Stabilization of Wet Foams for Porous Ceramics Using Amphiphilic Particles

  • Wet foams formed through direct foaming were stabilized using various concentrations of amiphiphilic particles that could control pore size and porosity. These porous materials showed moderate strength upon compression with high porosity. Bubble size and wet foam stability were tailored by amphiphile concentration, particle concentration, contact angle, and pH of the suspension to obtain crack-free porous solid after sintering. Closed and open pores were obtained with sizes of 30~300 ${\mu}m$ and porosities of over 80%.

  • The microstructural evolution in a 304 stainless steel weld during FSW was examined. The SZ and TMAZ showed typical dynamically recrystallized and recovered microstructures, respectively, The microstructural observation revealed that sigma phase was formed at the advancing side of the stir zone. A possibility was suggested that the rapid formation of the sigma phase is related to the transformation of austenite to delta-ferrite in the stir zone, from introduction of high strain and dynamic recrystallization during FSW.

  • Silicon oxide films were prepared by using five kinds of organosilicon compound as gas sources without oxygen by rf plasma-enhanced CVD (PECVD). UV light was irradiated on a substrate vertically during deposition to enhance film oxidation and ablation of carbon contamination in a deposited films. Films prepared with UV irradiation contained less carbon than those prepared without UV irradiation. The oxidation of the films was improved by UN irradiation. The effect of UV irradiation was, however, not observed when the films were prepared with tetramethy lsilane (TMS) which contained no oxygen atom. Dissociated oxygen atoms from an organosilicon compound were excited in the plasma with UV irradiation around the substrate surface and affected the enhancement of film oxidation and ablation of carbon in the films.

  • Initial oxide layer on the butt surface fragments during friction stir welding (FSW) and then often remains as a faint zigzag-line pattern on the cross section. When remnant of the oxide layer often adversely affects the mechanical properties in the weld, it is called as 'kissing-bond'. The present study systematically examines effect of oxide array on bend property in the root of friction stir (FS) welded Al alloy 1050 by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and then clarifies identity of the kissing-bond.

Molecular Species Composition of Phosphatidylcholine Isolated from Chum Salmon Meat Oil

  • Chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) meat oil contained high amounts of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) compared to oils extracted from other tissues of the fish. EPA and DHA occupied more than 25% of the total fatty acids in chum salmon meat oil. The main lipid classes in the meat oil were triacylglycerides and phospholipids. The major fatty acids of the molecular species composition of phosphatidylcholine isolated from the meat oil were DHA and EPA. DHA and EPA were the major molecular species in the phosphatidylcholine of chum salmon meat oil, representing 44% and 17%, respectively.

  • In this paper, we propose an approach to identify the driving environment for intelligent highway vehicles by means of image processing and computer vision techniques. The proposed approach mainly consists of two consecutive computational steps. The first step is the lane marking detection, which is used to identify the location of the host vehicle and road geometry. In this step, related standard image processing techniques are adapted for lane-related information. In the second step, by using the output from the first step, a four-stage algorithm for vehicle detection is proposed to provide information on the relative position and speed between the host vehicle and each preceding vehicle. The proposed approach has been validated in several real-world scenarios. Herein, experimental results indicate low false alarm and low false dismissal and have demonstrated the robustness of the proposed detection approach.

  • This study investigated the inhibitory effects of sea mustard on high-fat diet-induced obesity and hyperlipidemia in Sprague-Dawley rats. Sea mustard (Undaria pinnatifida) powder, sea mustard ethanol extract, and sea mustard ethanol-extracted residue were tested. The ethanol extracted residue had the most beneficial anti-hyperlipidemic activity. Alginate in the sea mustard was considered to be the key component. The ethanol-extracted residue of sea mustard also had antioxidant activity, which may be effective in preventing hyperlipidemia by increasing the enzymatic activity of superoxide dismutase, which can remove active oxygen from the bloodstream.
