The purpose of this study was to classify mandibular dental arch forms based on Raberin's method, and to compare Raberin's arch forms with that of the Korean's, and to designate arch form of bracket level according to distance between cusp tip and buccal surface of bracket level. The sample consisted of 159 mandibular dental casts showing normal occlusion which was taken from 62 males and 97 females of the Korean, aging from 13 to 25 years. The model was taken by X-ray. The landmarks were cusp points which expressed the mandibular dental arch line of cusp tips and buccal points which were measured from cusp tips to buccal surfaces of bracket level. The landmarks on the film were digitized, and measurements and statistics were performed. The results were as follows; 1. The models were classified as type 1, type 2, type 3, type 4 and type 5 by the author, and polynomial functions of the six degree and R-square values were calculated using statistical method, and each calculated equations explained each group with the least R-square value of 0.97, and each arch forms' were plotted. 2. The distribution of type 1 was $17.6\%$, type 2 $20.8\%$, type 3 $20.8\%$, type 4 $16.3\%$ and type 5 $24.5\%$. 3. The Korean arch form was characterized by larger width, smaller height compared to the French arch form. 4. The designated arch form of bracket level, viz the distance between cusp point and buccal point was calculated. The distance between cusp point and buccal point of incisor was 1mm, canine 1.9mm, first premolar 2.5mm, second premolar 2.6mm, first molar 2.7mm and second molar 2.7mm.
This study was based on the study models of 32 subjects with normal occlusion, 40 with Class I malocclusion, 32 with Class II, Division 1 malocclusion and 38 with Class III malocclusion, aged 12 to 20 years (mean age 16.4 years). The purpose of present study was to define the difference between normal and malocclusion groups in maxillary dental arch and palate. On the basis of findings of this study, the following results were obtained. 1. The intermolar widths and the intercanine widths in Class II, Div. 1 malocclusion group were smaller than in normal occlusion group significantly. 2. The arch lengths measured in both Class I and Class II, Div.1 malocclusion groups were larger than in normal occlusion group. 3. The palates in Class I and Class II, Div. 1 malocclusion groups were longer and narrower than in normal occlusion, but the palates in Class III malocclusion group were shorter than in normal occlusion group significantly. 4. The palatal depths measured at level 1 in Class III malocclusion group were significantly higher than in normal occlusion and in Class II, Div. 1 group they were significantly higher than in normal occlusion at level 2 and 3. 5. The measurements of palatal areas at various levels showed no significant difference between malocclusion and normal occlusion groups. 6. The palatal indies 1 (palatal length / palatal width) measured in both Class I and Class II, Div. 1 malocclusion groups were significantly greater than in normal occlusion and the palatal indice 2 (palatal depth at level 1/palatal width) measured in all malocclusion groups are greater than in normal occlusion. 7. It was determined from findings of this study that the measurements of maxillary dental arch and palate were influenced to a considerable extent by the molar relationship.
Objective: This study was performed to investigate buccal facial depth (BFD) changes after extraction and nonextraction orthodontic treatments in post-adolescent and adult female patients, and to explore possible influencing factors. Methods: Twelve and nine female patients were enrolled in the extraction and nonextraction groups, respectively. Changes in BFD in the defined buccal region and six transverse and two coronal measuring planes were measured after registering pretreatment and posttreatment three-dimensional facial scans. Changes in posterior dentoalveolar arch widths were also measured. Treatment duration, changes in body mass index (BMI), and cephalometric variables were compared between the groups. Results: BFD in the buccal region decreased by approximately 1.45 mm in the extraction group, but no significant change was observed in the nonextraction group. In the extraction group, the decrease in BFD was identical between the two coronal measuring planes, whereas this differed among the six transverse measuring planes. Posterior dentoalveolar arch widths decreased in the extraction group, whereas these increased at the second premolar level in the nonextraction group. The treatment duration of the extraction group was twice that of the nonextraction group. No differences were found in BMI and Frankfort horizontal-mandibular plane angle changes between the groups. BFD changes in the buccal region moderately correlated with treatment duration and dental arch width change. Conclusions: BFD decreased in adult female patients undergoing extraction, and this may be influenced by the long treatment duration and constriction of dentoalveolar arch width. However, nonextraction treatment did not significantly alter BFD.
