Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the levels of anxiety, depression, physical symptoms, and supportive care needs in patients with hematologic malignancy and to identify predictive factors of supportive care needs. Methods: The data were collected from 100 subjects undergoing treatments during 2010 in Korea. The questionnaires included the Hospital Anxiety-Depression Scale, the M. D. Anderson Symptom Inventory, and the Supportive Care Needs Survey-Short Form 34. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: Forty percent of the subjects had anxiety and 58% had depression. Thirty-eight percent of the subjects reported to have moderate-to-severe levels of physical symptoms. The most severe physical symptom was lack of appetite, followed by fatigue and pain. In terms of supportive care needs, the health system and information domain showed the highest among all domains. Supportive care needs had a significant positive correlation with anxiety, depression, and physical symptoms. And its predictive factors were identified as anxiety, physical symptoms and marital status, with the explanatory power of 48.9%. Conclusion: These findings demonstrate that anxiety and physical symptoms should be assessed and treated to meet the supportive care needs of patients with hematologic malignancies.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the quality of life and related factors of CVA surgery patients. Method: The subjects were 64 CVA surgery patients who had discharged and received follow up care at the OPD. Data were collected using William's SS-QOL instrument and IADL. And Data were analyzed with SPSS WIN program in which frequency, percentage, t-test, Pearson's correlation and stepwise regression were used to examine the quality of life and related factors. Result: General characteristics related to QOL were marital status and economical status. Depression was the most important factor with influence on QOL in CVA disease patients after surgery. There were further positive correlation between patient's IADL and QOL and between patient's social support and QOL. Meanwhile the patient's depression level was negatively correlated with QOL. Conclusion: Depression was the most important factor with influence on QOL in CVA patients after surgery. Therefore active nursing intervention to decrease depression and to improve patient's physical functional status in needed. And the patient's family should be included in all nursing intervention and patient education so that the patient's quality of life is prompted by the maintenance of optimal wellbeing.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the influencing factors on eating disorders in college students. Method: A descriptive correlational study design was used. Eight hundred fifty-nine college students were administered self-report questionnaires to examine eating habits, self-efficacy, depression, and parent-adolescent communication from May to June, 2010. Collected data were analyzed by the SPSS 15.0 program for t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression. Result: The level of an eating disorder in participants was moderate and it differed by gender, major, and type of living. The eating disorder showed a significant correlation with self-efficacy (r=-.28, p=<.000), depression (r=.23, p=.001), and parents-adolescent communication (r=-.13, p=.008). Self-efficacy (8.2%) and depression (2.1%) were significant predictors to explain the eating disorder. Conclusion: This study provides comprehensive understanding of the influencing factors on eating disorders in college students. It suggests that nursing interventions to improve self-efficacy and decrease depression for management of eating disorder are needed.
Purpose: This study was to investigate the prevalence of depressive symptoms and risk factors in elderly people (old vs oldest-old) with arthritis. Methods: The Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) was used with a sample of 1,084 elderly people with arthritis aged 65 or above. Results: We found that the prevalence of depressive symptom was greater for oldest-old people (66.7%) compared to old people (56%). Significant differences between old people and oldest-old people were found for education, living with spouse, number of generation, regular exercise, body mass index (BMI), ADL limitation, self-rated health, and depression. Significant differences existed between depression and non-depression in terms of all variables except region and BMI among old people. But, among the oldest people, ADL limitation and self-rated health showed differences. The Logistic regression analysis revealed that religion, medical comorbidity, ADL limitation, self-rated health were significantly associated with depressive symptoms in old people. But, in oldest-old people, none of the variables were associated with depressive symptoms. Conclusion: The findings show that there are age differences in depression and related factors in elderly people with arthritis. Longitudinal studies, which covered depressive symptom severity and which are controlled for a large number of potential confounders, will need to complement the results of this study in the future.
Purpose: This study is descriptive research aiming to identify factors influencing the stigma experienced by college students with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), focusing on COVID-19 pandemic stress, depression, and fear of negative evaluation as the main variables. Methods: An online survey was administered to 175 college students who had been diagnosed with COVID-19 from January to May 2022 and were enrolled in universities in Seoul, Cheongju, and Daegu, South Korea. The survey collected data on pandemic stress, depression, fear of negative evaluation, and stigma. The data were analyzed using the t-test, ANOVA, the Scheffe test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression in SPSS/WIN 26.0. Results: We analyzed differences in stigma scores based on general characteristics of the college students and found significant differences in stigma scores by age, major satisfaction, interpersonal satisfaction, date of COVID-19 confirmation, treatment modality, and recent subjective health condition. Factors influencing stigmatization were identified as COVID-19 pandemic stress, depression, date of COVID-19 confirmation, treatment modality, recent subjective health condition, and major satisfaction, with an overall explanatory power of 37.6%. Conclusion: This study is significant as it identifies emotional changes across various aspects of pandemic stress, depression, fear of negative evaluation, and stigma among college students who have been diagnosed with COVID-19. The findings of this study suggest the development of programs to reduce psychological distress and enhance mental health management skills among these students.
