  • This study was designed to evaluate the effect of processing method and surface design on the transverse strength of repaired denture base resin. Three heat-cured denture base resins(Vertex, Lucitone, Lang), one cold-cured resin(Lang), and one light-cured resin(Dentacolor gingiva material) were used for repair purpose. The specimens for 3-point flexure test were fabricated by five processing methods such as self-curing, pressure pot, boiling water, processing, and light curing. Finally to evaluate the effect of surface designs for repaired resin, three surface designs(butt, bevel, inverse bevel) were tested. Within the limit of this study, following conclusions were drawn. 1. Lucitone denture base material showed highest flexural strength of $131.37{\pm}2.15MPa$, and there were significant differences in stength between Lucitone and other resins. 2. Between two different self curing methods, self curing repair resin, Lang, cured by pressure pot method showed highest flexural strength, $58.49{\pm}4.89MPa$. 3. Among the heat cured repair resins, maximum transverse strength value of $88.69{\pm}16.60MPa$ was recorded in Lucitone group cured by processing method. 4. Inverse bevel joint design showed significantly higher bond strength than butt joint group, Maximum bond strength was $59.36{\pm}1.33MPa$ in inverse bevel joint design group.

  • The conventional approach for replacing missing maxillary lateral incisors dictates the placement of either a conventional porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM)bridge, resin-bonded fixed partial denture, or single implant prosthesis. However, several appearance-related disadvantages have been reported in the use of a prosthesis which incorporates a metal substructure. To address these limitations, metal -free restorative alternatives have been recently developed to expand the clinical options when fabrication of these prostheses is indicated. This clinical report describes the treatment of patients with a missing maxillary lateral incisor where the dentition was non-invasively restored with resin-bonded fixed partial denture(RBFPD) using In-Ceram and Targis-Vectris system.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of surface tretment on strength of denture repair as influenced by repair resin. Specimens were fabricated from VERTEX heat cured resin. Rectangular specimens($60\times10\times3mm$) were prepared according to the manufacturer's instruction for mixing and packing the resin into molds. Two methods of surface treatment were used and two methods of repair were also tested. The transverse strength of the resin was measured before repair and after repair by AUTOGRAPH testing machine. Six specimens of each category were prepared for testing for a total of 24 specimens. The mean value of the percent of recovery was calculated from the percent of recovery for six specimens. The results were as follows : 1. The mean value of the percent of recovery of each category makes a significant difference statistically one another(p<0.01), and "C" category, chloroform solvent-heat cured resin, has a better effect on repair srength than any other. 2. When no chloroform is used to treat the fractured surface there is no significant difference between the mean values of the percent of recovery influenced by the self curing resin and heat cured resin. But, when chloroform is used there is a significant difference between the two repair resins(p<0.01). 3. When self curing resin repair is used there is no significant difference between repair with and without the surface treatment of chloroform. But, when heat cured resin repair is used the use of chloroform treatment become significant statistically (p<0.01).

  • Resin-bonded bridge has been an alternative to conventional bridge, since resin-bonded bridge has many attractive advantages such as minimal tooth preparation, short chair time and low cost over conventional bridge. Unfortunately, however, it was reported that resin-bonded bridge showed high failure rate from debonding of retainer in spite of consecutive advances in preparation and materials. And it was shown that multiple abutments were more likely to fail. The majority of debonding failure was considered due to the mobility of the abutment during function. In this view, recently, modification in resin-bonded bridge design was tried. Single retainer, single pontic. 2-unit cantilevered resin-bonded bridge was applied to clinical performance and was shown as retentive or more retentive than fixed-fixed type resin-bonded bridge. This was consistent with the results of studies in 2-unit cantilevered resin-bonded bridges made with all ceramic, In-ceram. The purpose of this article was to overview principles of design and to analyze clinical results of 2-unit cantilevered resin-bonded bridge in comparison with the reports of fixed-fixed resin-bonded bridge.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to confirm the influence of commercially available carbonated water on denture resin by confirming the changes in the denture surface and adhesion of bacteria. Methods: Carbonated water available in the domestic market was used on specimens made of prosthetic resins. The top four products with respect to sales performance was deposited for 30 min, 24 h, and 48 h over the study groups and over one control group. The surface roughness was measured. Candida albicans was inoculated and cultured over these dentures at 37℃ on the study groups of 1 h, 24 h, and 48 h, and the number of colonies formed was measured. Results: As a result of comparing the surface roughness between groups by immersion time, the difference between groups was confirmed at 48 hours. The Trevi group showed a larger Rz than the Samdasoo group. As a result of comparing the surface roughness by time in each group, statistical significance was shown in the Ra value of the Seagram and the Rz value of the Chojung sparkling water (p<0.05). The Ra value of the Seagram was higher for 48 h than for 30 min, and the Rz value of the Chojung sparkling water was higher at 48 h than at 30 min (p<0.05). Candida albicans concentration increased over the course of immersion. Conclusions: It was confirmed that longer the specimen of the denture resin was immersed in carbonated water, more the surface roughness was affected and higher the number of attached bacteria.

