  • The absorption characteristics of hazardous materials onto human body and defense mechanism differ from each other region within the respiratory tracts, thus adverse health effects of inhaled smokes are associated with not only the concentration but also the location of the particles deposited. In this work, the deposition fraction per surface area and the deposition sites of the smoke particles in human respiratory tracts for each rest and light exercise conditions together with oral and nasal breathing were calculated by using segmental volume tracking method. The results would be used for deriving the amount of absorption of hazardous materials onto human body, thus contribute to the health risk assessments of inhaled fire smokes.

  • Aerosol deposition(AD) coating that enable fabricate films at low temperature have begun to be widely researched for the integration of ceramics as well to realize high-speed deposition rates. For application of ceramic thick film by AD to display and electronic ceramic industry, fabrication of dense structure with a no cracking is required. In this study, to fabricate dense ceramic thick film, the effect of crystal phase of starting powder was investigated. For this study, amorphous and crystalline $SiO_2$ powders were used as starting powders. Two types of $SiO_2$ powders were deposited on glass substrate by AD. In the case of amorphous $SiO_2$ powder, the deposited films had extremely incompact and opaque layer, irrespective of particle size. In contrast to amorphous powder, in the case of crystalline powder, porous structure layer and dense microstructure with no cracking layer were fabricated depending on the particle size. The optimized starting powder size for dense coating layer was $1{\sim}2{\mu}m$. The transmittance of film reached a maximum of 76% at 800 nm.

  • In this paper, we compared the performance of $Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se)_2$ (CIGSSe) thin film solar cell with CdS buffer layer deposited by irradiating 365 nm UV light with 8 W power in Chemcial Bath Deposition (CBD) process. The effects of UV light irradiation on the thin film deposition mechanism during CBD-CdS thin film deposition were investigated through chemical and electro-optical studies. If the UV light is irradiated during the solution process, the hydrolysis of Thiourea is promoted even during the same time, thereby inhibiting the formation of the intermediate products developed in the reaction pathway and decreasing the pH of the solution. As a result, it is suggested that the efficiency of the CdS/CIGSSe solar cell is increased because the ratio of the S element in the CdS thin film increases and the proportion of the O element decreases. This is a very simple and effective approach to control the S/O ratio of the CdS thin film by the CBD process without artificially controlling the process temperature, solution pH or concentration.

  • Owing to advantages of polymeric materials for hydrogen tank liner like light-weight property and high specific strength, polymer based composites have gained much attention. Despite of many benefits, polymeric materials for fuel cell tank cause problems which is critical to applications as low gas barrier property, and poor processability when adding fillers. For these reasons, improving gas barrier property of polymer composites is required to study for expanding application fields. This work presents impermeable polymer nanocomposites by introducing thin barrier coating using layer by layer (LBL) deposition method. Also, bi-layered and quad-layered nanocomposites were fabricated and compared for identifying relationship between deposition step and gas barrier property. Reduction in gas permeability was observed without interrupting mechanical property and processability. It is discussed that proper coating conditions were suggested when different coating materials and deposition steps were applied. We investigated morphology, gas barrier property and mechanical properties of fabricated nanocomposites by FE-SEM, Oxygen permeation analyzer, UTM, respectively. In addition, we revealed the mechanism of barrier performance of LBL coating using materials which have high aspect ratio.

  • Nano-oxide dispersion-strengthened (ODS) superalloys have attracted attention because of their outstanding mechanical reinforcement mechanism. Dispersed oxides increase the material's strength by preventing grain growth and recrystallization, as well as increasing creep resistance. In this research, atomic layer deposition (ALD) was applied to synthesize an ODS alloy. It is useful to coat conformal thin films even on complex matrix shapes, such as nanorods or powders. We coated an Nb-Si-based superalloy with TiO2 thin film by using rotary-reactor type thermal ALD. TiO2 was grown by controlling the deposition recipe, reactor temperature, N2 flow rate, and rotor speed. We could confirm the formation of uniform TiO2 film on the surface of the superalloy. This process was successfully applied to the synthesis of an ODS alloy, which could be a new field of ALD applications.

