Purpose: To prevent low bone mineral density (BMD), that is, osteoporosis, in postmenopausal women, it is essential to diagnose osteoporosis more precisely. This study presented an automatic approach utilizing a histogram-based automatic clustering (HAC) algorithm with a support vector machine (SVM) to analyse dental panoramic radiographs (DPRs) and thus improve diagnostic accuracy by identifying postmenopausal women with low BMD or osteoporosis. Materials and Methods: We integrated our newly-proposed histogram-based automatic clustering (HAC) algorithm with our previously-designed computer-aided diagnosis system. The extracted moment-based features (mean, variance, skewness, and kurtosis) of the mandibular cortical width for the radial basis function (RBF) SVM classifier were employed. We also compared the diagnostic efficacy of the SVM model with the back propagation (BP) neural network model. In this study, DPRs and BMD measurements of 100 postmenopausal women patients (aged >50 years), with no previous record of osteoporosis, were randomly selected for inclusion. Results: The accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of the BMD measurements using our HAC-SVM model to identify women with low BMD were 93.0% (88.0%-98.0%), 95.8% (91.9%-99.7%) and 86.6% (79.9%-93.3%), respectively, at the lumbar spine; and 89.0% (82.9%-95.1%), 96.0% (92.2%-99.8%) and 84.0% (76.8%-91.2%), respectively, at the femoral neck. Conclusion: Our experimental results predict that the proposed HAC-SVM model combination applied on DPRs could be useful to assist dentists in early diagnosis and help to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with low BMD and osteoporosis.
Objectives: This pilot study aimed to establish the interrelationship between collagen and mast cells in periapical granulomas and periapical cysts. Materials and Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted on the paraffin-embedded tissue sections of 68 specimens (34 periapical granulomas and 34 periapical cysts). The specimens were stained with picrosirius to observe collagen fiber birefringence and anti-tryptase antibody to evaluate the mast cell count immunohistochemically. The mean number and birefringence of collagen fibers, as well as the mean number of mast cells (total, granulated, and degranulated), and the mean inflammatory cell density were calculated. The data obtained were analyzed using the Kruskal Wallis test, Mann Whitney U test, and Spearman correlation test (p < 0.05). Results: The mean number of thick collagen fibers was higher in periapical cysts, while that of thin fibers was higher in granulomas (p = 0.00). Cysts emitted orange-yellow to red birefringence, whereas periapical granulomas had predominantly green fibers (p = 0.00). The mean inflammatory cell density was comparable in all groups (p = 0.129). The number of total, degranulated, and granulated mast cells exhibited significant results (p = 0.00) in both groups. Thick cyst fibers showed significant inverse correlations with inflammation and degranulated mast cells (p = 0.041, 0.04 respectively). Conclusions: Mast cells and inflammatory cells influenced the nature of collagen fiber formation and its birefringence. This finding may assist in the prediction of the nature, pathogenesis, and biological behavior of periapical lesions.
The purpose of this study was to examine the oral health care aware-ness of pregnant women and their actual oral health care in an effort to provide information on how to assist pregnant women to have the right knowledge on oral health and improve their oral health care. The subjects in this study were pregnant women who used obstetrics and gynecology hospitals or participated in pregnancy/child-rearing programs in the region of P. After a self-administered survey was conducted in July and August 2008, the following findings were given: 1. As for the best case of oral health care, the largest number(77.2%) of the pregnant women investigated brushed all the teeth, gums and tongue when they did toothbrushing. The smallest number of the women(6.8%) spent three minutes or more brushing their teeth. 2. As to dental treatment experience during pregnancy by age, 27.0 percent of the age 26-30 group had ever received dental treatment during pregnancy, which was higher than the rates of the other age groups with the same experience. 3. Regarding the necessity of oral health education geared toward pregnant women, 94.1 percent of the age 26-30 group and 96.3 percent of the group of age 31 and up felt the need for that, which were significantly higher than 72.7 percent of the age 20-25 group who agreed to the necessity of that education. 4. As to connections between oral health status and oral health care, the women who were in good oral health got 6.60 on oral health care. They scored significantly higher than those who were in a moderate state of oral health and who were in bad oral health, as the latter two groups respectively got 5. There was a significant correlation between oral health state and oral health care and between oral health knowledge and oral health care. The better oral health status led to better oral health knowledge, and the better oral health knowledge was followed by better oral health care. 6. As for factors affecting oral health care, oral health knowledge had the largest impact on that, followed by age, oral health status, experience of receiving oral health education for pregnant woman, dental treatment experience during pregnancy, monthly income and stress caused by oral diseases. Given the findings of the study, oral health education should be provided in light of the special physical and mental state of pregnant women. They should be encouraged to receive possible dental treatment during pregnancy if necessary, and they should learn about how to cope with a dental disease in case of develop it.
