This study was designed to observe the marginal leakage of three permanent cements affected by three temporary cements. The temporary cements used in this study were Zinc oxide-eugenol, Non-eugenol, and Calcium hydroxide cements and the permanent cements were Zinc phosphate, Polycarboxylate and Alumina reinforced EBA cements. To measure the dye penetration into permanently cemented zone, the experimental specimens were treated with the temporary cements for a week. An analysis of the data obtained from 120 specimens resulted in the following conclusions: 1. Regardless of the types of the permanent cements used, using Calcium hydroxide cement as temporary cement showed higher marginal leakage than other temporary cements. 2. Using Polycarboxylate cement as permanent cement showed less marginal leakage than other permanent cements. 3. The marginal leakage in zinc phosphate cement was similar to Alumina reinforced EBA cement regardless of the types of the temporary cements.
The purpose of this study was to compare the retentive values of various dental cements used for cementing the orthodontic bands on the teeth. Sound freshly extracted human premolar teeth were selected for the study. Eleven commercial dental cements (Zinc phosphate, reinforced Zinc-oxide eugenol, Carboxylate and Glass ionomer cements) were handled under standardized conditions. All cemented speciments were then kept in a thermostatic humidor cabinet regulated at $23{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ and more than $95\%$ relative humidity and tested after 24 hours and 1 week each. The force required to remove the cemented orthodontic bands from the teeth was determined on an Instron Universal Testing Machine using a modified specimen holding device with a cross-head speed of 0.20mm/min. The results obtained were as follows: 1, The retentive values of the band cemented with zinc phosphate cements and carboxylate cements were considerably higher than those of the reinforced zinc oxide-eugenol and glass ionomer cements. 2. There was no significant difference between the retentive value of carboxylate cements as compared with zinc phosphate cements. 3. The retentive value of the reinforced zinc oxide eugenol cements was lowest all of the coements. The retentive values expressed for all cements up to at least one week were highly but no significant difference was found between the 24-hour and 7 day time intervals.
The author measured exothermic temperature of the 5 kinds of zinc phosphate cement and 3 kinds of copper phosphate cement during setting process. Cements were mixed on the glass slab with flexible steel spatula at room temperature (25.8℃) for one minute (spatulating speed was 100 strokes per minute) and placed in the incubator of which temperature was held at 37℃ and thermometer was inserted into the cement mass. The powder liquid ration was 3.0gm:1ml and 1.5gm:1ml. The results were as follows. 1) The heat generated after mixing these cements was under 47.22℃. 2) The range of thermal change of the zinc phosphate cements during setting process was wider than copper phosphate cements. 3) The exothermic temperature from the thin mix was higher than thick mix. 4) The exothermic temperature of the zinc phosphate cements was higher than copper phosphate cements.
The author attempted to study the role of liners as a barrier against the penetration of the acids released from the liquid of dental cements. Six different kinds of liners were used in this study and the depth of penetration of the acids of phosphate and silicate cements were measured ands following conclusions were obtained. 1. All the liners successfully prevented penetration of the acids released from phosphate and silicate cements. 2. When silicate cements were placed into the cavity without any liners, free acids were liberated continuously and thus may give injuries to the pulp tissue.
The experiment consisted of cementing full veneer crown of extracted teeth and a standardized cylindrical metal dies (6mm diameter, 6mm height, 1mm shoulder) and then measuring the tensile strength required to remove the cemented restoratoins by the Instron testing machine in the Korea Institude of Science and Technology. The Instron machine was operated at a rate of loading of 0.2cm per minute. From the experiments, the following results obtained.
1. The tension of zinc phosphate and alumina EBA cements were highest all of the cements.
2. The tension of Fynal and the addition of eugenol to zinc Phosphate cements were similar. The addition of eugenol to zinc phosphate cement was half stength and Fynal cement was on third strength than zinc phosphate cement.
3. The tension of zinc oxide-eugenol cement was lowest all of the cements.
The antimicrobial action of various dental cements evaluated against common micro-organisms most frequenty found within the components of the normal bacterial flora of oral cavity. They include Streptococcus mutans (2 strains), Lactobacillus acidophilus, Actinomyces viscosus, and Streptococcus sanguis. The test was done by the use of brain heart infusion (BHI) agar plates. A standard mix of each cement was made and placed on the plates which were seeded with a standard culture of microorganisms. After incubation, the halo of bacterial growth inhibition around the cement was identified and its size was measured. Some of the cements tested had obvious antibacterial effect. The cements listed in decreasing order of effectiveness are 1) zinc phosphate and oxyphosphate, 2) silicate, 3) zinc oxide-eugenol, 4) calcium hydroxide, and 5) carboxylate.

