Methods: For 240 students enrolled in the Department of Dental Hygiene in Area, Daegu, the College Student Occupational Personality Scale (OPSU) was administered. Results: The higher the major satisfaction (F=10.589, p<0.000) and the higher the major performance (F=3.704, p<0.01), the higher the vocational personality competency. The average occupational personality competency for job adaptation was 3.96±0.47 points (out of 5 points). As for the average for each sub-area, consideration was the highest at 4.51±0.42, and confidence was the lowest at 3.54±0.84. Among professional personality competencies, the average of each sub-area showed the highest positive correlation in the order of positivity (r=0.835, p<0.00), reliability (r=0.769, p<0.00), and community consciousness (r=0.767, p<0.00), and consideration (r=0.696, p<0.00) showed the lowest correlation. Conclusions: Personalized career and employment education should be provided in consideration of the individual occupational personality level of dental hygiene students considering the characteristics of the health and medical fields, and individual counseling should be provided in areas that are insufficient or supplemented. In addition, dental hygiene ethics education is necessary for the development of vocational personality competencies in the dental hygiene curriculum, and universities should spare no support for completing vocational personality education programs in preparation for the future society by using comparative programs.

  • Recently, there has been an increasing interest in the regulation of medical & dental profession in South Korea due to various medical scandals & exacerbated commercialism. Consequently, the voice asking for strengthening the license management of medical & dental profession is rising. However, there is an absolutely lacking discussion on self-regulation of the Korean dentist community. This study investigated International Society of Dental Regulators and dental regulatory authorities in the U.K., Ontario in Canada, California in the U.S. and Australia. In addition, this study examined what situations Japan was in, which was similar to Korea in terms of systems. In the U.K., the U.S., Canada and Australia, there are independent dental regulatory authorities, which place emphasis on lay personnel participation. In addition, the organizations prepared very specific and detailed ethics, standards, and punishment guidelines to be followed by professionals. And, various efforts are being made to secure transparency and trust. As a result of this study, self-regulation in Korea seems to require an open approach that embraces civil society, and it is considered that dentist should lead social discussion more positively.

  • Objectives: In this study, we aimed to develop a systematic tool that can evaluate the effects of interprofessional education (IPE) by applying four core competencies (values/ethics for interprofessional practice, roles/responsibilities, interprofessional communication, and teams and teamwork) and an educational evaluation model to evaluate the learning, behavior of learners, and results step by step. Methods: Previous studies on IPE evaluation tools were analyzed, and an evaluation tool (draft) was developed by modifying questions suitable for evaluation according to the Kirkpatrick model's stages and core competencies. The evaluation tool was completed by conducting a Delphi survey twice with 4-6 experts. To analyze the Delphi survey, the content validity index (CVI) was calculated, and the reliability coefficient (Cronbach's alpha coefficient) was used to measure reliability. Results: 29 questions on pre-education, consisting of learning and behavior stages, and 54 questions on post-education, consisting of reaction, learning, behavior, and results stages, were developed. The CVI and Cronbach's alpha coefficient values were >0.8 and >0.6, respectively. Conclusions: The IPE evaluation tool developed in this study is expected to contribute to the evaluation of the educational level of IPE and the identification of points for improvement when applied to various educational settings.

Methods: The liberal arts curricula of fifteen 3 year and 4 year dental hygiene departments in Korea and other countries were analyzed. A survey was conducted on 801 selected dental hygiene majors from December 8 to 12, 2014. A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 750 dental hygiene students and 150 dental hygiene professors. The questionnaire consisted of 5 questions of general characteristics and 13 questions including curricula change, usability of curricula, awareness of the suitability of dental hygiene curricula, and validity of curricula. Cronbach'a alpha was 0.71 in this study. Results: The grade point average in the liberal arts courses in Korean 4 year dental hygiene departments were 29, which was higher than that in 3 year dental hygiene departments of 13.2. There were large disparities among the colleges in the credits of these courses. The most common liberal arts courses in 4 year dental hygiene departments were foreign languages, man, society and communication, and natural science. In 3 year dental hygiene departments, English and foreign languages were the most common courses, followed by computer, man and society, philosophy and ethics. Foreign languages were considered to be the liberal arts course that should be most strengthened according to the job environment change of dental hygienist in globalizing society, followed by social psychology and pedagogy. Conclusions: Liberal arts courses were offered in the 4 year dental hygiene departments than in the 3 year dental hygiene departments in Korea, but there were a great deal of differences between colleges. The preparation of standardized guidelines on liberal arts courses are necessary. Liberal arts courses should support the performance skill and knowledge of the dental hygienists.