The purpose of this study was to examine the knowledge of dental hygiene students on smoking and their state of smoking in an attempt to assist dental hygienists to develop good anti-smoking education programs, as dental hygienists should play a critical role in conducting an anti-smoking campaign and education. The subjects in this study were dental hygiene students in six different colleges located in Seoul and Gyeonggi province. After a survey was conducted from April to June, 2007, the answer sheets from 1,322 students were gathered and analyzed. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. As for the reality of smoking, 82.7% were nonsmokers, and 12.2% had been smokers in the past, 5.1% were smokers, which accounted for 5%. Regarding when they started smoking, 47.1% and 35.3% started it in middle school and high school days respectively. So 80% or more began smoking as middle and high schoolers. As to a daily amount of smoking, 36.8% smoked five or less cigarettes, and 22.1% smoked six to 10 cigarettes, 14.7 % smoked 11 to 15 cigarettes. Concerning motivation of smoking, 51.5% did it out of curiosity, and 26.6% intended to get rid of stress. Among the smokers, 80.9% had ever tried to quit smoking, and as for the reason, 51.0 % wanted not to develop a disease in the future, and 25.0% weren't in good health. In regard to what made them fail to give up smoking, 49.0% answered they were increasingly stressed out, and 24.0 % were tempted by others. 2. As to the impact of smoking on the body and illness, the largest group believed it affected unborn babies, and the second largest group was aware of the harmfulness of secondhand smoking. The third largest group thought it exercised an influence on the lung and respiratory ailments, and the fourth largest group believed it was detrimental to health. The fifth greatest group thought tar was harmful to the body. They didn't know well about whether smoking deteriorated the sense of taste, but were well cognizant of the harmfulness of smoking. 3, Their knowledge on the impact of smoking on the body and diseases was evaluated by academic year and in consideration of whether they were smokers or not. And the largest number of them knew the best about smoking's impact on unborn babies and the harmfulness of secondhand smoking, regardless of academic year and whether they were smokers or not. They weren't well aware of its impact on weakening the sense of taste.
In this study, we formulate a new proposal that complements previous classifications in order to assist dental practitioners in performing a differential diagnosis based on patients' radiographs. We used general search engines and specialized databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, PubMed Central, MedLine Plus, Science Direct, Scopus, and well-recognized textbooks to find relevant studies by using keywords such as "jaw disease," "jaw lesions," "radiolucent rim," "radiolucent border," and "radiolucent halo." More than 200 articles were found, of which 70 were broadly relevant to the topic. We ultimately included 50 articles that were closely related to the topic of interest. When the relevant data were compiled, the following eight lesions were identified as having a radiolucent rim: periapical cemento-osseous dysplasia, focal cemento-osseous dysplasia, florid cemento-osseous dysplasia, cemento-ossifying fibroma, osteoid osteoma, osteoblastoma, odontoma, and cementoblastoma. We propose a novel subcategory, jaw lesions with a radiolucent rim, which includes eight entities. The implementation of this new category can help improve the diagnoses that dental practitioners make based on patients' radiographs.

