Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the association between dental implants and cognitive function in community-dwelling older adults. Methods: Data were collected from the baseline survey (2016-2017) of the Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study. The study sample comprised 1115 community-dwelling people aged 70 years to 84 years who had 0-19 natural teeth. Dental implants and natural teeth were identified by panoramic radiography, while the cognitive function was assessed by the Korean version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE-KC). The association between dental implants and cognitive function was analyzed by multiple linear regression. Sensitivity analysis was performed to test for potential bias. Results: The mean number of natural teeth in the study population was 9.50 (standard deviation [SD], 6.42), and the mean MMSE-KC score was 24.93 (SD, 3.55). In the simple univariate analysis, tooth replacement, age, sex, smoking status, alcohol consumption, body mass index, osteoporosis, number of natural teeth, periodontitis, chewing discomfort, tooth-brushing frequency, education level, monthly household income, participation in economic activity, living alone, and marital status had a significant impact on the association. After adjusting for confounders, the association between dental implants and cognitive function remained significant (B, 0.85; standard error, 0.40; p<0.05). Age, body mass index, periodontitis, tooth-brushing frequency, and education level were also significantly associated with cognitive function. The results of the sensitivity analyses were consistent with those of the primary analysis. Conclusions: Dental implants were associated with cognitive function in older adults living in the community. Dental implants as tooth replacements may play a role in preserving cognitive function.
Purpose : The aim of this study was to assess the validity of standard deviation of gray scale histogram in digital subtraction radiography as a test parameter for superimposition error. Materials and Methods : Twenty periapical radiographs were used as baseline images and they were copied to exclude the influence of exposure geomety and contrast differences. These subsequent images were linearly displaced by 0.1-0.5 mm in the x-. y- and xy-directions, rotated by 0.5-3° and distorted by angular contraction of 1-5° in x- and y-axis before subtraction. The standard deviations of gray levels in the subtraction images were obtained and paired t-tests were performed. Pearson correlation coefficients(r) were calculated between the standard deviations and the superimposition errors. Results : Linear displacement showed high correlation coefficients of 0.997, 0.997 and 0.995 in x-. y- and xy-axis respectively. Statistically significant different standard deviation existed among all linearly displaced groups(p<0.05). Distortion showed relatively low correlation coefficients of 0.982 and 0.959 in x- and y-axis. The standard deviations between the two distortion groups were statistically significant different(p<0.05). Conclusion : Standard deviation of gray level distribution in digital subtraction images is satisfactory but not perfect similarity measure to assess the superimposition errors.
For the purpose of an estimation of age based on the changes in the human dental cavity caused by increase in age, 1,208 extracted teeth in the parts from central incisors and lateral incisors and lateral incisors to second premolars of upper and lower, right and left side were evaluated and analized all of surface index of pulp cavity. The results are as follows : 1. The surface index of pulp caxities of upper and lower, central and lateral incisors, and tend to decrease regularly as the age increase. So above teeth are more applicable to age estimation than canine and premolars. 2 For the purpose of age estimation by surface index of pulp cavity of central and lateral incisor, linear equations are as follows. Upper central incisor: X=(16.301-Y)/0.12 Upper lateral incisor: X=(16.620-Y)/0.11 Lower central incisor: X=(20.963-Y)/0.16 X=Age Y=Surface index of pulp cavity Correlation coefficient between chronologic age and estimated age is 0.699 3.The least error(3.3 yrs of age)reveals in 41-45 age group, which shows the highest possibility of estimation of age. The highest error(4.1 yrs of age)reveals in 61-65 age group and 56-60 age group.
