The purpose of this exploratory study was to assess work performance of dental hygienists and identify factors influencing their work performance. A questionnaire was administered to 87 dental hygienists working dental clinics based in Ulsan during the period from June 2005 through July 2005. A total of 77 questionnaires were collected and used for analysis. SPSS 11.5 program was employed for statistical analysis. All data were expressed in terms of numbers, percentage and mean score. The results of the study are summarized as follows: 1. There was a significantly positive correlation between age and the level of work performance in the Scientific competency group and Esthetical competency group. 2. Unmarried dental hygienists demonstrated better work performance than married dental hygienists in Scientific, Esthetical and Personal competency groups, showing a statistically significant difference. 3. By education level, those with junior college degree had better work performance than those who are attending or graduated from college in the four groups. By workplace, those who were working at non-general hospitals demonstrated a higher level of performance in the three groups except the Ethical group, but the difference was not statistically significant. 4. A significantly positive relationship was observed between monthly pay and work performance in the Scientific, Personal and Esthetical competency groups. 5. A positive relationship was observed between work experience and performance in the Scientific competency group. But there was no difference between work experience and performance in the other three groups. 6. By working environment, those who were working with assistant nurses showed a higher level of performance than those working without assistant nurses in the Scientific competency group, and the difference was statistically significant.
The purpose of this study is to investigate work environment and job satisfaction of dental hygienists. The survey had collected 373 dental hygienists in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do areas. The results were as follow; 1. The overall average of job satisfaction was 3.30. 2. Differences in the general characteristics and job satisfaction were significantly high with high age, high educational level and high work experience for married people. It was also significantly high when people worked in Gyeongsangbuk-do rather than in Daegu. 3. Differences in work environment and job satisfaction were significantly high in large size of the hospital, patient management and consultation services rather than assistance, monthly salary rather than annular salary, the presence of training opportunity and benefit for long-term worker, and more other vacations and annual vacations. 4. The influence factors of general characteristics on job satisfaction were education, work area and marriage in order ($R^2$=0.092). 5. To investigate knowledge and attitude of parents about early childhood caries and dental caries prevention, a questionnaire survey was conducted on 247 parents of children who had oral screening experience among 3 to 5 years old children in 3 kindergartens in Jeonju city. A total of 220 completed questionnaires were selected for final analysis. The overall perception of the parents about oral health of the children was 82.3 points (10.7 / 13) in terms of 100 points. There were statistically significant correlations between maternal age (p = 0.027), maternal education level (p = 0.002), household monthly income (p = 0.000) and maternal oral health knowledge level. The main source of oral health information was 'dentist and dental hygienist'(83.6%) followed by 'Web search'(22.3%). Compared with the previous studies, the level of knowledge of parents about oral health of the children was improved. However, in order to raise awareness of the parents about the poorly assessed items in this study, it is necessary to increase the participation rate by advertising the national dental screening program for infants and children and make efforts to improve the quality of oral health education in screening.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the impacts of infection control education on dental hygienists' perceptions for hepatitis B and their behaviors. Materials and methods: Study participants were chosen by random selection among dental hygienists working in Seoul, Korea. A total of 150 questionnaires were sent out for the survey from April 2013 to May 2013, of which 140-excluding incomplete responses-were used for the study. Chi-square tests and t-tests were used (SPSS 19.0), and post-hoc analysis was performed as well. The maximum significance level was 0.05. Results: Average 1.53 times infection control education was taken, but dental hygienists' perceptions for hepatitis B and their behaviors did not show statistical differences whether the education was done or not. Practices to prevent infection showed differences depending on categories, especially disinfection and sterilization were well performed by educated group. The most common reasons for not taking the education and noncompliance with infection prevention guidelines are lack of time and opportunity due to busy schedule. Conclusion: 1. The more highly educated, the greater number of patients per day, and the greater size of hospitals, the better infection control education was conducted. 2. Although hepatitis B is one of the most common chronic liver diseases in Korea, no significant correlation between perceptions of hepatitis B and infection control education was found. 3. Dental hygienists who received infection control education performed more efficient practices for protection against infections than those who did not.
