, cylinders, and walls). We also assume the environment can be modeled into two dimensional map in terms of planes(walls), points(corner and edge), and circle(cylinder). In a real world where most of the object surfaces are specular ones, a sonar sensor suffers from a multipath effect which results in a wrong interpretation of the location of an object. To reduce the effect and uncertainty, the method employs a simple thresholding technique for extracting circular arc features called regions of constant depth(RCD) from scanning sonar data. The usefulness of the approach is illustrated with the results produced by sets of experiments.

This paper presents a semantic object extraction method using user's stroke input, color, and depth information. It is supposed that a semantically meaningful object is surrounded with a few strokes from a user, and has similar depths all over the object. In the proposed method, deciding the region of interest (ROI) is based on the stroke input, and the semantically meaningful object is extracted by using color and depth information. Specifically, the proposed method consists of two steps. The first step is over-segmentation inside the ROI using color and depth information. The second step is semantically meaningful object extraction where over-segmented regions are classified into the object region and the background region according to the depth of each region. In the over-segmentation step, we propose a new marker extraction method where there are two propositions, i.e. an adaptive thresholding scheme to maximize the number of the segmented regions and an adaptive weighting scheme for color and depth components in computation of the morphological gradients that is required in the marker extraction. In the semantically meaningful object extraction, we classify over-segmented regions into the object region and the background region in order of the boundary regions to the inner regions, the average depth of each region being compared to the average depth of all regions classified into the object region. In experimental results, we demonstrate that the proposed method yields reasonable object extraction results.
In this paper, we propose a method that constructs a saliency map in which important regions are accurately specified and the colors of the regions are less influenced by the similar surrounding colors. Our method utilizes LBP(Local Binary Pattern) histogram information to compare and analyze texture information of surrounding regions in order to reduce the effect of color information. We extract the saliency of stereoscopic images by integrating a 2D saliency map with depth information of stereoscopic images. We then measure the distance between two different sizes of the LBP histograms that are generated from pixels. The distance we measure is texture difference between the surrounding regions. We then assign a saliency value according to the distance in LBP histogram. To evaluate our experimental results, we measure the F-measure compared to ground-truth by thresholding a saliency map at 0.8. The average F-Measure is 0.65 and our experimental results show improved performance in comparison with existing other saliency map extraction methods.

One of the ways to measure the distance in the computer vision is to use the focus and defocus. There are two methods in this way. The first method is caculating the distance from the focused images in a point (MMDFP: the method measuring the distance to the focal plane). The second method is to measure the distance from the difference of the camera parameters, in other words, the apertures of the focal planes, of two images with having the different parameters (MMDCI: the method to measure the distance by comparing two images). The problem of the existing methods in MMDFP is to decide the thresholding vaue on detecting the most optimally focused object in the defocused image. In this case, it could be solved by comparing only the error energy in 3x3 window between two images. In MMDCI, the difficulty is the influence of the deflection effect. Therefor, to minimize its influence, we utilize two differently focused images instead of different aperture images in this paper. At the first, the amount of defocusing between two images is measured through the introduction of regularization and then the distance from the camera to the objects is caculated by the new equation measuring the distance. In the results of simulation, we see the fact to be able to measure the distance from two differently defocused images, and for our approach to be robuster than the method using the different aperture in the noisy image.
Aiming at infrared thermal images with different buried depth defects, we study a variety of image segmentation algorithms based on the threshold to develop global search ability and the ability to find the defect area accurately. Firstly, the iterative thresholding method, the maximum entropy method, the minimum error method, the Ostu method and the minimum skewness method are applied to image segmentation of the same infrared thermal image. The study shows that the maximum entropy method and the minimum error method have strong global search capability and can simultaneously extract defects at different depths. However none of these five methods can accurately calculate the defect area at different depths. In order to solve this problem, we put forward a strategy of "divide and conquer". The infrared thermal image is divided into several local thermal maps, with each map containing only one defect, and the defect area is calculated after local image processing of the different buried defects one by one. The results show that, under the "divide and conquer" strategy, the iterative threshold method and the Ostu method have the advantage of high precision and can accurately extract the area of different defects at different depths, with an error of less than 5%.
