Hardening behavior and metal-mold reaction of phosphate bonded investments for titanium and titanium alloys were investigated. Alumina and $Y_2O_3-stabilized$ zirconia, which are thermodynamically more stable than Titania, were used as major filler materials. $NH_4H_2PO_4$ was used as binder, and MgO was used as hardening acceleration material. A different composition ratio of binder and hardening acceleration material had effected on general hardening behavior and castings. And adding $YO_3-stabilized$ zirconia to alumina, metal-mold reaction characteristics for castings was evaluated. Considering working conditions and effects on castings, the best composition ratio conditions were both 10:10 and 12:8($NH_4H_2PO_4vs.\;MgO$). On the other hand, increasing the contents of $Y_2O_3-stabilized$ zirconia for filler material, metal-mold reaction layer of titanium castings was greatly decreased.
Ti-6Al-4V alloys are mainly used as dental materials due to their excellent biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, and chemical stability. However, they have a low bioactivity with bioinertness in the body. Therefore, they could not directly bond with human bone. To improve their applications, their bone bonding ability and bone formation capacity should be improved. Thus, the objective of this study was to improve the bioinert surface of titanium alloy substrate to show bioactive characteristics by performing surface modification using wollastonite powder. Commercial bioactive wollastonite powder was successfully deposited onto Ti-6Al-4V alloy using a room temperature spray process. It was found that wollastonite-coated layer showed homogeneous microstructure and uniform thickness. Corrosion resistance of Ti-6Al-4V alloy was also improved by plasma electrolytic oxidation treatment. Its wettability and bioactivity were also greatly increased by wollastonite coating. Results of this study indicate that both plasma electrolytic oxidation treatment and wollastonite coating by room temperature spray process could be used to improve surface bioactivity of Ti-6Al-4V alloy substrate.
Titanium and its alloys are widely used as dental implants materials because of their excellent mechanical properties. However, the alumina and zirconia ceramics are preferred to use as the substitute of Ti implants because there is a problems in esthetics and biocompatibility in Ti implant. The the glass infiltrated alumina ceramics are studied to increase the toughness and biocompatibility. The 45S5 and soda-lime glass powder was mixed with ethanol at ratio of 1:1 and brushed on the surface of alumina. Then it was heat treated in the electric furnace at $1400^{\circ}C$ from 30 min. to 5 hours. The glass powder was controlled from 200 to $350{\mu}m$ using ball milling. After heat treatment, the glass infiltrated specimen was tested in universal testing machine to measure the bending strength. The surface microstructure of each specimen was observed with SEM. The biocompatibility of 45S5 and soda-lime glass coated alumina was investigated using PBS at $36.5^{\circ}C$ incubator. The specimen was immersed in PBS for 3, 5, 7, 10 days. After that, the surface morphology was investigated with SEM. As the results of experiment, the 45S5 bioglass infiltrated alumina show the increase of bending strength according to the increasing of heat treatment time from 30 min. to 5 hours at $1400^{\circ}C$ Finally the 1370N bending strength of alumina increased to 1958N at 5 hours heat treatment, which shows 1.4 times higher. In contrast to this, the soda lime glass infiltrated alumina ceramics shows the convex curve according to heat treatment time. Thus it shows maximum bending strength of 1820N at 1 hour heat treatment of $1400^{\circ}C$ It gives 1.3 times higher. However, the bending strength of soda lime glass infiltrated alumina is decreasing with increasing heat treatment time after 1 hour. The precipitation on the surface of 45S5 glass infiltrated alumina was revealed as a sodium phosphate ($Na_{6}P_{6}O_{24}6H_{2}O$) and the amount of precipitation is increasing with increasing of immersion time in PBS. In contrast to this, there is no precipitation are observed on the surface of soda lime glass infiltrated alumina. This implies that 45S5 glass infiltrated alumina brings more biocompatible when it is implanted in human body.

