  • The vertical distribution of hydrometeor before precipitation near the cloud base has been analyzed using a scanning lidar, rawinsonde data, and Cloud-Resolving Storm Simulator (CReSS). This study mostly focuses on 13 Desember 2016 only. The typical synoptic pattern of lake-effect snowstorm induced easterly in the Yeongdong region. Clouds generated due to high temperature difference between 850 hPa and sea surface (SST) penentrated in the Yeongdong region along with northerly and northeasterly, which eventually resulted precipitation. The cloud base height before the precipitation changed from 750 m to 1,280 m, which was in agreement with that from ceilometer at Sokcho. However, ceilometer tended to detect the cloud base 50 m ~ 100 m below strong signal of lidar backscattering coefficient. As a result, the depolarization ratio increased vertically while the backscattering coefficient decreased about 1,010 m~1,200 m above the ground. Lidar signal might be interpreted to be attenuated with the penetration depth of the cloud layer with of nonspherical hydrometeor (snow, ice cloud). An increase in backscattering signal and a decrease in depolarization ratio occured in the layer of 800 to 1,010 m, probably being associated with an increase in non-spherical particles. There seemed to be a shallow liquid layer with a low depolarization ratio (<0.1) in the layer of 850~900 m. As the altitude increases in the 680 m~850 m, the backscattering coefficient and depolarization ratio increase at the same time. In this range of height, the maximum value (0.6) is displayed. Such a result can be inferred that the nonspherical hydrometeor are distributed by a low density. At this time, the depolarization ratio and the backscattering coefficient did not increase under observed melting layer of 680 m. The lidar has a disadvantage that it is difficult for its beam to penetrate deep into clouds due to attenuation problem. However it is promising to distinguish hydrometeor morphology by utilizing the depolarization ratio and the backscattering coefficient, since its vertical high resolution (2.5 m) enable us to analyze detailed cloud microphysics. It would contribute to understanding cloud microphysics of cold clouds and snowfall when remote sensings including lidar, radar, and in-situ measurements could be timely utilized altogether.

  • The effects of acute ethanol on the high K+ induced $Ca^{2+}}$ signals were examined from primary cultures of cerebellar granule neurons. $Ca^{2+}}$ signals were measured with Calcium Green-1 based microscopic video imaging. Because $Ca^{2+}}$ signal was low in most of granule neurons without stimuli, high KCI was used for depolarization. In most case, acute exposure to ethanol reduced the peak amplitude of the $Ca^{2+}}$ signals, induced by high K+, even though low concentration of ethanol(2~10mM) was used and the effects lasted more than 30min. In was also possible to see differences of ethanol inhibition, i.e. the temporal pattern of $Ca^{2+}}$ signal reductions and the strength of inhibition of $Ca^{2+}}$ signals in cerebellar granule neurons. These results indicate that low concentration of ethanol has diverse actions on the $Ca^{2+}}$ signals in cerebellar granule neurons.

  • Cirrus clouds observation was conducted using a lidar system in order to measure their height, thickness and optical depth at Kwangju (35$^{\circ}$10'N, 126$^{\circ}$53'), Korea in winter, December 2002, and spring March and April 2003. Cirrus clouds at high altitude can be distinguished from atmospheric aerosols location by high depolarization ratio and high altitude. Cirrus clouds were observed at 5${\sim}$12km altitudes with a high depolarization ratio from 0.2 to 0.5. Optical depth of cirrus clouds had varied from 0.28 to 1.81. Radiative effect of observed cirrus cloud on climate system was estimated to be negative net flux from ?0.24 to ?31.04 W/m$^{2}$.

  • One of the reaction pathways in light-invoked signal transduction can be initiated through ion fluxes across the plasma membrane in higher plants. We isolated protoplasts from oat coleoptile and examined the effects of light on the membrane potential using a membrane potential-sensitive fluorescent probe (bisoxonol). Both red and far-red light initially induced a hyperpolarization in oat cells. Red light-induced hyperpolarization was effectively dissipated by 100 mM $K^+$, but the hyperpolarization induced by far-red light was not depolarized by any of the cations ($K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Li^+$, $Na^+$) tested. The depolarization induced by red light and $K^+$ was inhibited by 200 mM TEA, which is a $K^+$ channel blocker. These results suggest that $K^+$ influx through the inward $K^+$ channel may be a depolarization path in the phytochrome-mediated signal transduction.

  • The polarization properties of $BaTiO_3$ were investigated by using thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) technique. Two peaks were observed at about 400 K (peak A) and 435 K (peak B) from TSDC spectra obtained from the temperature range of 280-500 K. Peak A shows a sharp decrease of TSDC due to extinction of spontaneous polarization above the phase transition temperature of $BaTiO_3$. The values of activation energy of peak A and peak B were calculated to be 0.70 eV and 0.87 eV respectively. From the results of TSDC measurement with a variation of polarizing electric field strength, we found that saturation of total current of TSDC was started from 3kV/cm. However, the amount of total current of TSDC was not affected by the variation of polarizing time.

  • 23 cap beams on the 1 Km length jetty bridge in Shin-da power plant (Taipower co., Taiwan) utilize far-end telecontrol cathodic protection technology which is the first case ever used in Taiwan. The system comprises cathodic protection system and te1econtrol monitoring system. The control and monitoring such as protection current adjustment, protection potential and depolarization measurement of the 23 cap beams can be adjusted through system telecontrol operations. Thereby allows monitoring and control of the 23 anode zones in a convenient and cost effective way. This system is at present still in its best running condition since Sept. 1997 when it was completed. All the 23 cap beams can achieve the 100 mV depolarization potential criteria of protection. It meet the specifications of reinforced concrete cathodic protection standard and proved to be very excellent.

  • The cardiac depolarization model using three dimensional ventricular model is simulated. To study this theme, we constructed a cardiac ventricular model and simulated the cardiac activation process using the action potential duration and the activation time. The cardiac potential model is generated by the logical combination of the elliptic equations. The action potential duration could be obtained from the fact that it is linearly distributed between model cells. The cardiac activation process was simulated by the law of "all-or-none". Based on the activation time and the action potential duration the cardiac potential at the arbitrary time after the activation of the model cell was computed. To test the validity of model, the comparison the results of model simulation with the physiological data was performed.

  • When repolarization of neuronal action potential does not decline monotonically but interrupted by additional depolarization, this prolonged depolarization phase is referred to afterdepolarization(ADP). ADP is considered to playa crucial role in the modulation of neuronal excitability, since it contributes to burst firing. We studied the ionic mechanisms underlying ADP in the soma of dentate granule cells, using rat hippocampal slice (300${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in thickness) prepared from 3- to 3-week-old SD rats.(omitted)

  • Taking into consideration the thermal lensing effects of laser rods, depolarization losses of laser beams induced by the thermal birefringence were calculated. The numerical model proposed for the calculation, which is based on the paraxial ray optics formulation and provides explicit expressions of optical path lengths for various optical elements, was described in detail. Calculated results were compared with those of Jones matrix formulation and experiments. The calculated results are in good agreement with experimental results.
