Short Communication: Links between Dental Hygiene Curriculum and Dental Hygiene Task Analysis

  • Background: The problem with current dental hygienist education is that it operates as an education system based on the national examination rather than on a practical basis; thus, graduates have difficulties in practice after obtaining their license. This study aimed to propose a job-oriented curriculum by analyzing the links between the task analysis of Korean dental hygienists and dental hygiene learning goals. Methods: This study performed a relationship analysis based on a second job analysis study of dental hygienists conducted by the Korea Health Personnel Licensing Examination Institute and the learning goals of the Korean Dental Hygiene Faculty Association. Results: Based on the links between the task and learning goals of the dental hygienist, they were classified into six types: 1) tasks listed in the license exam and learning goal, 2) tasks not listed in the license exam but listed in learning goals, 3) tasks not listed in learning goals, 4) learning goals not related to tasks, 5) learning goals listed in a few tasks, and 6) tasks related to several learning goals. The results showed that most of them correspond to the 5th classification, followed by the 3rd and 4th categories, which are mostly basic science learning goals. Tasks without learning goals are not included in the curriculum; thus, the curriculum needs to be supplemented. The overlapping learning goals of several subjects for one job skill must be reduced in job-oriented education. Conclusion: We suggest that the dental hygiene curriculum be developed based on task analysis and reflected in the national dental hygienist exam. The clinical practice performance of dental hygienists will take further leap forward through task-oriented education.

치과위생사 업무인지와 법률화 필요 요구도 조사 연구 (Dental Hygienists' Work Cognition and Demand for Related Legislation)

  • Objectives: This study aimed to identify the importance of the directivity of reflecting on a realistic task when aiming to reorganize a relevant law for dental hygienists through examining dental hygiene students' perceived need for a relevant law on dental hygiene related work. Methods: A survey was conducted targeting dental hygiene students from March 28 to April 30, 2018. The following findings were obtained. The results were summarized as follows. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS WIN 21.0 statistical program. Results: With reference to the influence of the need for a work-related legislation on dental hygienists' awareness of their legal rights, findings revealed that the latter was higher when there was higher involvement in precision impression procedures, higher involvement in occlusal adjustment in the middle stage, and higher perceived need for legislation on a comprehensive dental hygiene course (all p<0.05). Conclusions: Based on these findings, it is considered necessary to pursue a national solution for modifying the relevant legal system to provide institutional support for dental hygienists' work. Additionally, the worry in the whole dentistry in order to establish dental hygienists' task.

의료인 치과위생사의 전문능력 향상을 위한 치위생학과 교육과정 제안 (Dental hygiene curriculum proposals to improve the ability of dental hygienists as medical professionals)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to propose contents of a curriculum and training program for dental hygienists as medical professionals by surveying the opinions of clinical dental hygienists and dental hygiene professors. Methods: The subjects were 192 clinical dental hygienists and 193 dental hygiene professors. They answered questionnaires that consisted of grading each task based on its importance: a) for dental hygiene students to learn, b) to perform autonomously in clinical practice, and c) the expectancy of the task to change when dental hygienists become medical professionals. Data analysis was performed using an independent sample T test to capture differences between clinical dental hygienists and dental hygiene professors. The terms in the answers of open-ended questionnaires were extracted. We used R 3.5.0, R Recommender, and Wordcloud software packages. Results: Calculus removal had the highest scores for dental hygiene students to learn and expectancy to change when dental hygienists become medical professionals. Physiotherapy of temporomandibular disorders (TMD), planning, performing, and assessment of community oral health programs had the lowest scores in autonomy in clinical practice. The dental hygiene professors gave higher scores in most of the tasks for dental hygiene students to learn, autonomy in clinical practice, and expectancy to change, than did clinical dental hygienists. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), job ethics, and communication were the most frequently mentioned terms in the training as medical professionals program contents. Conclusions: In the future, it will be necessary to study the curriculum to improve the proficiency of dental hygienists as medical professionals.

Possibility of a Standardized System for Task-Related Hierarchal Positions of Dental Hygienists