Surface treatment play an important role in nucleating calcium phosphate deposition on surgical Ti implant. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine whether the precipitation of apatite on cp-Ti and Ti alloys are affected by surface modification in HCl and $H_2O_2$ solution. Specimens were then chemically treated with a solution containing 0.1 M HCl and 8.8M $H_2O_2$ at $80^{\circ}C$ for 30 mins, and subsequently heat-treated at $400^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. All specimens were immersed in the HBSS with pH 7.4 at $36.5^{\circ}C$ for 15 days, and the surface was examined with XRD, SEM, EDX ana XPS. Also, pure Ti, Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy specimens with and without surface treatment were implanted in the abdominal connective tissue of mice for 4 weeks. All specimens chemically treated with HCl and $H_2O_2$ solution have the ability to form a apatite layer in the HBSS which has inorganic ion composition similar to human blood plasma. The average thickness of the fibrous capsule surrounding the specimens implanted in the connective tissue was $38.57\;{\mu}m,\;62.27\;{\mu}m\;and\;45.64\;{\mu}m$ in the cp-Ti, Ti-6Al-4V ana Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy specimens with the chemical treatment respectively, and $52.20\;{\mu}m,\;75.62\;{\mu}m\;and\;66.56\;{\mu}m$ in the commercial specimens of cp-Ti, Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-6Al-7Nb without any treatment respectively. The results of this evaluation indicate that the chemically treated cp-Ti, Ti-6Al-4V ana Ti-6Al-7Nb alloys have better bioactivity and biocompatibility compared to the other metals tested.
Ni-Cr and Co-Cr alloy uncontained Be element for using as dental porcelain alloy were analyzed the mechanical properties through bonding strength and fracture test after the bonding with porcelain. The bonding strengths between alloy and ceramic were measured through the shear bond strength test. Consequently, the T-3 group contained Be element that had shear strength of 41.13(${\pm}5.11$)MPa was showed the highest shear strength than the other groups. The second highest group was a verabond contained Be element that had shear strength of 40.72(${\pm}5.98$)MPa. The results of the other groups according to the shear strength were Wirobond(38.40(${\pm}9.66$)MPa) belonged to Co-Cr alloy, and Verabond 2V(32.77(${\pm}4.31$)MPa), Bellabond N(28.63(${\pm}6.39$)MPa), Bellabond plus(24.97(${\pm}6.13$)MPa), Argeloy N.P. Star(22.69(${\pm}3.41$)MPa) uncontained Be element, respectively. The morphological aspects of the fracture surface between alloys and ceramic were observed that all groups were caused mixed failure as conformation attached ceramic fragments to metallic surface by fracture process.

Purpose: Ti-6Al-4V alloy is widely used as an implant material because of its good biocompatibility and good mechanical property compared with commercial pure titanium. Otherwise, toxicity of aluminum and vanadium in vivo has been reported. Ti-8Ta-3Nb alloy is recently developed in the R&D Center for Ti and Special Alloys and it was reported that this alloy has high mechanical strength, no cytotoxicity and similar biocompatibility to commercial pure titanium, but many studies are needed for its clinical use. In these experiment, we carried out different surface treatment on each Ti-8Ta-3Nb alloy disks, then cultured cell on it and assessed biological response. Materials and Methods: cpTi, Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-8Ta-3Nb alloy disks were prepared and carried out sandblasting and acid etching (SLA) or alkali-heat treatment (AH) on the Ti-8Ta-3Nb alloy disks. We cultured primary rat calvarial cells on each surface and assessed early cell attachment and proliferation by scanning electron microscopy, cell proliferation, alkaline phosphatase activity. Result: The rates of cell proliferation on the cpTi, Ti-8Ta-3Nb AH disks were higher than others (p<0.05) and alkaline phosphatase activity was significantly enhanced on the Ti-STa-8Nb AH disks(p<0.05). Conclusion: Most favorable cell response was shown on the Ti-8Ta-3Nb AH surfaces. It is supposed that alkali-heat treatment of the Ti-8Ta-3Nb alloy could be induced earlier bone healing and osseointegration than smooth surface.

In the present study, we investigated the formation of self-organized nanostructure oxide layers on CP Ti and Ti-10Ta-10Nb alloy in an electrolyte of 1M phosphoric acid and 1.5 wt% Hydrofluoric acid. The morphology of oxide film on substrate was observed using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy The surface roughness of titanium oxide film was analyzed by atomic force microscopy and the crystalline of specimen was investigated using X-ray diffractometer. The results of this study showed that well-aligned titanium oxide nanotubes are formed with diameter of approx. 100nm and length of approx. 500nm with CP Ti. However, it is clear that TiTaNb alloy highly irregular structure with various diameters. Transmission electron microscope investigations show that the specimens were confirmed as amorphous. Such titanium oxide nanotubes are expected a well-adhered bioacitive surface layer on titanium substrate for orthopedics and dental implants.