PURPOSE. In this study, the shear bond strengths (SBS) of luting cements to fixed superstructure metal surfaces under various seating forces were investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Seven different cements [Polycarboxylate (PCC), Glass-Ionomer (GIC), Zinc phospahate (ZPC), Self-adhesive resin (RXU), Resin (C&B), and Temporary cements ((RXT) and (TCS))] were bonded to a total number of 224 square blocks ($5{\times}5{\times}3mm$) made of one pure metal [Titanium (CP Ti) and two metal alloys [Gold-Platinum (Au-Pt) and Cobalt-Chrome (Co-Cr)] under 10 N and 50 N seating forces. SBS values were determined and data were analyzed with 3-way ANOVA. Pairwise comparisons and interactions among groups were analyzed with Tukey's simultaneous confidence intervals. RESULTS. Overall mean scores indicated that Co-Cr showed the highest SBS values ($1.96{\pm}0.4$) (P<.00), while Au-Pt showed the lowest among all metals tested ($1.57{\pm}0.4$) (P<.00). Except for PCC/CP Ti, RXU/CP Ti, and GIC/Au-Pt factor level combinations (P<.00), the cements tested under 10 N seating force showed no significantly higher SBS values when compared to the values of those tested under 50 N seating force (P>.05). The PCC cement showed the highest mean SBS score ($3.59{\pm}0.07$) among all cements tested (P<.00), while the resin-based temporary luting cement RXT showed the lowest ($0.39{\pm}0.07$) (P<.00). CONCLUSION. Polycarboxylate cement provides reliable bonding performance to metal surfaces. Resin-based temporary luting cements can be used when retrievability is needed. GIC is not suitable for permanent cementation of fixed dental prostheses consisting of CP Ti or Au-Pt substructures.
Recently, ceramic materials have become a popular choice for dentists performing esthetic indirect restorations. The longevity and success of ceramic dental restorations depends on the adhesive procedures of resin cements. However, dental ceramics can be classified in various ways, depending on the compositions. Also, the applications for resin cement require multiple clinical steps. Therefore, understanding the different ceramic substrates involved in each procedure, as well as the proper adhesive steps for the resin cements is important to us for long-term clinical success.
Statement of problem : Resin cements were used widely on all ceramic crowns, but the influence of resin cements on biocells was not understood clearly. Purpose : This study was investigated to evaluate the biocompatibility of resin cements for all-ceramic crowns. Material and Method : The resin cements used in this study were Panavia F (Kuraray Co., Ltd. Japan), Variolink II (Vivadent Ets., Schann / Liechtenstein), and Bistite II (Bistite dual cure resin cement-clear Tokuyama Soda Co. Japan). The viability of normal human oral keratocytes, gingival fibroblast, and gingival fibroblast immortalized by Human Papilloma virus 16 was measured in vitro for evaluation of cytotoxicity on resin cements, and the response of pulp tissue was analyzed and evaluated with light microscope after application of cements at cutting edge of incisors. Results : The normal human oral keratocytes was the most sensitive to toxicity of resin cement, and toxicity of cements was higher in Bistite II than in Variolink II. The cell viability of immortalized gingival fibroblast did not affected by type of cement and cultivation period, but there was a tendency that cytotoxicity in Bistite II was higher than in Variolink II. The cell viability of gingival fibroblast was similar to that of immortalized gingival fibroblast regardless of cement type, but Bistite II showed more toxic than others after 5 days cultivation. The responses of pulp tissue according to cement type were similar after 2 days cultivation, but revealed high toxicity in Bistite II after 10 days cultivation. Conclusion : Variolink II was more biocompatible than any other resin cements used in this study.
Objectives: Endodontically treated teeth with insufficient tooth structure are often restored with esthetic restorations. This study evaluated the cytotoxicity and biological effects of yttria partially stabilized zirconia (Y-TZP) blocks in combination with several dental cements. Materials and Methods: Pairs of zirconia cylinders with medium alone or cemented with three types of dental cement including RelyX U200 (3M ESPE), FujiCEM 2 (GC), and Panavia F 2.0 (Kuraray) were incubated in medium for 14 days. The cytotoxicity of each supernatant was determined using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazole- 2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assays on L929 fibroblasts and MC3T3-E1 osteoblasts. The levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) mRNA were evaluated by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and IL-6 protein was evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc tests. A p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The MTT assays showed that MC3T3-E1 osteoblasts were more susceptible to dental cements than L929 fibroblasts. The resin based dental cements increased IL-6 expression in L929 cells, but reduced IL-6 expression in MC3T3-E1 cells. Conclusions: Zirconia alone or blocks cemented with dental cement showed acceptable biocompatibilities. The results showed resin-modified glass-ionomer based cement less produced inflammatory cytokines than other self-adhesive resin-based cements. Furthermore, osteoblasts were more susceptible than fibroblasts to the biological effects of dental cement.