  • Purpose: This descriptive study investigated the relationship between death awareness and life ethics awareness, according to life stress, among students in the department of paramedics. Methods: General characteristics were identified using means and frequency, and the differences between the two military models were analyzed using the χ2-test and t-test by dividing them into lower and higher groups based on the mean life stress score (99.76 points). Results: Those with high life stress had higher death awareness than those with low life stress at 114.11 points. In contrast, those with low life ethics experienced more severe life stress with a score of 145.61 points (t=-2.609, p=.010)(t=-2.953, p=.003). The death recognition attitude and bioethics according to the degree of living stress-showed a significant correlation between the low and high groups (r=.188, p=.043) (r=.201, p=.042). Conclusion: Paramedic students require education on how to cope with life stress. However, access to education is limited to people living in modern times. As a potential solution to this problem, observing videos on the Internet is recommended. Moreover, we suggest accessing Internet and smart phone applications for advertising/educational purposes.

  • Background: The selection of an occupation is typically based on individuals' personalities and the characteristics of occupations, which significantly affect occupational consciousness. The present study aimed to enhance the occupational achievement level of and provide fundamental data for student counseling in order to develop competitive professional workers by understanding the occupational consciousness of freshmen and motivating them as dental hygienists with career development plans, as freshmen majoring in dental hygiene eventually play a significant role in the field of dentistry as dental hygienists. Methods: The surveys were distributed to 160 freshmen in the dental hygiene department and were subsequently collected. The data from 142 surveys were used for analysis, as 18 surveys were excluded due to insincere responses. The survey contents included questions related to major selection and satisfaction, including motives for selecting a dental hygiene major, prior knowledge on a dental hygiene major and a career as a dental hygienist, satisfaction level of the major, and reasons for dissatisfaction in cases if applicable, as well as questions related to occupational consciousness, including career prospects for dental hygienists, opinions on the occupation, and conditions of job selection. Results: High employment rate with good salary level ranked highest (43.7%) among motives to apply the dental hygiene major, followed by the desire to be a professional worker (21.1%) and recommendation by acquaintances. Of those who responded, 50.7% indicated a normal level of satisfaction with the major, and 69.9% responded that they had prior knowledge regarding the dental hygiene major and/or field of dental hygiene. These results may be due to youth unemployment and the occurrence of job preparation immediately after students enter university, which is a result of the difficulty in job seeking. In terms of career prospects, 48.6% of students responded with "growing a little bit," followed by "growing a lot" (28.9%), "no difference from now" (21.1%), and "other" (1.4%). Regarding opinions on the occupation, 65.5% responded that occupation was an tool with which to make and income or a living, 23.2% responded that occupation was for dreams and self-realization, and 11.3% responded that occupation was for success in life and maintaining social status. Regarding the conditions of job selection, the responses included that the workplace had good working conditions (39.4%), good interpersonal relationships (21.8%), and a higher salary (18.3%). This may reflect the change in work ethics among university students, according to the trend of the times. Conclusion: Based on the results of the present study, we found that educational guidance to enhance the level of satisfaction with the major, and career guidance to understand and apply the clear vision and long-term job security are necessary.

  • This study conducted a questionnaire survey on 155 dental hygienists in Busan, Gyeongnam to understand the effect of dental hygienists' job identity on job retention. The study was conducted after being reviewed by the Research Ethics Review Committee (1041449-201912-HR-003). For data analysis, hierarchical regression analysis was carried out to check the effect of three details of job identity on job retention step by step. As a result, among the details of job identity, there was an influence on job retention in the order of empathy for the job (β=.358, p<.001), relationship between job and individual (β=.562, p<.001), and work and unity (β=.562, p<.001). Therefore, it is judged that it would be helpful to maintain a job if the educational institution with the Department of Dental Hygiene conducts classes on occupational identity in a more comprehensive sense.
