  • Smart manufacturing is a process of integrating computer-related technologies in production and by doing so, achieving more efficient production management. The recent development of supercomputers has led to the broad utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning techniques useful in predicting specific patterns. Despite the usefulness of AI and machine learning techniques in smart manufacturing processes, there are many fundamental issues with the direct deployment of these technologies related to data management. In this paper, we focus on solving the outlier detection issue in smart manufacturing applications. More specifically, we apply a state-of-the-art outlier detection technique, called Elliptic Envelope, to detect anomalies in simulation-based collected data.

  • The non-explosive holding and release mechanism is used to prevent damage to the mission component caused by explosives when the deployment structure for Cube Satellites is separated. However, among the several types available, the non-explosive holding and release mechanism system using nylon wires depend on the nylon wire knot method and tightening power of the worker. Therefore, in this study, we conducted experiments with the operation of a new holding and release mechanism system by conceptualizing the Boa System Dial, which can provide a constant tightening force regardless of worker proficiency and deploying a imitational solar panel. In this study, the process of binding and unbinding with constant tension was recorded while applying the novel non-explosive holding and release mechanism using the Boa System Dial proposed. In addition, required advances are indicated for the application of the proposed system to actual Cube Satellites.

  • In recent years, use of the web technologies and on-line process has immensely swapped single-user platform practice. This study attempted to develop preliminary cost estimating program by means of Web technologies based on statistical modeling results. A prototype Web-based Preliminary Item-Level Cost Estimating System (WBPILCES) using open source software was developed as an on-line estimating tool in this research. The primary objective is to study the possible flexibility of implementing a centralized information system that will be maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) IT division. The full-scale deployment of proposed information architecture is expected to seamlessly integrate with legacy database system currently used by TxDOT so as to streamline data storage, cost growth tracking and estimates documentation.

  • Rice contains a wealth of genetic diversity, both within Oryza sativa and in related A-genome species. Decades of genetic research into this diversity have identified dozens of major genes contributing to a wide variety of important traits, including disease resistance, abiotic stress tolerance (drought, salinity, submergence, heat, cold etc.), grain quality, flowering date and maturity and plant architecture. Yet despite these opportunities, very few of the major genes and QTLs known have been successfully applied through rice breeding programs to produce sustained changes in farmer's fields. This presentation will briefly examine some of the factors limiting application of major genes in the mainstream breeding programs, and steps that have been taken to alleviate those limitations. As a result of these interventions, dozens of major genes that were previously unavailable to breeders are now being used confidently in the variety development process. Case studies will be discussed of genes critical for blast resistance worldwide, rice yellow mottle virus for Africa, and new validated QTLs for salinity tolerance.

  • The development and testing of inspection equipment is necessary for the safe deployment of advanced nuclear reactors. One proposed advanced reactor design is Westinghouse's lead-cooled fast reactor (LFR). In this paper, the process of achieving adequate wetting for an ultrasonic under-lead viewing system is discussed and results presented. Such a device would be used for inspection in the molten lead core during reactor outages. Wider tests into the wetting of various materials in molten lead at microscale were performed using electron microscopy. The possible mechanisms and kinetics for materials wetting in lead, particularly stainless steel and nickel, are proposed and discussed.

  • The O-RAN Alliance is responsible for defining the technical and testing specifications of open radio access networks, aiming for openness, virtualization, and intelligence in these networks. Recently, the application of Korea Open Testing and Integration Center (OTIC) to this alliance has been approved, enabling the issuance of O-RAN certificates and badges. An OTIC plays a crucial role as a testing facility in performing conformance verification and interoperability tests for O-RAN functions and interfaces. In addition, it enables end-to-end system verification adhering to O-RAN principles and processes. These activities can substantially contribute to enhancing the competitiveness of domestic O-RAN products and activating the corresponding ecosystem. We comprehensively describe the O-RAN certification and badging processes. Additionally, we analyze end-to-end test cases that are essential for the proper deployment and operation of 5G systems including O-RANs.

  • Apart from the customer demands themselves, the weightings of the customer demands are one of the main input data of a QFD (Quality Function Deployment) and furthermore of the actual construction process of products. Up to now, most interviews with stakeholders have been carried out with questionnaires and then absolute weightings have been used. Now it has been analysed if the use of other interview and evaluation techniques, e.g. relative weightings and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), can improve the precision of the demands and wishes of the stakeholders. Now the task was to analyse if the use of relative weightings as input of a QFD is possible at all, how they have to be adapted and if an increase in precision compared to the use of absolute weightings is reached. When using AHP during the product development it has become clear that only up to seven demands can be rated at the same time by customers. That means that a kind of hierarchy has to be developed to correctly transfer the demands and their weightings into the QFD.

  • In this paper, an intake RCV system for low noise turbo engine was developed through optimization process of a geometric path of compressor housing and an open rate of recirculation valve. At first, the critical customer requirement from voice of customer was defined and quality function deployment of an intake RCV system was executed. And then, the renovative concept design using pugh matrix method was selected as final concept for satisfaction of requirement. Simultaneously, system analysis was carried by function diagram and fishbone diagram. Next, control factors and levels for the optimal design were performed. And, the optimal design of an intake RCV system was studied using design of experiment. Conclusively, we achieved not only cancellation tip-out noise at the driving condition but also improvement of NVH commodity through optimization process of an intake RCV system, which is optimal configuration of compressor housing and recirculation valve.

  • Despite the fact that much has been published about Six Sigma in the business and academic press and on the Internet in recent years, there is still confusion among many people, particularly those who work in the transactional and service environments, about the nature of Six Sigma. It is true that Six Sigma like other process improvement programs before was first applied to manufacturing processes; however, many corporations including General Electric and Sony have successfully applied Six Sigma to their transactional and service processes as well. Six Sigma is used by many companies not only to improve the quality of their products and services but also to achieve quantifiable financial results, improve management style and communication, and achieve customer and employee satisfaction. Whether in manufacturing or non-manufacturing environments, the application of Six Sigma differs from organization to organization. Although there are many common elements between these applications, however, special care must be taken when customizing Six Sigma to suit the organizations' needs. In this paper, the author provides some practical and useful guidelines for Six Sigma deployment. This paper is not about the use of numerous statistical tools and techniques that can be found in a typical Six Sigma toolbox. The main emphasis has been placed both on the concept and the implementation of Six Sigma, particularly within the non-manufacturing areas of business.