Objective: To evaluate the null hypothesis that there is no difference in a set of clinical predictors of potentially impacted canines between low-risk patients with and without displaced canines. Methods: The normal canine position group consisted of 30 patients with 60 normally erupting canines ranked in sector I (age, 9.30 ± 0.94 years). The displaced canine group comprised 30 patients with 41 potentially impacted canines ranked in sectors II to IV (age, 9.46 ± 0.78 years). Maxillary lateral incisor crown angulation, inclination, rotation, width, height, and shape, as well as palatal depth, arch length, width, and perimeter composed a set of clinical predictors, which were evaluated on digital dental casts. Statistical analyses consisted of group comparisons and variable correlations (p < 0.05). Results: There was a significant association between sex and mesially displaced canines. Unilateral canine displacement was more prevalent than bilateral displacement. The crown of the maxillary lateral incisors was significantly angulated more mesially and rotated mesiolabially in low-risk patients with displaced canines, who also had a shallower palate and shorter anterior dental arch length. Lateral incisor crown angulation and rotation, as well as palatal depth and arch length, were significantly correlated with the canine displacement severity. Conclusions: The null hypothesis was rejected. Maxillary lateral incisor angulation inconsistent with the "ugly duckling" stage as well as a shallow palate and short arch length are clinical predictors that can significantly contribute to the early screening of ectopic canines in low-risk patients.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate validity, reliability and reproducibility of tooth width (TW), arch length (AL) and arch length discrepancy (ALD) measured on a digital model taken via 3-dimensional model scanner and intraoral scanner compared to a plaster model. A total of 30 patients aged 12 to 18 were eligible for the study. 3 types of models were acquired from each patient: a conventional plaster model (P), a model scanned digital model (MSD) taken via Freedom UHD® and an intraoral scanned digital model (ISD) taken via CS3600® in-vivo. The reliability of TW and AL in each group was evaluated using Pearson's correlation coefficient, while the reproducibility was evaluated with intraclass correlation coefficient. The validity of space analysis was assessed by paired t-test. As a result, all measurements of P, MSD and ISD groups showed favorable reliability and reproducibility. Most of measurements for space analysis in MSD group and TW in ISD group also presented high validity. AL and ALD presented statistically significant difference between P and ISD group. The validity of measurements of space analysis in ISD group was short in doubt to valid, but clinically acceptable. Both MSD and ISD are clinically acceptable to use for space analysis but clinician should be aware that errors can be found using a digital model.
The aim of this study was to establish normative data on the tooth size and arch parameters of Koreans with normal occlusion, This study employed the dental casts of 296 (male: 179; female 117) normal occlusion samples, who were selected from 15,836 adults through a community dental health survey. The mesiodistal diameters of teeth, arch width, and arch length were measured by digital electronic calipers(accurate to 0.01 mm) and Bolton's indices as well as intermaxillary arch width ratios were calculated. In order to ensure reliability, intra- and inter-examiner error were evaluated. Although our dimensional data showed overt differences between genders, the indices and intermaxillary ratios evaluated were the same. The resultant data obtained were compared with the previous data to reveal whether any changes have occurred over the time. The clinical implication of the present findings was also discussed. This biometric study seemed to provide a clinically applicable diagnostic criteria for an individual malocclusion patient.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between inter-condylar width and inter-maxillary first molar width to present the criteria for prosthetic reconstruction of dental arch width in maxillary and mandibular fully edentulous patients. Materials and Methods: 120 Koreans (60 males and 60 females) who underwent the cone beam computerized tomography (Cone-beam CT) were selected. The Cone-beam CT images were analysed using Invivo 5.1. After reorientation of axis, inter-maxillary first molar width was measured by clicking both mesio-buccal cusp tip of maxillary first molar. And inter-condylar width was measured by clicking both middle points of condyles. The collected data were analysed with SPSS Version 20.0 and statistical significance of the correlation between inter-condylar width and inter-maxillary first molar width was verified by Pearson's correlation analysis. Results: The mean inter-condylar width of Korean was 105.9 mm, and that of male (108.3 mm) was statistically significantly wider than the female (103.4 mm). The inter-maxillary first molar width of Korean was 57.1 mm, and that of male (57.9 mm) was statistically significantly wider than the female (56.2 mm). Pearson's correlation analysis between inter-condylar width and inter-maxillary first molar width showed a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.614 and statistically significantly positive correlation. Conclusion: Intercondylar width and inter-maxillary first molar width showed positive correlation and the average ratio of inter-condylar with and inter-maxillary first molar width was 1:0.54. Based on the results of this limited study, inter-condylar width can be used as a guide for setting up dental arch width in fully edentulous patient.