This study was carried out to evaluate the status of oral health in physically or mentally handicapped students. The status of oral health in 597 handicapped students of six special education institutes and 731 normal students in Chonbuk province were inspected by a dental hygienist from August to November of 1999. 1) The DT index(Decayed Teeth index) was significantly higher in handicapped students comparing with those of normal students. The proportions of children having gingivitis and malocclusion were also significantly higher in handicapped group (p<0.01). 2) The incidences of dental caries, gingivitis and malocclusion were significantly higher in mentally retarded students comparing with those of physical or sensory impairment groups(p<0.01). 3) Handicapped students participating in the regular school teeth-control program showed significantly low incidences of gingivitis and malocclusion comparing with non-participants. However, dental caries had no relationships with teeth control program. There were no differences between commuting and domitory-resident students in the incidences of dental caries, gingivitis and malocclusion.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting the actual condition and effectiveness of orthodontic treatment among some dental hygienists and students. This study was carried out from September to December, 2016 to describe the purpose of the study and the method of writing the questionnaire for some dental hygienists and students. The final 430 sections were analyzed and analyzed using PASW Statistics 18.0. First, the duration of orthodontic treatment was 34.4% for college students, 36.9% for orthodontic treatment for less than 2 ~ 3 years, and 62.3% for internal motivation. The factors affecting the orthodontic treatment effect were the patient's cooperativeness and the hospital's scale was the lowest. The higher the grade level, the more the clinical experience and dental part-time experience were, the higher the correlation between dental specialty and dental hygienist's medical service, education and counseling was .521(P<0.001). The higher the level of cooperation, the higher the grade level, the more dental treatment and orthodontic treatment experience, the lower the level of family co - operation. Therefore, it is important to emphasize the importance of cooperation of orthodontic patients and to develop a strategic program for each individual patient.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze the research trends on oral health literacy in South Korea and to suggest the direction of future research, Methods: The literatures were searched using KISS, RISS, KMBASE, KoreaMed, Nanet and NDSL. A total of 17,433 documents were retrieved by database searching. The final 34 literatures that satisfied the inclusion criteria were selected for analyzing. A content analysis was performed on 34 literatures on the topics of oral health literacy which had been published from 2012 to 2019. Results: Most of the 34 literatures, 23 articles and 11 thesises were descriptive-correlation studies, but there was no intervention study. The participants studied in the selected literatures were mostly adults followed by elderly and other groups including foreigner. More troubling sufficient samples and sampling methods were lacking at the population level. The validation of the used health literacy instruments was not sufficient. Conclusions: The unification of translation terminology for oral health literacy and the standardized instrument to test oral health literacy are needed. And to improve the level of oral health literacy, studies should be conducted using various variables. It is also necessary to develop the oral health education programs that can improve the level of oral health literacy. In the future, meta-analysis on the oral health literacy are needed for cumulating findings and drawing more reliable and general conclusions.
This study was conducted to collect the basic data to provide for the purpose of the development of dental field. This research is to find the relationship between the level of recognized empowerment of hygienists working in dental clinics and the factors influencing on work achievement in the system of dental clinics. The population of the research is some randomely chosen dental clinics located in Seoul City during the period from March 22 to April 30, 2010, and the sample of 256 female dental hygienists working in the field were recruited as the analysis object group. The data on general characteristics and empowerment were collected by a questionnaire survey. The collected data were analyzed with the SPSS WIN 12.0 program. The following shows the results of this study. 1. The empowerment level of the analysis subject group was 3.63. It is significant statistically that the longer working career or higher annual salary, the higher empowerment level (p<0.05). 2. It shows the high level of empowerment in the group of hygienists who are in education counsel (p<0.01), and who have a permanent job (p<0.05) than others. 3. There is a significant correlation among capability, age, career, annual salary (p<0.01). 4. There is a significant correlation among self determination, age(p<0.05), career (p<0.01), annual salary (p<0.05). 5. In regression analysis, career is proved as one of the significant factors that is related to the empowerment in dental hygienists (p<0.05). This finding shows high level of empowerment in dental hygienists who hold high level of career, annual salary, education counsel jobs, or permanent jobs. Therefore, I suggest with the result of the study that the organization of dental clinic needs to improve its capability and efficiency with the efficient manpower management. Particularly, there need to be various kinds of leadership-trainning and education-program development to enhance empowerment in hygienists as professionals through independent self-decision making experiences and role do experiences.
This research, which was conducted for dental hygienists, intended to check out what factors have an influence on their behaviors by measuring the level of self-efficacy and consciousness on the use of radiation, knowledge and attitude on radiation safety management(RSM). The subjects were 235 of the dental hygienists and this study performed a survey 8 May to 17 June, 2011. The survey results were as follows. 1. As a result of comparing the average of the self-efficacy according to the general characteristics, a statistically meaningful difference(p<0.05) was found according to health condition, protection facilities condition. 2. As a result of comparing the average of consciousness about radiation use according to the general characteristics, a statistically meaningful difference(p<0.05) was found according to medical institute type, protection facilities conditions. 3. As a result of comparing the average of the behaviors for RSM according to the general characteristics, a statistically meaningful difference(p<0.05) was found according to monthly income, medical institute type, whether or not education on radiation was conducted, the number of education, education type, and protection facilities condition. 4. As a result of analyzing what factors have an influence on the behaviors for RSM by employing the points of those behaviors as a dependent variable and self-efficacy, consciousness, knowledge and attitude as an independent variable in order to investigate those factors, it turned out that the factors which had a relatively larger influence on the point of behaviors were attitude and self-efficacy by that order(p<0.05). In conclusion, we believe that a variety of programs should be offered to provide knowledge on RSM as a prerequisite for improving the level of RSM behaviors by dental hygienists.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of professional oral healthcare program in eldery residents long-term care facilities. Ninety-four elderly residents from 5 different facilities in Asan participated in this study. The subjects were divided into 3 groups, with 32 in experimental group I, 30 in experimental group II, and 32 in the control group. Subjects in experimental group I were treated by a dental hygienist with professional oral healthcare and received daily oral care from caregivers who had completed elderly oral healthcare course. Subjects in experimental group II received daily oral care from caregivers who had completed elderly oral healthcare course. Control group received daily oral care from caregivers. These 3 groups were tested for dental plaque, halitosis, tongue coating, and salivary flow at baseline, and after 4 and 12 weeks of treatment. There were significant differences in the dental plaque index between the groups, mediate times, and mediate methods, in halitosis between the mediate methods, and in tongue coating between the mediate times, as well as the mediate methods. Finally, salivary flow was significantly different with regard to mediate methods between experimental group II and the control group. Therefore, to improve the oral health condition of elderly residents, involvement of a part-time dentist and scheduled professional oral healthcare are necessary. Furthermore, elderly oral healthcare education for nursing staff, including managers, should be provided.