Objectives: The purpose of the study was to assess the occurrence, location, and dimensions of the intraosseous vascular canal in the lateral wall of the maxillary antrum using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, we examined 400 CBCT scans from our archive of patients who had earlier reported to a dental teaching hospital in the United Arab Emirates. The prevalence, location, and dimensions of the lateral antral intraosseous canal (LAIC) in the maxillary antrum were evaluated by 2 examiners using standardised methods. A third examiner was consulted in cases of disagreement. Results: The prevalence of LAIC was 62.3% (249 maxillary antra) among the study population. The mean distance between the most inferior point of the alveolar bone and the inferior border of the LAIC in the posterior maxillary region was 19.83±3.12 mm. There was a significant difference (P=0.05) between the maxillary molar and premolar regions in mean distance from the most inferior point of the alveolar bone and the inferior border of the LAIC. There was no statistically significant difference in mean distance between the most inferior point of the alveolar bone and the inferior border of the LAIC between dentulous and edentulous areas (P=0.1). The G3-intrasinusal type canal less than 1mm in diameter was the most common type of LAIC. Conclusion: This study established the approximate location of the LAIC in a United Arab Emirates cohort, which will assist the oral surgeon in selecting the appropriate site for sinus lift procedures with reduced risk of surgical hemorrhage.

Introduction: This study examined the anatomical morphology of the medial surface of the posterior mandible using 3-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography (CT) images to reduce the number of complications related to dental implant placement. Materials and Methods: Fifty patients were enrolled in this study with an average age (${\pm}$standard deviation) of 44.28 (${\pm}13.05$). On the coronal views cone-beam CT of the first molars, the distance between the top of the canal and alveolar crest vertical distance (VD), the distance between the upper-most point of the canal and the point perpendicular to the lingual cortical margin of the mandible lingual distance (LD), the location of the starting point of VD for reducing from the vertical reference line (VD point), and the inclination of the mandibular medial surface (lingual inclination) were measured, and a statistical evaluation was performed using SPSS for Windows version 15.0. Results: The mean VD0 was $16.91{\pm}2.47\;mm$ and VDx decreased with increasing x value. The mean LD was $5.27{\pm}1.36\;mm$. The VD began to decrease at the mean location of $6.12{\pm}0.96\;mm$ from the vertical reference line. The mean lingual inclination was $1.52{\pm}0.72^{\circ}$. Conclusion: These results will assist in the accurate placement of dental implants and the reduction of complications, particularly in the case of preoperative implant planning using only 2-dimensional imaging methods. Microstructure and phase transformation of Ti-Ni-Cu alloy powders produced by using attrition milling method were studied. Mixed powders of Ti-(50-X)Ni-XCu ($X=0{\sim}20$ at%) in composition range were mechanically alloyed for maximum 20 hours by using SUS 1/4" ball in argon atmosphere. Ball to powder ratio was 50: 1 and impeller speed was 350rpm. Mechanically alloyed with attrition millimg method. powder was heat treated at the temperature up to $850^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in the $10^{-6}$ torr vacuum. Ti-Ni-Cu alloy powders have been fabricated by attrition milling method. and then phase transformation behaviours and microstructual properties of the alloy powders were investigated to assist in improving the the high damping capacity of Ti-Ni-Cu shape memory alloy powders. The results obtained are as follows: 1. After heat treating of fully mechanically alloyed powder at $850^{\circ}C$ for 1hour. most of the B2 and B 19' phases was formed and $TiNi_3$ were coexisted. 2. The B 19' martensite were formed in Ti-Ni-Cu alloy powders whose Cu-content is less than 5a/o. where as the B19 martensite in those whose Cu-content is more than 10at%. 3. The powders of as-milled Ti-Ni-Cu alloys whose Cu-contents is less than 5at% are amorphous. whereas those of as-milled Ti-Ni-Cu alloys whose Cu-content is more than 10at% are crystalline. This means that Cu addition tends to suppress amorphization of Ti-Ni alloy powders.