The Purpose of this study was to estimate relative importance among the causative factors o( arch length discrepancy(ALD) and Possibility of prediction of the ALD in the mixed dentition. The sample consisted of the casts of the 142 young adults who had no abnormal muscle function, no skeletal abnormalities and Class I molar relationship. We classified the sample by gender and the extent of ALD, and measured mesiodistal diameters of each tooth and the dimensions of the dental arch. The computerized statistical analyses was carried out with SPSS win program. The results were as follows ; 1. Most of the variables of spacing group and some variables of dental arch dimension of crowding group were significantly different between genders. But in normal group, there were few differences. 2. In male crowding and female spacing group, mainly measurements of tooth dimension were significantly different from those of normal group. 3. In male spacing and female crowding group, measurements of dental arch dimension were significantly different from those of normal group. 4. The measurements of dimension of dental arch were highly correlated with ALD in correlation analysis and factor analysis. 5. Prediction equations for adult's ALDs by means of what can be measured in the mixed dentition(mesiodistal dimensions of incisors and first molar, intermolar width and arch length) showed R square from $63\%$ to $80\%$.
It has been generally believed that the impaction or eruption of mandibular third molars has significant correlations with the growth of the mandible, size of mandibular arch and size of teeth. The purpose of this study was to examine if there is any correlation between the status of eruption of mandibular third molars and the amount of mandibular crowding. The effect of missing of third moalrs to mandibular crowding was studied as well. 140 adult students of Yonsei University were selected and divided into three groups according to the status of mandibular third molars, Group 1) congenital missing group, Group 2) eruption group, and Group 3) impaction group. The tooth size, dimensions of the mandibular dental arch, and the amount of crowding were measured and compared. Results were as follows ; 1. There was no statistically significant difference in tooth size between the missing group and the eruption group(p<0.05). Impaction group showed larger total tooth material, inci- sal tooth material, and individual tooth size except central incisors compared to missing group (p<0.05). Impaction group showed larger total tooth material, incisal tooth material compared to eruption group as well(p<0.05). When individual tooth size was compared, impaction group had larger central incisors, canines, and second premolars than eruption group(p<0.05). 2. Missing group showed larger intermolar width than impaction group and it was stati- stically significant(p<0.05). 3. When compared the amount of total crowding, impaction group showed the largest am- ount of crowding, then eruption group, and missing group showed the least amount of crowding respectively(p<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between missing stoup and eruption group in the amount of incisal crowding(p<0.05). Impaction group show- ed the largest amount of incisal crowding among all three groups(p<0.05).
This study was undertaken to determine the relapse amount in the various malocclusions and correlative coefficient with other factors. The sample were consisted of 60 orthodontic patients whose models were perfect before treatment, after treatment and after 6 months post treatment. For this study 8 liner lengths were measured in maxilla and mandible respectively. The results were as follows. 1. The change with treatment of maxillary dental arch length was most large in non extraction group of Angle's class II malocclusion. 2. The relapse compared with other treatment changes was most little in the arch perimeter. 3. The relapse was increased in proportion to the beginning age of the treatment in non extraction group. 4. The relapse of maxillary intermolar width was increased and those of overbite & molar relationship were decreased in proportion to the duration of active treatment. 5. The relapse of maxillary intercanine width was increased with a time goes after treatment.