Bone destruction was induced experimentally by the insertion of a bit of the arsenic compound into the pulp chambers of the right premolars and the artificial bone defects were produced in the periapical regions of the left premolars in 7 dogs. The serial standardized periapical radiographs using aluminum stepwedge attached to the XCP instruments, and resin bite blocks were taken following insertion of arsenic compound and at 2, 4, 7, 10, 14, 17, 21, 24 and 28 days in case of bone destruction and following bone injury and weekly thereafter for a total of 14 weeks in case of bone formation. The errors of the method were determined with error estimators described by the Duinkerke. All radiographs were evaluated by the visual examination after joint evaluation by three dental radiologists and analysed with densitometer. The following results were obtained; 1. Analysis of the bone destruction process 1) The error of the method in estimating two distances proved to be small (S.D. for the measuring error; 0.04㎜, S.D. for the over-all error; 0.06㎜, S.D. for the positioning error; 0.05㎜) 2) The radiographic changes were observed after 7 days in 6 cases, 4 days in 1 case and 10 days in 1 case by the visual examination. 3) Aluminum equivalent values were diminished after 2 days and the diminution of 0.58±0.19㎜ was demanded to be detected by the visual examination. 2. Analysis of the bone formation process 1) The error of the method in estimating two distances proved to be small (S.D. for the measuring error; 0.03㎜, S.D. for the over-all error; 0.04㎜ S.D. for the positioning error; 0.04㎜) 2) The radiographic changes were observed after 2 weeks in 5 cases and 3 weeks in 2 cases by the visual examination. 3) Aluminum equivalent values were increased after 1 week and the increase of 0.45±0.15㎜ was demanded to be detected by the visual examination. 4) Aluminum equivalent values were increased continuously for 7 or 9 weeks but there as only extremely small change after 10 weeks.
Background: Treatment planning the correction of a transverse maxillary occlusal plane cant often involves a degree of qualitative "eyeballing", with the attendant possibility of error in the estimated judgement. A simple chair side technique permits quantification of the extent of asymmetry and thereby quantitative measurements for the correction of the occlusal plane cant. Methods: A measuring instrument may be constructed by soldering the edge of a stainless steel dental ruler at 90° to the flat surface of a similar ruler. With the patient either standing in natural head position, or alternatively seated upright in the dental chair, and a dental photographic retractor in situ, the flat under-surface of the horizontal part of this measuring instrument is placed on a unilateral segment of a bilateral structure, e.g. the higher maxillary canine orthodontic bracket hook. The vertical ruler is held next to the contralateral canine tooth, and the vertical distance measured directly from the canine bracket to the flat under-surface of the horizontal part of the measuring instrument. Results: This vertical distance quantifies the overall extent of movement required to level the maxillary occlusal plane. Conclusions: This measuring instrument and simple chair side technique helps to quantify the overall extent of surgical levelling required and may be a useful additional technique in our clinical diagnostic armamentarium.
Purpose: Demirjian's dental maturity scores and curves have been widely used for human age determination. Several authors have reported considerable differences between the true and estimated age based on the Demirjian curves, which have been accounted for by ethnicity. The purpose of the current study was to assess the role of ethnicity-specific dental maturation curves in age estimation of Saudi children. Materials and Methods: A sample of 452 healthy Saudi children aged 4 to 14 years were aged based on the original French-Canadian Demirjian curves and several modified Demirjian curves specified for certain ethnic groups: Saudi, Kuwaiti, Polish, Dutch, Pakistani, and Belgian. One-way ANOVA and a post hoc Scheff$\acute{e}$'s test were used to assess the differences between chronological age and dental age estimated by the different curves (P<0.05). Results: The curves designed for Dutch, Polish, Saudi, and Belgian (5th percentile) populations had a significantly lower error in estimating age than the original French-Canadian and Belgian (50th percentile) curves. The optimal curve for males was the Saudi one, with a mean absolute difference between estimated age and chronological age of 8.6 months. For females, the optimal curve was the Polish one, with a mean absolute difference of 7.4 months. It was revealed that accurate age determination was not related to certain ethnicity-specific curves. Conclusion: We conclude that ethnicity might play a role in age determination, but not a principal one.
The followings are dealing with 10 dental alloys with less then 30% gold, manufactured by S company 7, and by H company 3. We could find several noticable things by examining them about tarnish and corrosion with human saliva and several other chemicals, and through metal microscopy. 1) After the samples were submerged in human saliva for 3 months, the colour of the samples were no remarkable change. 2) taking a consideration of the error of santorius balance, also there had been little corrosive changes in human saliva. 3) The colour of A-4 was changed into red in 0.05% HCI solution, while that of P-B was changed into black in 0.1% Na₂S solution and severely corroded samples, P-B, X, and Z lost their original colour and turned black. 4) In case of submerging in H₂NO₃reagent, 50%, it caused serious diminishing changes in weight, that is, X 2.7%, Pb 31.0%, Z 40.5%, and there happened tremble corrosive reaction. 5) Seeing them through metal microscopy, we can obserre the corroded samples changed into the shape of.