  • A graphene layer is most important materials in resent year to enhance the electrical properties of semiconductor device due to high mobility, flexibility, strong mechanical resistance and transparency[1,2]. The resistance switching memory with the graphene layer have been reported for next generation nonvolatile memory device[3,4]. Also, the graphene layer is able to improve the electrical properties of memory device because of the high mobility and current density. In this study, the resistance switching memory device with metal-oxide nano-particles embedded in polyimide layer on the graphene mono-layer were fabricated. At first, the graphene layer was deposited $SiO_2$/Si substrate by using chemical vapor deposition. Then, a biphenyl-tetracarboxylic dianhydride-phenylene diamine poly-amic-acid was spin coated on the deposited metal layer on the graphene mono-layer. Then the samples were cured at $400^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in $N_2$ atmosphere after drying at $135^{\circ}C$ for 30 min through rapid thermal annealing. The deposition of aluminum layer with thickness of 200 nm was done by a thermal evaporator. The electrical properties of device were measured at room temperature using an HP4156a precision semiconductor parameter analyzer and an Agilent 81101A pulse generator. We will discuss the switching mechanism of memory device with metal-oxide nano-particles on the graphene mono-layer.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of applying the Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) as a tool to enhance the skin absorption of arbutin, a well-known skin-whitening agent. Arbutin solution or skin formulation was applied on the back of hairless mouse skin in vivo after IPL treatment, and then the skin deposition of arbutin was determined by HPLC. IPL treatment significantly increased the amount of arbutin in the skin after 6 hours when arbutin solution was applied 20 times. IPL also enhanced the skin deposition of arbutin when arbutin formulation was applied, although it was not significantly different. Significant increase of surface skin temperature was observed by IPL treatment, which might be a mechanism of the enhanced skin absorption of arbutin. These results suggest the feasibility of using IPL as a tool to increase the skin absorption of whitening agents, although further research needs to be conducted to understand its exact mechanism.

  • The design and maintenance of navigation channel and water facilities of an harbor which is located at the mouth of river or at the estuary area are difficult due to the complexity of estuarial water and sediment circulation. Effects of deepening navigable waterways, of changing coastline configurations, or of discharging dredged material to the open sea are necessary to be investigated and predicted in terms of water quality and possible physical changes to the coastal environment. A borad analysis of the transport mechanism in the estuary area was made in terms of sediment property, falling velocity, concentration and flow characteristics. In order to simulate the transport processes, a two-dimensional finite element model is developed, which includes erosion, transport and deposition mechanism of suspended sediments. Galerkin’s weighted residual method is used to solve the transient convection-diffusion equation. The fluid domain is subdivided into a series of triangular elements in which a quadratic approximation is made for suspended sediment concentration. Model could deal with a continuous aggregation by stipulating the settling velocity of the flocs in each element. The model provides suspended sediment concentration, bed shear stress, erosion versus deposition rate and bed profile at the given time step.

  • An all-perovskite oxide heterostructure composed of SrSnO3/Nb-doped SrTiO3 was fabricated using the pulsed laser deposition method. In-plane and out-of-plane structural characterization of the fabricated films were analyzed by x-ray diffraction with θ-2θ scans and φ scans. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurement was performed to check the film's composition. The electrical transport characteristic of the heterostructure was determined by applying a pulsed dc bias across the interface. Unusual transport properties of the interface between the SrSnO3 and Nb-doped SrTiO3 were investigated at temperatures from 100 to 300 K. A diodelike rectifying behavior was observed in the temperature-dependent current-voltage (IV) measurements. The forward current showed the typical IV characteristics of p-n junctions or Schottky diodes, and were perfectly fitted using the thermionic emission model. Two regions with different transport mechanism were detected, and the boundary curve was expressed by ln I = -1.28V - 13. Under reverse bias, however, the temperature- dependent IV curves revealed an unusual increase in the reverse-bias current with decreasing temperature, indicating tunneling effects at the interface. The Poole-Frenkel emission was used to explain this electrical transport mechanism under the reverse voltages.

  • Experimental studies of particle (TiO$\_$2/) deposition from the laminar hot gas particle flow (about 1565K) onto the cold wall surface (about 1215K-1530K) were carried out by the 'real time' laser light reflectivity method (LLRM) and the photographs of scanning electron microscope(SEM). The LLRM was used for the measurement of thermophoretic deposition rates of small particles (d$\_$p/<3.mu.m), and the photographs of SEM were used for determining what factors control the collection of particles having diameters ranging from 0.2 to 30 microns. Two phenomena are primarily responsible for transport of the particles across the laminar boundary layers and deposition: (1) particle thermophoresis (i.e. particles migration down a temperature gradient), and (2) particle inertial impaction, the former effect being especially larger factor of the particle deposition in its size over the range of 0.2 to 1 microns. And also, this study indicates that thermophoresis can be important for particles as large as 15 microns. Beyond d$\_$p/=16.mu.m, this effect diminishes and the inertial impaction is taken into account as a dominant mechanism of particle deposition. The results of present experiments found to be in close agreement with existing theories.
