  • It is well known that sound waves in the sea propagates under the influence of sea surface and bottom roughness, the sound speed profile, the water depth, and the density of sea floor sediment. In particular, an abrupt change of sound speed with depth can greatly affect sound propagation through an eddy. Eddies are frequently generated in the East Sea near the Korean Peninsula. A warm eddy with diameter of about 150 km is often observed, and the sound speed profile is greatly changed within about 400 m of water depth at the center by the eddy around the Ulleung Basin in the East Sea. The characteristics of low-frequency sound propagation across a warm eddy are investigated by a sound propagation model in order to understand the influence of warm eddies. The acoustic rays and propagation losses are calculated by a range-dependent acoustic model in conditions where the eddy is both present and absent. We found that low-frequency sound propagation is affected by the warm eddy, and that the phenomena dominate the upper ocean within 800 m of water depth. The propagation losses of a 100 Hz frequency are variable within ${\pm}15$ dB with depth and range by the warm eddy. Such variations are more pronounced at the deep source near the sound channel axis than the shallow source. Furthermore, low-frequency sound propagation from the eddy center to the eddy edge is more affected by the warm eddy than sound propagation from the eddy edge to the eddy center.

  • 3D image must have depth image for depth information in order for 3D realistic media broadcasting. We used generally belief propagation algorithm to solve probability model. Belief propagation algorithm is operated by message passing between nodes corresponding to each pixel. The high resolution image will be able to precisely represent but that required much computational complexity for 3D representation. We proposed fast stereo matching algorithm using belief propagation with multi-resolution based wavelet or lifting. This method can be shown efficiently computational time at much iterations for accurate disparity map.

  • In the present paper we propose a new method of intermediate view reconstruction between stereo images using belief propagation_based stereo matching. Intermediate view reconstruction is an important step for multiview 3D display. Many previous paper about intermediate view reconstruction using depth information to synthesize interview though stereo matching were proposed. But depth information is different to estimated accurately. In the present paper, in order to obtain accurate depth information, belief propagation_based stereo matching was used.

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the crack propagation depth through a slab and crack width movement in continuously reinforced concrete slab systems (CRCSs). METHODS : The crack width movements in continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) and continuously reinforced concrete railway track (CRCT) were measured in the field for different crack spacings. In addition, the crack width movements in both CRCP and CRCT were simulated using finite element models of CRCP and CRCT. The crack width movements, depending on the unit temperature change, were obtained from both the field tests and numerical analysis models. RESULTS : The experimental analysis results show that the magnitudes of the crack width movements in CRCSs were related to not only the crack spacing, but also the crack propagation depth. In CRCP, the magnitudes of the crack width movements were more closely related to the crack propagation depths. In CRCT, the crack width movements were similar for different cracks since most were through cracks. If the numerical analysis was performed to predict the crack width movements by assuming that the crack propagates completely through the slab depth, the predicted crack width movements were similar to the actual ones in CRCT, but those may be overestimated in CRCP. CONCLUSIONS : The magnitudes of the crack width movements in CRCSs were mainly affected by the crack propagation depths through the slabs.

  • The characteristics of bottom sediment may be able to vary within a few meters of depth in shallow water. Since bottom attenuation coefficient as well as sound velocity in the bottom layer is determined by the composition and characteristics of sediment itself, it is reasonable to assume that the bottom attenuation coefficient is accordingly variable with depth. In this study, we use a parabolic equation scheme to examine the effects of depth-varying compressional wave attenuation on acoustic wave propagation in the low frequency ranging from 100 to 805 Hz. The sea floor under consideration is sandy bottom where the water and the sediment depths are 40 meters and 10 meters, respectively. Depending on the assumption that attenuation coefficient is constant or depth-varying, the propagation loss difference is as large as 10dB within 15 km. The predicted propagation loss is very much comparable to the measured one when we employ a depth-varying attenuation coefficient.

  • The propagation of a truncated Airy beam with spatial phase modulation (SPM) is investigated in Kerr nonlinearity with an optical lattice. Before the truncated Airy beam enters the optical lattice, a sinusoidal phase is introduced on the wave-front of the beam. The effect of the spatial phase modulation and optical lattice on propagation behavior is analyzed by direct numerical simulation. It is found that the propagation direction of a truncated Airy beam can be effectively controlled by adjusting the values of phase shift. The effects of optical amplitude, truncation factor, spatial modulation frequency, lattice period and lattice depth on the propagation are discussed in detail. By choosing a high modulation depth, the finite-energy Airy beam can be deflected with a large deflection angle in an optical lattice.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate features of transverse crack occurrence and propagation in continuously reinforced concrete pavement(CRCP) when subjected to environmental loading. The finite element model of CRCP was developed and the element removal method was implemented to predict the crack propagation process. To investigate the effect of the type of environmental loading on the CRCP behavior and cracking aspects, the following three different cases were considered: (1) the temperature gradient between top and bottom of the slab does not vary and the constant temperature drop throughout the depth occurs; (2) the temperature at the slab bottom does not vary and the temperature gradient increases; and (3) the temperature between the mid-depth and the bottom of the slab is the same and does not vary and the temperature at the top decreases. The analysis results showed that the crack occurrence and propagation through the depth of the slab in CRCP were significantly affected by the type of environmental loading. The changes in stress distribution and displacements during the crack occurrence and propagation process could also be investigated.

  • Three dimensional linear transient wave propagation over a constant depth is presented using Green's function method. Present solution is proved to be a more general solution from which the existing solutions are obtained by using the appropriate assumptions. The effect of dispersion on wave height attenuation is shown and discussed on the numerical results of the solution.

  • This paper dealt with the propagation characteristics of acoustic signal in insulation oil for the purpose of improving the reliability of AE (acoustic emission) method used for condition monitoring of oil-immersed transformers. A discharge source was placed in insulation oil and AE sensors ($f_c$ :140 kHz) were attached on the oil tank to study the changes of velocity and propagation path with the depth and distance. The average velocity was 1,436 m/s and the velocity decreased with the increase of depth from the oil surface to 430 mm. The propagation paths were classified into three sections by the shortest reflection path of the detected signal. The minimum distinguishable distance in each section was 70 mm. It was also verified that PD (partial discharge) with a magnitude over than 500 pC can be detected by the AE sensors.

  • When we generate 3D video that provides immersive and realistic feeling to users, depth information of the scene is essential. Since the resolution of the depth map captured by a depth sensor is lower than of the color image, we need to upsample the low-resolution depth map for high-resolution 3D video generation. In this paper, we propose a depth upsampling method using depth-discontinuity information. Using the high-resolution color image and the low-resolution depth map, we detect depth-discontinuity regions. Then, we define an energy function for the depth map upsampling and optimize it using the belief propagation method. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms other depth upsampling methods in terms of the bad pixel rate.
