Modal and chemical compositions of clinopyroxnes in spinel peridotites from the Baegryeong Island and the Boeun, enclosed in Miocene alkali basalt, are important for understanding the pre-eruptive temperature condition and chemical processes such as mantle depletion and enrichment. All spinel peridotites show transitional texture between protogranular and porphyroclastic textures. Temperature ranges of spinel peridotites from the Baegryeong Island and the Boeun at 15 kb are 773∼1188℃ and 705∼1106℃, respectively. The spinel peridotites from the Baegryeong Island and the Boeun have undergone the 1∼10% and 1∼4% fractional melting, which were determined by using primitive mantle-normalized Y and Yb of clinopyroxenes. LREE enrichment patterns of clinopyroxene indicate that these rocks from both areas have undergone cryptic mantle metasomatism without new minerals.
A new type of uranium occurrence in Korea was identified in pegmatitic and hydrothermally altered granite in the Daejeon area. The U-bearing parts typically include muscovite, pink-feldspar and sericite as alteration minerals. In this study, the geochemical characteristics and alteration age of the granitic rocks were examined to provide evidence for hydrothermally-enriched uranium. The K-Ar ages of muscovite coexisting with U-bearing minerals were determined as 123 and 128 Ma. The U-bearing rocks have relatively low ($CaO+Na_2O$), high $K_2O$ contents, and high alteration index values by major element geochemistry. The trace element geochemistry shows that the uraniferous rocks have significantly low Th/U ratios and strongly differentiated features. The rare earth element patterns indicate that the uraniferous rocks have a low total REE and LREE contents with depletion of Eu. Considering the geochemical variation of the granitic rock major, trace and rare earth elements, it can be concluded that uranium enrichment in pegmatites and altered granite should be genetically related to post-magmatic hydrothermal alteration of K-metasomatism after emplacement of the two-mica granite. This is the first report for geochemical characteristics of Mesozoic granite-related U-occurrences in South Korea. This study will help further research for uranium deposits with similarities in geological setting, mineralogy and age data between South China and Korea, and can also be expected to help solve the source problems related to high uranium concentrations in some groundwater occurring in the granitic terrane.

$Cr_2AlC$ compounds were synthesized by hot pressing, and oxidized between 900 and $1200^{\circ}C$ in air for up to 50 hours. They oxidized to a thin $Al_2O_3$ layer containing a small amount of $Cr_2O_3$with the liberation of carbon as CO or $CO_2$ gases. The consumption of Al to form the $Al_2O_3$ layer led to the depletion of Al and enrichment of Cr just below the $Al_2O_3$ layer, resulting in the formation of an underlying $Cr_7C_3$ layer. As the oxidation temperature and time increased, the $Cr_7C_3$ oxide layer and the underlying $Cr_7C_3$ layer thickened. The oxidation resistance of $Cr_2AlC$ was generally good due to the formation of the $Al_2O_3$ barrier layer.
Stress corrosion cracks in Alloy 600 compact tension specimens tested at $325^{\circ}C$ in a simulated primary water environment of pressurized water reactor were analyzed by analytical transmission electron microscopy and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS). From a fine-probe chemical analysis, oxygen was found on the grain boundary just ahead of the crack tip, and chromium oxides were precipitated on the crack tip and the grain boundary attacked by the oxygen diffusion, leaving a Cr/Fe depletion (or Ni enrichment) zone. The oxide layer inside the crack was revealed to consist of a double (inner and outer) layer. Chromium oxides existed in the inner layer, with NiO and (Ni,Cr) spinels in the outer layer. From the nano-SIMS analysis, oxygen was detected at the locations of intergranular chromium carbides ahead of the crack tip, which means that oxygen diffused into the grain boundary and oxidized the surfaces of the chromium carbides. The intergranular chromium carbide blunted the crack tip, thereby suppressing the crack propagation.
Geochemical studies on gold-bearing quartz veins and wallrocks from the Okgye mine were carried out in order to investigate the primary dispersion patterns of gold and associated elements and to quantify the dispersion width of elements with distance from the gold-bearing quartz veins. Gold-bearing quartz veins occur in basaltic trachyandesite of unknown age. Enrichment of $k_2O$, MnO, Au, As, Rb, Sb, Pb, Zn, Cu, Ag and Cd, and depletion of $Na_2O$ and Sr are found in altered wallrocks. The ratio of $k_2O(k_2O+Na_2O)$, alteration index for trace elements, and Rb/Sr in altered wallrocks are increased, whereas Sr/CaO ratio is decreased with approach to the gold-bearing quartz veins. The widths of primary dispersion range from 17 cm to 155 cm. The relative dispersion width increases in order Au=Cu=Zn=Ag=Cd$k_2O$=Rb and Ba< $Na_2O$$Na_2O$, As, Sb, Sr, Pb, Au, Cu, Zn, Ag and Cd, and a quadratic function for $k_2O$, MnO, Rb and Ba.
This paper investigated the effects of ionic strength in the medium on a preconcentrator for a protein sample with low concentration. The preconcentration chip was designed and fabricated using a polydimethylsiloxane replica through standard lithophotography. A glass substrate is silanized prior to functionalizing the nanoparticles for self-assembly at a designed region. Due to the overlap of electrical double layers in a nanofluidic channel, a concentration polarization effect can be achieved using an electric field. A nonlinear electrokinetic flow is induced, resulting in the fast accumulation of proteins in front of the induced ionic depletion zone, so called exclusion-enrichment effect. Thus, the protein sample can be driven by electroosmotic flow and accumulated at a specific location. The chip is used to collect fluorescein isothiocyanate-labeled bovine serum albumin (FITC-BSA) diluted in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) buffer solution. Different concentrations of the buffer media were studied herein. Fluorescence intensity images show that the buffer concentration of 4 mM is more appropriate than all the other ones. The sample of FITC-BSA with an initial concentration of $10{\mu}M$ in the 4 mM PBS solution increases its concentration at the desired region by up to 50 times within 30 min, demonstrating the results in this investigation.
