Objectives: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the level of ethical dilemma and related factors in some clinical dental hygienists. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 290 clinical dental hygienists in G metropolitan city from January 5 to February 27, 2015. The instruments used for this study were the modified ethical dilemma scale developed Lee, Kim and Park. The questionnaire consisted of dental hygienists & subjects(4 items), dental hygienists & professionals(12 items), dental hygienists & partners(7 items), and medical information(31 items). The questions were measured by Likert 5 points scale. The statistical analyses include descriptive statistics, t-test and stepwise multiple regression analysis using SPSS 12.0 program. Results: Dental hygienists perceived ethical dilemma scored 3.35 and 3.24 except medical information. Professionals and partners in sub-domain of ethical dilemma by experience of ethics education and ethical conflict were high and showed statistically significant difference. The strongest predictor of dental hygienists and subjects was job satisfaction. The strongest predictor of dental hygienists and partners was adequacy of ethics education in college/university. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the types of ethics, professional intuition, and ethical competencies of students majoring in dental hygiene and to provide appropriate dental hygiene education by confirming the relationship between them. Methods: A survey was conducted from March 2 to March 30, 2021 using a questionnaire, and the data were analyzed using chi-square test, one-way analysis of variance, and Pearson's correlation analysis. Results: Regarding the ethics type, absolutists accounted for 36.1%, relativists for 33.8%, subjective for 16.5%, and exceptionalists for 13.5% of the respondents. Dental hygiene professional intuition scored 3.53 points, and ethical competence scored 3.52 points. The points for professional intuition and ethical competence according to the type of ethics were 3.64 and 3.61 for the absolutist, 3.55 and 3.53 for the relativist, 3.47 and 3.53 for the exceptionalist, and 3.27 and 3.37 for the subjective, respectively. The propensity of idealism showed a positive correlation with dental hygiene professional intuition and ethical competence (p<0.001). The tendency of relativism correlated with ethical competence, and ethical competence correlated with dental hygiene professional intuition (p<0.05). Conclusions: The implication of this study is that students majoring in dental hygiene must have clear and high dental hygiene professional intuition and ethical competence in order to demonstrate their potential positively. Therefore, ethics education and proper decision-making training must be included in the dental hygiene curriculum.
Objectives: We classified items required for dental hygienists' ethics training by domains. We administered a survey on experts using the Delphi method to collect opinions for guiding future trainings. Methods: 33 participants were selected and analyzed using the Delphi method thrice. Results: For relationships with patients, the item "1.3.1.1 I can keep the confidentiality of the information obtained from patients, including mature minors, related to their specific disease and treatment during medical care as well as other personal information of the patients." had the highest mean value (mean=4.88). For medical and social relations, "2.3.2.2 I can understand how staff provide dental services as a team and explain a dental hygienist's roles and responsibilities that enable a team to function effectively." had the highest mean value (mean=4.85). For individual specialized fields, "3.1.1.1 I can explain the roles and responsibilities in public health of individuals, the public, the state and professional dental hygienist." showed the highest mean value (mean=4.82). Conclusions: We identified 3 categories, 14 sub-categories, and 53 items on the scope of training and standards for ethical competencies for practical applications in professional ethics training of dental hygienists.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to examine the correlation and influencing factors among ethics position, self-esteem, and perception of patient medical information protection in the dental hygiene students. Methods: This is a cross sectional study using the structured questionnaire. A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 202 dental hygiene students using the stratified sampling method from September 1 to November 1, 2013. The questionnaire was modified and complemented from Ethics Position Questionnaire (EPQ). The questionnaire included EPQ, self-esteem, and perception of patient medical information protection. Data were analyzed by independent t-test, one way ANOVA, Duncan's multiple comparison analysis, Pearson's correlation analysis, and stepwise multiple regression analysis using IBM SPSS Statistics 21.0 program. Results: There was a positive correlation among all the variable including idealism position, self-esteem, and perception of patient medical information protection, The factors influencing on the perception of patient medical information protection were idealism position (${\beta}=0.271$, p<0.001) and self-esteem (${\beta}=0.248$, p<0.001). The corrected explanation power of the model was 15.1%. Conclusions: As the idealism position and self-esteem become higher, the perception of patient medical information protection gets higher. Therefore, this study suggests that it is needed to develop and vitalize implement the appropriate programs enhancing ethics consciousness, proper position, and self-esteem in the dental hygiene students receiving the education for their professionalism in the dental hygiene curricula.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the ethical climate affects the job satisfaction of the clinical dental hygienists. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 207 dental hygienists. The data were analyzed by t-test or one-way ANOVA, multiple regression analysis, and Pearson's correlation analysis using IBM SPSS Statistics 19.0 program. Results: The factors affecting the job satisfaction of the general and ethical climate were the work experiences, the completion of vocational ethics education, the self interest type, the friendship type, the rule and the procedure type. When working experience and vocational ethics education are completed, self interest type and friend type have improved job satisfaction as the score increases, while job satisfaction is lowered as the rule and procedure type are increased. The topic of academic integrity is an important public concern that has emerged in higher education. Recent surveys at U.S. and Canadian dental schools revealed that cheating and plagiarism were significant problems in dental schools. In addition, some schools stated that cheating had increased compared to a decade ago. Various institutional rituals have been implemented to enhance the academic integrity environment of U. S. and Canadian dental schools. Furthermore, the application of honor code which is dealing with ethical issues has been reported to improve the attitudes and behaviors of students. Since there have been no reported studies regarding ethics curricula in Korean dental schools, further studies should be needed to assess academic integrity policies, violations, and the results of the measures in Korean dental schools. Additionally, the challenge to provide professional ethics curricula for dental students must be conducted with respect and humanity for our students and thus, students will be more likely to respond positively to expectations in terms of ethical behaviors. Therefore, the outcome is clearly and undoubtedly link to better care for patients.