  • Background: Despite the demand for greater competence of dental hygienists in recent times, and the consequent standardization of systems in the organizations, there is a lack of a proper system for hierarchal positions of dental hygienists. The aim of this study was to identify the tasks performed by Korean dental hygienists in various work settings and hierarchal positions to suggest a standardized system for task-related hierarchal positions. Methods: A survey was conducted by sending questionnaires to 966 dental hygienists, and responses from 757 participants were included in the final analysis. The survey comprised questions regarding participants' general characteristics, tasks, current positions, and the internal policies or standards of the respective organizations to define these positions. The participants' positions were analyzed as frequency and cross-sectional analysis with respect to their general characteristics, their place in the organizational charts, the size of their workplaces, and differences in the tasks performed. Results: Data showed that 82.6% of the hospitals and clinics in Korea have organizational systems to determine the positions, and there was a significant difference in the systems according to the size of the health facility (p<0.05). The standards or policies used to define positions within general or university hospitals were determined by internal regulations or bylaws, whereas work experience was the major determinant of positions in smaller dental hospitals or clinics. The main tasks performed by dental hygienists in Korea were dental assistance (81.2%), routine dental hygiene tasks (53.4%), and administrative tasks, such as reception and billing (46.1%). Conclusion: Most dental hygienists in Korea are actively involved in dental assistance. Therefore, their specific tasks and responsibilities should be standardized more effectively. The data obtained from this study can be used to establish a standardized position system.

치위생과정(ADPIE)의 임상적용 가능성과 실천방안 모색 (A Study on Clinical Feasibility and Practical Strategies for Dental Hygiene Process (ADPIE))

  • 치위생과정을 임상에서 활용하고 정착시키기 위한 방안을 모색하고자 SEM을 이용하여 치과위생사 업무 자율성과 치위생과정의 임상적용 기대효과 및 장애요인이 임상적용 의향에 미치는 효과를 분석하고, 치위생과정에 대한 태도가 임상적용 의향에 미치는 매개효과를 검증한 결과는 다음과 같다. 가설적 모형은 ${\chi}^2=421.67$, GFI=0.858, CFI=0.915, TLI=0.896, RMR=0.039, RMSEA=0.099로 적합한 것으로 나타났다. SEM을 검증한 결과, 치과위생사 업무 자율성(${\beta}=0.398$, p<0.05)과 치위생과정 기대효과(${\beta}=0.363$, p<0.01)는 치위생과정 태도에 정(+)의 방향으로, 치위생과정 태도(${\beta}=0.678$, p<0.05)는 임상적용 의향에 정(+)의 방향으로 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 치과위생사 업무 자율성(${\beta}=0.269$, p<0.05)과 기대효과(${\beta}=0.246$, p<0.01)는 치위생과정 태도를 매개로 임상적용 의향에 간접적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 위의 결과로 치과위생사의 업무 자율성, 치위생과정에 대한 기대효과와 태도는 임상적용 의향에 영향을 미치는 중요한 요인임을 확인하였다. 따라서 치위생과정을 임상에 정착시키기 위해서는 치과위생사 역량을 제고하여 업무 자율성을 확보해야 하며, 치위생과정에 대한 경영적 효과와 가치에 대한 객관적인 검증이 이루어져야 한다.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyzes the Job of Dental Hygienists in Dental (Clinics) Hospitals the Capital region. The results are as follows : (1) Job importance of dental hygienists were order 'photographing in Dental Radiology', 'Management of Dental clinic', 'Oral prophylaxis', in case education-training need was order 'dental health insurance', 'Oral prophylaxis', 'Management of Dental clinic'. duty more than 5.0 of job importance and education-training need was as 'dental health education', 'Oral prophylaxis', 'preventive dental treatment', 'dental assistance (cooperation)', 'photographing in Dental Radiology', 'dental health insurance', 'Management of Dental clinic', Duty of practice centering in Dental (Clinics) Hospitals except 'Public oral health'. (2) Job importance and education-training need of task increased most of job importance in proportion to education-training need. (3) No significantly between dental hospital hygienist and dental clinic hygienist difference of job importance and education-training need according to work place. but 'Management of Dental clinic' and 'dental health insurance' of dental hospital hygienist lower than dental clinic hygienist. (4) The results job importance compare less 3 years to more 3 years of dental hygienists were perceive significantly 'dental health education', 'Public oral health', 'dental health insurance', 'Management of Dental clinic' the other hand, education-training need was perceive significantly 'preventive dental treatment'.

Effects of Empathic Ability and Campus Life Stress on Stress Coping Behaviors in Dental Hygiene Students

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of empathic ability and campus life stress on the stress coping behaviors among 395 dental hygiene students. The analysis was performed using PASW Statistics ver. 18.0, and the following conclusions were obtained. The empathic concern factor was the highest in the subscale of empathic ability (3.60). The interpersonal relationship stress was 1.65 and the task-related stress was 2.72. The stress coping behaviors were the highest among the sub-domains, with 3.69 for wishful thinking. The differences of stress coping behaviors according to general characteristics were as follows. The lower the age and grade, the higher the problem-focused coping; when they were religious there was a high pursuit of seeking social support. When they were satisfied with their economic level, wishful thinking was high. There was a low negative correlation between empathic concern and interpersonal relationship stress in campus life (p<0.01). There was a positive correlation between personal distress and task-related stress (p<0.001). The relationship between empathic ability and stress coping behaviors was most associated with personal distress and wishful thinking. Among the sub-domains of stress coping behaviors, factors that have a common impact on personal distress and seeking social support are viewpoint acceptance. Factors supporting emotional focus and wishful thinking were task-related stress. Dental hygiene students are not able to completely eliminate the stress that they are actually under. However, as the research results show, it is necessary to use stress coping techniques to cope effectively with individual tendencies and situations, and to improve the ability to sympathize with another individual.

