Orotracheal intubation was used in 169 of patients (70.7%). As an anesthesia maintenance agent, drug containing sevoflurane was used in 153 of patients (64.0%). In performed treatment, dental restoration, sealant and stainless steel crowns were performed 3.8, 1.8 and 1.1 times per person. 129 patients (54.0%) attended follow-up appointments under 6 months and those of the number of appointments were 1 - 4 times in average. • The aim of this study was to investigate changes in treatment patterns within pediatric dentistry departments by analyzing the distribution of patients and treatment trends. To that end, treatment charts based on electronic medical records (EMR) from the Yonsei University Dental Hospital from 2008 to 2012 were collected and analyzed. The results showed a decrease in the number of new patients and patients cared for by non-specialists, while the number of foreign patients has increased. The under 2 years-old group accounted for a large portion of new patients. Dental caries, dental trauma, and malocclusion ranked as the top complaints. In terms of restoration treatment, the proportion of patients receiving composite resin, amalgam, and sealant has decreased, whereas self-curing glass ionomer and preventive resin restoration have increased. Single-visit endodontic treatment has been increasing, with a decreasing trend in multi-visit endodontic treatment. The rate of conservative pulp treatment, such as pulp capping and pulpotomy, has increased. For reducing patient anxiety, treatments under sedation have increased, especially with the use of nitric oxide. This investigation into the latest treatment trends and patient characteristics is expected to help pediatric dentists to make appropriate treatment plans.

The average of filled surfaces using amalgam, composites, sealants, and others were $2.8{\pm}3.9,\;1.6{\pm}2.8,\;2.9{\pm}3.2$, and $4.5{\pm}7.0$, respectively. The use of dental filling material according to region, the amalgam was the highest in Daegu and the resin was the highest in Pusan. • Rett syndrome is a progressive neurological disorder that occurs exclusively in females. The syndrome is characterized by regression of language, motor development, and stereotypic hand movement. Autistic behavior, breathing irregularities, gait dyspraxia, scoliosis, and seizure are also accompanied. The cause of Rett syndrome is unknown, however, it is believed that the X-chromosome might playa significant role in the development of the syndrome. Patients with this syndrome have unusual oral and/or digital habits such as abnormal chewing pattern, bruxism, hypersalivation, micrognathia, high vaulted palate, tongue protrusion with lower posture of tongue, hand biting, digit-hand sucking. Dentists who are aware of distinct manifestations of Rett syndrome will be able to aid in early diagnosis and treatment of the syndrome. Prior to dental treatment for a patient with the Rett syndrome under sedation or general anesthesia, one should assess the degree of hypersalivation, apnea, severity of autism, expected life span. Early recognition of the syndrome and also dental treatment with established strict preventive guidelines for patients with the Rett syndrome may obviate the necessity of sedation or general anesthesia. Two cases with the Rett syndome were reported. Both patients had most of the above mentioned typical manifestations of the syndrome. Dental treatment for the case 1(8-year-old) including caries control, stainless steel crown, sealant application was performed under general anesthesia. The case 2 could not be undergone the dental treatment due to poor general conditions.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics of the high caries risk group of 12-year-old children in Korea. Oral health status and interview data were collected from 23,089 children aged 12 years who participated in the 2015 Korean Children's Oral Health Survey. Subjects were classified into high-risk and low-risk groups according to the Significant caries (SiC) index, and the influence of each variable was analyzed. As a result of the study, the SiC index of the high-risk group was 5.08, which was about 9.6 times higher than the low-risk group. The risk factors associated with the high-risk group were in the order of the number of sealant teeth, dental treatment demand for the past year, perceived oral health status, gender, region, frequency of snack intake per day, and use of oral hygiene aids. In order to improve the oral health of children, appropriate preventive treatment and oral health education should be carried out with reference to the items indicated as risk factors in the high-risk group of dental caries.

  • The purpose of this study was to grasp the benefits from pit and fissure sealants and to analyze the factors of influencing the benefit amount by using the raw data of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for 2007~2013 targeting the subjects aged from 6 years in full to 18 years. The analysis was used STATA 11.0. As a result of the analysis, the following conclusions were obtained. It rose up to 1.24 pieces after carrying out the national health insurance coverage from averagely 0.93 piece until the year in 2007~2009 (up to November) when is before enforcing the national health insurance coverage in the pit and fissure sealants. The benefits from pit and fissure sealants depending on general characteristics were surveyed to be higher in the higher income level, in the more subscription to health insurance and private insurance, and in the more toothbrushing frequency per day. The factors that have influence upon the benefits from pit and fissure sealants were shown to include whether or not to have the national health insurance coverage in the pit and fissure sealants, income level, health insurance type and private insurance subscription appearance, and one-day toothbrushing frequency. Synthesizing the results, a rise in the benefits from pit and fissure sealants is shown in 2010 based on December 2009 when the national health insurance coverage in the pit and fissure sealants was implemented, but is showing the tendency of declining again from 2011. To increase the benefits from pit and fissure sealants, it is thought that the schemes will need to be discussed such as reinforcing publicity on the national health insurance coverage in the pit and fissure sealants, expanding a support for low-income bracket, and differentiating the outpatient cost sharing according to socio-economic level.