Detailed studies of regional geology and geochemistry of the tungsten mineralisation of Ogbang mine were carried out; in particular geochemical trends of major and trace elements of different lithological units, in comparison with those of the Sangdong area, together with igneous plutons in the area. The Ogbang deposit is in a pegmatitic association localised only in amphibolites whilst pegmatites in adjacent schists and gneisses are barren. The tungsten is geochemically accompanied by increase of $K_2O$, $Na_2O$ and Rb, and depletion of Sr. The trend of Rb/Sr ratio to the type of mineralisation, in commonly seen in the mineralised granites of the world, suggests that the tungsten in the Ogbang pegmatites was supplied by hydrothermal processes which at the same time caused Rb enrichment and Sr depletion. These trend could be of use in the search for new ore bodies in common with those of mineralised granitic or pegmatitic host rocks. There is no evidence that the granites in the area have any genetic influence spacially and temporarily on the initial scheelite formation.

Changes in the benthic communities have been studied to investigate the environmental effects before and after the construction of Shihwa Dike in the West coast of Korea. It is suggested that sequential changes in macrofaunal assemblages progressed in two sucressional directions. In the Shihwa lake under the influence of organic enrichment. First, the appearance of 'azoic tone' or 'grossly polluted zone' developed in the area of less than 6 m in depth resulted from the severe dissolved oxygen depletion due to the eutrophication from the increased organic loading. Second, the 'polluted zone' characterized by the proliferation of the opportunistic species in organically enriched area, was found in the vicinity of the industrial discharges and nearby fluvial inputs. This benthic community succession in the Shihwa lake seemed to be caused by the various ecological events such as an eutrophication in this organically enriched environment after construction of the dike and other physico-chemical parameters like salinity and dissolved oxygen in the bottom water, which may be influenced by the irregular surface water discharge and dilution by outer seawater inflow through the water gate of the dike. On the other hand, the benthic communities in the outside of the dike showed that the species richness was more than doubled and the abundance increased almost seven times more than that before the dike construction. This may be a typical characteristics of the initial phase in benthic eutrophication, suggesting that an increased organic input area may have been reponsible for this faunal change in the study area.
The area of the study is located in Ogcheon district, middle part of Ogcheon Fold Belt. The area is covered by metasedimentary rocks of Ogcheon Supergroup at northern, eastern and southern part. Jurassic Ogcheon granite which intruded into Ogcheon Supergroup at central part, was intruded by Cretaceous quartz porphyry at western part. The granite consists of quartz, plagioclase, alkali feldspar, biotite, sphene, apatite, epidote, opaque and so on. It is generally characterized by grey to light grey, medium-grained, mafic enclave and partly weak foliation. In terms of geochmical compositions, the granite is felsic, peraluminous, subalkaline and calc-alkaline, and it was differentiated from single granitic magma. It shows parallel LREE enrichment and HREE depletion patterns with 0.84 Eu negative anomaly, which has REE variation trend and anomaly value similar to Jurassic granites in Korea. From charactristics of petrology, mineralogy and geochmistry, it may be interpreted that the Ogcheon granite body was derived from melting of I-type crustal material related to syn-collisional tectonic setting and emplaced more or less rapidly into the Ogcheon Supergroup.
Tungsten ore deposits in China show clearly their relationship between granitoids and orebodies. All kinds of different tungsten ore deposits, having the largest ore reserves in the world, occur in China. Major tungsten deposits in 1950'years were locally confined in three provinces such as Jiangxi, Hunan and Guangdong. However, the major tungsten ore deposits are replaced by new tungsten deposits such as Sandahozhuang, Xingluokeng, Shizhuan and Daminghsan deposit which may be larger than the previous major deposits. Tungsten ore deposits of China exhibit obviously the granitoid was the ore-bringer to form tungsten ore deposits. The wolframite-bearing quarz veins in China indicate that tungsten mineralization took place by crystallization of wolframite preferentially unless $Ca^{{+}{+}}$ was introduced from outside into the magma-origin-fluid, since it is understood that the scheelite in the Sangdong ore deposit was preferentially precipitated, because of chemical affinity, from the tungsten fluid in which Fe and Ca ions were as sufficient as to form magnetite, wolframite and scheelite. Tungsten deposits in the world are divided into two systems; W-Mo-Sn system and W-Mo system. Most of tungsten deposits in China dated to about 196-116 Ma belong to the W-Mo-Sn system, while late Cretaceous tungsten deposits such as the Sangdong deposit in Korea belongs to the W-Mo system. The genetic order of tin-tungsten-molybdenum mineralization observed in the Moping tungsten mine in China and the Sangdong in Korea may be attributed to volatile pressures in the same magma chamber. It is assumed from ages of tungsten mineralizations that ore elements such as tin, tungsten and molybdenum might be generated periodically by nuclear fission and fusion in a part of the mantle and the element generated was introduced into the magma chamber. The periodical generation of elements had determined association, depletion and enrichment of tin and molybdenum in tungsten mineralization and it results in little association of cassiterite in tungsten deposit of late Cretaceous ages. Different mechanism of emplacement of the ore-bearing magma has brought various genetic types of tungsten deposits as shown in China and the world.