치과위생사의 임상치과 핵심역량 개발 (Development of clinical dental competencies in dental hygienists)

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to identify the requirements for the clinical dental tasks in the dental hygienists using the frequency of dental hygienists' tasks in the Korean dental clinics, and to provide them with the core competencies for achieving these. Methods: This study was based on evaluation of a self-reported survey. The dental hygienists were investigated upon classification of their tasks into direct and assistant performances, and the dentists were investigated by the competency level of the dental hygienists. The data from 481 clinical dental hygienists and 67 dentists were used for final analysis in this study, excluding the subjects who provided incomplete or inappropriate responses to the survey. The collected data were analyzed by frequency analysis. Results: The clinical dental core competency tasks of the dental hygienists were divided into 4 tasks for common dentistry, 4 for periodontics, 5 for conservative dentistry, 5 for pediatric dentistry, 5 for dental prosthodontics, and 3 for dental orthodontics. Clinical dental core competency tasks of the dental hygienists were performed more frequently of tasks performance than 8.0, and dentists required competence level was similar to that of most dental hygienists clinical dental core competencies. Conclusions: It is necessary to check whether the curricula of the universities include the competencies for the students enough to perform the corresponding tasks and the core competencies need to be reflected in the curricula. The clinical dental core competencies need to be agreed by dental hygienists, and it is necessary to be organized as the evaluation guide of the institute of dental hygiene education and evaluation and utilized as the national examination.

국내 치과 웹사이트에 대한 사용성 평가 (Evaluation of dental web site usability in Korea)

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study is to evaluate the dental website usability in Korea. The dental website included dental university hospital, network dental hospital and dental office. Methods: The study was carried out by three age groups including twenties, thirties, and forties. Each group consisted of ten customers and evaluated twelve websites of dental hospitals. Each was assigned to four hospitals and three tasks including easiness of online reservation, preventive information, and treatment information. They filled out the self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire included the easiness of on-line reservation, satisfaction on the quality and quantity of preventive informations, satisfaction on the quality and quantity of treatment informations, predictiveness on the sub-menu, usefulness of site map, information on the main page of web site, usefulness of decision on visit to dentistry, and revisit intention. Results: The easiness of on-line reservation was the highest in the private dental office, and university dental hospital and network dental hospitals followed in conducting task(1). The anticipated value and measurement on the usefulness of web site were the lowest in network dental hospitals and the time interval between two values was 57 seconds. This discrepancy showed the largest difference. The satisfaction on treatment information in task(3) was higher than that of the satisfaction on preventive information in task (2). The revisit intention was the highest in dental university hospitals. Conclusions: This study showed the comparison in usefulness of web site of university dental hospitals, network dental hospitals and private dental office. The web site focused on the treatment information rather than preventive information. This study suggested that the most important function of dental web site would be the preventive information that was mainly operated by the role of dental hygienists rather than treatment information in the future.

치과위생사의 치과 내 소음인식도와 청력관련 특성 및 업무와의 관련성 (The relationship between noise awareness, hearing ability, and dental hygiene performance in dental hygienists)

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between noise awareness, hearing ability, and dental hygiene performance in dental hygienists. Methods: The subjects were 234 dental hygienists in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, and Incheon. The questionnaire consisted of 3 questions of general characteristics of the subjects, 1 question of noise awareness, 3 questions of hearing ability, 5 questions of dental hygiene performance, 1 question of noise reduction necessity, and 2 questions of noise control. Noise awareness, dental hygiene performance, and noise reduction necessity were measured by Likert 5 scale. Cronbach's alpha was 0.825 in dental hygiene performance reliability. Results: There was a significant difference in noise recognition by age(p<0.01) and working career(p<0.05). Those who pumped up the higher TV volume accounted for 31.6% and 3.0% had hearing impairment in the regular health checkup. 3.4% of the respondents complained of hearing loss, ear fluid, and equilibrium problem diagnosed by the doctors. The relationship between the type of workplace environment and task performance showed a significant difference. Those who work in the dental hospitals had high score of 3.43, while those who work in dental clinics had 3.20(p<0.05). The increased level of noise recognition affected the task performance and it is necessary to reduce the noise level. More try must be focused on the noise exposure prevention. Conclusions: In order to reduce the problems due to noise and improve their quality of life, it is necessary to change the noise recognition in the work place.