Purpose: The purpose of this study compared of reproducibility of prepared tooth impression scanning utilized with white and blue light scanners. Methods: To evaluate reproducibility with white and blue light scanners, the impression of premolar were rotated by $10^{\circ}{\sim}20^{\circ}$ and scanned. These data were compared with the first 3-D data (STL file), and the error sizes were measured (n=5). Independent t test was used to evaluation the reproducibility of impression of premolar with white versus blue light scanners through discrepancies of mean, RMS (${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: Discrepancies of mean with regard to reproducibility were $11.2{\mu}m$, $5.8{\mu}m$, respectively, with white and blue light scanners (p<0.047). And discrepancies of RMS with regard to reproducibility were $33.4{\mu}m$, $18.8{\mu}m$, respectively, with white and blue light scanners (p<0.045). Conclusion: Our results indicate a good reproducibility of prepared tooth impression digitized with blue light scanner more than that with white light scanner.
Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study compared to evaluation of repeatability of scanning abutment tooth stone model and impression applied CAD/CAM ISO standard in dentistry. Methods: To evaluate repeatability of scanning abutment tooth stone model, were repeatedly scanned to obtain 11 data via 3D stereolithography (STL) files. 10 data (STL files) were compared with the first 3D data (STL file), and the error sizes were measured by using 3D superimposing software(n=10). Also, the repeatability of scanning abutment tooth impression was evaluated with the same procedure. Independent t test was performed to evaluate the repeatability of scanning abutment tooth stone model versus impression through root mean square(RMS) and standard deviation(SD)(${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: $RMS{\pm}SD$ with regard to repeatability were $14.7{\pm}2.5{\mu}m$, $17.1{\pm}4.0{\mu}m$, respectively, with scanning abutment tooth stone model and impression(p=0.129). Conclusion: This study results showed a little different repeatability of scanning abutment tooth stone model and impression applied CAD/CAM ISO standard in dentistry, will suggest futures good studies and clinical advantages.
Objectives : This research has investigated the reality of the education of the claim and the degree of the education for the claimed of the dentistry recuperation organization in the Daejeon and Chuncheong are for the improvement of the problem in the medical expenses. Methods : It use as a basic data for the vitalizations of the education and performed the survey in the dentistry recuperation organization in the Daejeon and ChungCheong Nam BukDo which are registered in the evaluating organization for judging the health insurance in the present May 2010, and concluded just like the below. Results : 1. The education of the claim in the requirer in the dentistry recuperation organization, and the education of the claim was especially lacking when the dentist was studying in the university, and the dental hygienist had the similar educational experience in the school and the clinic (p<0.05) 2. Most of the requirer in the dental recuperation organization was hoping to get the education related to the claim work, but the dentist and the nurse's aid was relatively low (p<0.05) 3. For fixing the error of the claim, the participation and the extension of the judging standard of the insurance was the highest among the university subordinate dental hospital/dental hospital, but the health center was relatively low (p<0.05). 4. The dentist feels the economic burden in employing the special employee because the raising of the special judging people, compared to others, but the staffs such as the dental hygienist preferred it as one of ways to fix the error of the claim of the dental insurance (p<0.05) 5. Both dentists and the dental hygienist said proper time to teach the insurance was all needed in the school, and the clinic, but other workers relatively believed it should be held in the clinic (p<0.05). 6. The important factors to decide the participation of the lecture was in order of the contents of the lecture, the place of the lecture, the amount for the lecture, the superintendent of the lecture, whether it has gone through the educational score, and whether it has passed the conserving educational score was relatively less important in the university subordinate dentist/dentist, but the medical center was very effective as 4.50 (p<0.05) 7. Health Insurance Review and assessment service was very high as the managing department for supplying the lecture and the information, 70.5%, and the next was the Korean Dental Association/ Korean dental hygiene association, but dentists were preferring the association to manage in than the Health Insurance Review and assessment service to manage (p<0.05) 8. In preferring lecture for the inquiring the insurance, periodontal surgery was the highest as 4.51, the diagnosis standard for injection was high in the university subordinate hospital/dentists, and the more the year of the insurance inquiry, the less the doctor who was hoping for the lecture about the basic treatment. Conclusions : Taken together, it is decided that the inquiry education about the medical expense in the dentist, so the consistent and systematic education should be held to the related people, and from this, it is thought to reduce the problem of the inquiry of the medical expenses by fostering the knowledge and supplying the information which are related to the inquiry of the dentists.
