The purpose of this study is to explore folding as a tool diversifying structures and shapes or forms, and to consider the role and possibilities as structural design sources. First, the morphological characteristics and the elements for transforming pattern of folding are investigated and the way of forming space is also shown. Secondly, the application methods and systems of folding are descrived.
The bistable thin cylindrical shell is developable structure with the ability to transition between its two stable configurations. This structure offers significant potential applications due to its excellent deformability. In this paper, the composite thin cylindrical shell consisting of the composite layer and the piezoelectric layer was investigated. The material and geometric parameters of the shell were found to influence its stable characteristics. The analysis model of the composite thin cylindrical shell incorporating the piezoelectric layer was developed, and the expressions for its strain energy were derived. By applying the minimum energy principle, the impact of the electric field intensity on the bi-stable behaviors of the cylindrical shell was analyzed. The results showed that the shell exhibited the bistability only under the appropriate electric field strength. And the accuracy of the theoretical prediction was verified by simulation experiments. This study provides an important reference for the application of deployable structures.
The development of a digital signal processor based prototype is described in relation to continuing efforts for realizing a fully self-contained active sensor system utilizing impedance-based structural health monitoring. The impedance method utilizes a piezoelectric material bonded to the structure under observation to act as both an actuator and sensor. By monitoring the electrical impedance of the piezoelectric material, insights into the health of the structured can be inferred. The active sensing system detailed in this paper interrogates a structure utilizing a self-sensing actuator and a low cost impedance method. Here, all the data processing, storage, and analysis is performed at the sensor location. A wireless transmitter is used to communicate the current status of the structure. With this new low cost, field deployable impedance analyzer, reliance on traditional expensive, bulky, and power consuming impedance analyzers is no longer necessary. A complete power analysis of the prototype is performed to determine the validity of power harvesting being utilized for self-containment of the hardware. Experimental validation of the prototype on a representative structure is also performed and compared to traditional methods of damage detection.

The rapidly decreasing natural resources and the global variation of the climate push us to find intelligent and efficient structural systems to provide more people with fewer resources. This paper proposed a kinematic cable-strut system to realize sustainable structures in responding to changing environmental conditions. At first, the concept of the kinematic system based on crystal-cell pyramid (CP) cable-strut unit was given. Then the deployment of the structure was studied experimentally. After that, the static behaviors in the fully deployed state under the symmetric and asymmetric load cases were investigated. Moreover, the effects of thermal loading and the initial prestress distribution were also discussed. Comparative studies between the proposed structure and other deployable cable-strut system under three times of design load cases were carried out. Finally, the robustness of the system was studied by removal of one passive cable at one time.

In this paper, development of tape-springs made of composite materials was conducted for the deployment structures along with design, analysis, fabrication, and numerical and experimental investigation of mechanical behavior of the tape-springs. To this end, the tape-springs were manufactured according to three stacking patterns, and numerical and experimental investigation were conducted to determine whether or not they were damaged during bending with various selected composite materials. Finally, optimal stacking patterns that do not cause damage were selected during bending. With this information, the four-point bending test was conducted to obtain the moment-rotation curves. From results, it was confirmed that the nonlinear hysteresis phenomenon of the tape-springs was properly realized according to folding and unfolding. Therefore, it was confirmed that the composite material tape spring was properly developed.
Pyrotechnic separation devices have been widely used as holding and release mechanism for deployable appendage. However, pyro-shock can cause temporal or permanent damage on shock sensitive components such as electronics, mechanism, and brittle components. This study proposed a low-stiffness blade based passive shock absorber using a multi-layered stiffener laminated with viscoelastic acrylic tapes for reducing transmitted pyro-shock upon explosion of pyrotechnic separation devices. The multi-layered structure with viscoelastic tape has high-damping characteristics to effectively secure structural integrity of low-stiffness blades under the launch environment. The design effectiveness was verified through a shock test by dropping a pendulum. The structural integrity of the shock absorber under a launch environment was evaluated through structural analysis under load conditions with a deployable payload.

COMS(Communication, Oceanography, and Meteorology Satellite) is the first Korean multi-purpose satellite which is planned to be deployed at the altitude of geosynchronous orbit above the Korean peninsular. Noting that COMS is composed of the main BUS structure, two deployable solar panels, one yoke, five reactions wheels, COMS is treated as a collection of 9 bodies and its nonlinear equations of motion are obtained using the multi-body dynamics approach. Also, a computer program is developed to analyze the COMS motion during the various mission phase. Quite often, the equations of motion have to be derived repeatedly to reflect the fact that the spacecraft dynamics change as its configuration, and therefore its degree of freedom varies. However, the equations of motion and simulation software presented in this paper are general enough to represent the COMS dynamics of various configurations with a minimum change in input files. There is no need to derive the equations of motion repeatedly. To show the capability of the simulation program, the spacecraft motion during the solar array partial and full deployment has been simulated and the results are summarized in this paper.

Bi-stable mechanism is a system that has two different stable equilibrium positions within its range of motion. It has an ability to stay in two different positions without external power input and despite small disturbances. One of the most bi-stable applied mechanism is a morphing system, such as deployable structures, switch systems, and robot grippers. However, due to the complexity of mechanism and limitation of structure configuration, it is difficult to apply on a morphing system with rotating link mechanism. In this paper, an implementation method of rotational bi-stable mechanism using cylindrical permanent magnets is proposed. The magnetic field and the magnetic force were calculated from electromagnet model of the cylindrical permanent magnet. Based on the model, the force relation between two links containing the cylindrical permanent magnets was estimated. An array of cylindrical permanent magnets was selected for symmetric bi-stability, and an experiment on the link structure with the proposed bi-stable mechanism was performed to investigate the stability against a external torque.
A Spatial structure, having a curvature with a curved surface, is an extremely efficient mechanical creation considering the external load. It is resisted the out-of-plane direction load by in-plane forces using the structure's curvature. Spatial Structures include many types of structures, such as: space frames or grids; cable-and-strut and tensegrity; air-supported or air-inflated; self-erecting and deployable; cable net; tension membrane; lightweight geodesic domes; folded plates; and thin shells. Membrane structures, a kind of lightweight soft structural system, are used for spatial structures. It is very important that effects by wind load than seismic and dead load. And, wind load is different by surrounding and shape of building In this study, we analyze the results of design wind load and wind tunnel tests about the 2 stadiums which are constructed on sensitive sites by effect of wind loads.
This paper proposes a novel low-profile omni-directional microstrip antenna to mount on the deployable wing of the observation munition. The proposed antenna is designed on seven hexagonal resonators in a quasi-circular array to achieve a monopolar radiation pattern with a thin substrate. By employing the mesh ground structures, the resonant frequencies and impedance bandwidths of the proposed antenna is investigated. To verify the feasibility of the mesh ground structure, the thin ground wire width is investigated theoretically for improving the 3-dB fractional bandwidth, realized antenna gain and quality-factor. The proposed antenna demonstrates a good monopolar radiation in good agreement with the simulation results. The implemented prototype shows the measured bandwidth of 326 MHz with respect to 5.65% centered at 5.77 GHz and realized gain of 5.49 dBi at 5.84 GHz.