  • A comparative study was conducted to evaluate the relationship of investing medium to the amount of vertical occlusal changes and to the differences of surface smoothness during denture construction. Three groups of 20 dentures, 30 sets of upper and lower were fabricated of conventional heatcuring acrylic denture base resin, using silicone-gypsum molding techniques, with or without covering the occlusal surfaces of the teeth by artificial stone and all-gypsum molding techniques. The distance between the two reference points indented by 1/2 round bur on the upper and lower frontal surfaces of each articulator were measured and recorded before processing and again after processing and remounting of each denture on the articulator. The differences between the two recordings indicated the amount of vertical opening during denture processing. The difference of surface smoothness were investigated and determined by 3 observers continual comparing of the two randomly selected dentures with each other, which were seperately selected as pairs from the different two groups of 20. The results obtained were as follows: 1. During resin processing no statistically significant differences of the amount of vertical occlusal changes were detected between any of the two groups of two silicone-gypsum and one allgypsum molding techniques, although the amount of vertical opening was somewhat increased when silicone-gypsum molding technique was used. 2. Surface smoothness of the processed denture was makedly by increased when silicone-gypsum molding technique was used.

  • The mainly used polymeric material for the denture is PMMA because of its cost and easiness to handle. So it was widely used material among dentists for past decades. But the acrylic-based denture materials have several common weak points such as shrinkage after curing and lack of strength. In order to solve these problems, we adapted one of hybrid system using acrylic polymer and vinyloligosilsesquioxane(POSS). POSS, which is a well known expandable monomer during polymerization process, may eventually suppress volumetric shrinkage. And the hybrid system makes it possible for the polymer to be stable in various severe conditions. Eight different kinds of samples were designed and synthesized. Each samples were characterized with dynamic mechanical analyser(DMA) to confirm their thermodynamic properties, fractured to analyze the cross-sectional morphology of the samples. And elongation, flexural and impact tests were also executed to evaluate the mechanical properties of the samples. From the results, hybrid composites had well defined crosslinked network structure compared to the widely used denture materials, and the mechanical strength improved without changing any surface condition as increment with POSS ratio in hybrid system. Fractured morphology showed homogeneous surfaces in spite of mutli component system, therefore we can conclude that the adoption of the POSS brought the reinforcement of the denture resin.

  • Purpose: This study compares the deformation of traditional resin dentures to resin dentures printed with digital light processing (DLP). Methods: Eleven edentulous research models were developed. Ten of them were made with traditional resin dentures. The remaining one was prepared for scanning and 3D (three-dimensional) printing. Ten traditional resin dentures were made, with the remaining artificial teeth created using 3D software and a DLP printer. Traditional resin dentures, 3D printed resin denture artificial teeth, and a denture base with artificial teeth were all cleaned simultaneously in an ultrasonic cleaner for 3 minutes. Three groups were assigned four artificial tooth measurement points, which were then measured with digital calipers. The measured data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The significance test was conducted using a nonparametric test Kruskal-Wallis test due to the small number of specimens (α=0.05). Results: The traditional resin dentures had the lowest strain rate at -0.04%, while the group that manufactured only artificial teeth had the highest strain rate at -0.09%. However, no statistically significant difference was observed between the 3 groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: During ultraviolet-type ultrasonic cleaning, traditional resin dentures (TD group) and denture base with artificial teeth made of DLP (DD group) demonstrated stable durability, whereas the artificial teeth made of DLP (AD group) with only artificial teeth did not show a good deformation rate.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of secondary heat treatment on dimensional changes of acrylic resin partial denture base. For this study, 6 specimens were made: 2 groups of 2 specimens, each was treated with $125^{\circ}C$ dry heat and glycerine heat for 3 minutes, and the others were prepared for control group. The change of the internal diameter of specimens were measured after 3 hrs, 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks by three-dimensional space analyzer. The results were as follows : 1. All of the acrylic resin denture bases showed tissue ward thermal contraction. 2. Thermal contraction of the mesial area reinforced with metal framework was lesser than that of the distal area without metal framework. 3. Thermal contraction of the lingual flange reinforced with metal framework occured more slowly than that of the buccal flange without the metal framework. 4. The thermal contraction of dry heat treated acrylic resin base, compared to glycerine heat group, was moderately greater and occurred acutely.