The Purpose of this study was to identify characteristics of fatigue and the relationship between fatigue and related factors in patients on hemodialysis. This study was a survey study using a cross-sectional design. The subjects for this study were 101 patients on hemodialysis who were registered in the six hemodialysis clinics among a total of eleven clinics in Seoul. The period of data collection was from February 28, 1995 to May 2, 1995. Data were collected through an interview with a structured packet and the physiological data. The tools used in this study were the Visual Analogue Scale-Fatigue developed by Lee et al(1990) and translated by Lee(1991), the fatigue interview schedule developed by this researcher, Zung's self rating depression scale(Zung, 1965), the self-efficacy scale developed by Sherer et al(1982) and the Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire(NSSQ) translated by Oh(1984). The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics(mean, standard deviation, frequency, range), Pearson correlation coefficients and Stepwise multiple regression. The results were as follows ; 1. Characteristics of Fatigue of hemodialysis patients : 1) 79 of 101 hemodialysis patients complained fatigue. 2) The mean fatigue score as measured by the VAS-F was 36.2mm. 3) The mean duration of fatigue was 2.9 hours 2. Characteristics of fatigue related factors : 1) The physiologic factor which included Hgb, Hct, BUN, creatinine, potassium and interdialytic weight gain deviated from normal range. 2) The psychological factor which included depression and self-efficacy was about the same level as for patients with other chronic diseases. 3) The environmental factor which included social support had wide variation. 3. The relationship between fatigue and related factors : 1) Interdialytic weight gain in the physiologica factor was the only valuable with fatigue (p<.05) 2) The relationship between fatigue and the psychological factor of depression showed a positive and strong correlation(p<.05). According to the findings of this study, fatigue was highly correlated with the depression. This indicates that nurses should try to assess and control psychological factors when patients complain of fatigue rather than just considering physiological factors. Nursing has to develop effective nursing interventions to reduce fatigue in patients with chronic diseases using the relationship between fatigue and physiological, psychological and environmental factors.
Postpartum depression is a kind of serious problem which influences on the postpartum woman, her family and infant. It has been known to be caused by many factors and some depression scales have been used to assess the degree of postpartum depression. Edinburgh postnatal depression scale(EPDS) is simple and efficient method. Because of the difficulty of diagnosis and valuation on the postpartum depression, there has been a few case report on oriental medical treatment. I report one postpartum depression case which was valuated by EPDS and had objective evidence. In this case herbal treatment and acupuncture was efficacious on the postpartum depression. I think, though six month has passed from parturition, there need to be treated after parturition weakness and deficiency point of view.
Purpose. This cross-sectional survey research was undertaken to examine the degree of depression in post-menopausal women and to analyze the factors affecting that depression. Method. 325 people from public health center in Inchon were surveyed as the subject of this study. Data collection was conducted through the use of questionnaires. Results. The above half of these sampled people were in depressed state (64.0%) and the mean score of depression was 12.71. There were significant differences in the depression state according to presence of spouse, economic level, exercise, and smoking. A positive correlation was found between depression and climacteric symptoms. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that the most powerful predictor was climacteric symptom. Climacteric symptom, presence of spouse, smoking, and exercise accounted for 45 % of the variance in postmenopausal women's depression. Conclusion. Nurses are able to use these results to plan and implement nursing interventions for decreasing depression and consequent the improved quality of life in Korean postmenopausal women. Also, the nurses have to be more aware of the following groups; solitary women, low-income group and smokers, that they have higher mean score of depression.
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the status of caffeine-containing energy drink consumption among Korean nursing students and to identify associated psychological factors. Methods: In total, 187 Korean nursing students participated in this cross-sectional study. A self-administered questionnaire was used to identify participants' general characteristics and psychosocial factors (self-esteem, academic stress, depression, and college adjustment) associated with energy drink consumption. Data were analyzed with SPSS using descriptive statistics, the $x^2$ test, the t-test, and logistic regression. Results: More than two-thirds (73.3%) of the participants had consumed energy drinks. Among the investigated psychological factors, depression appeared to most strongly influence energy drink consumption behaviors in this population. Conclusion: The consumption of caffeine-containing energy drinks was found to be common among nursing students preparing to become health care professionals; depressed nursing students were more likely to have consumed energy drinks than non-depressed students. Nursing educators should emphasize the early detection of unhealthy beverage consumption habits and provide appropriate education to enhance healthy behaviors in future health care professionals.
This study was done to identify the significant convergence factors of affecting depression of elderly women in rural area. A total of 161 elderly women aged 65 and over were collected and data were analyzed using multiple logistic regression with SPSS/WIN 21.0. The result indicated that 42.9% of participants were depressed. In logistic regression, significant factors of depression were age(p<.001, OR=1.146), economic status (p=.004, OR=.123), number of family member living together (p=.013, OR=.020), number of social activities (p=.012, OR=.436), number of disease diagnosed (p<.001, OR=3.847), visual function (p=.023, OR=3.867), family support (p=.048, OR=.707), which accounted for 68.6% of the variance. The results of this study can contribute to develop various convergence strategies to prevent the prevalence of depression of elderly women in rural area. Further studies are needed to confirm the level of contribution of visual disability to depression in rural older women.
