Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the eating behavior of patients in a bid to facilitate the improvement of their eating behavior, as eating behavior seemed to affect oral health and dietary habits. Methods : The subjects in this study were 235 patients who visited the dental hygiene practice lab at C college in South Jeonla Province. After a survey was conducted, the collected data were analyzed with the statistical package SPSS 12.0. Results : 1. When their self-awareness of dietary habits and oral health was checked in consideration of eating behavior, those who thought they had very good dietary habits and were in good oral health had meals three times a day. Their eating time was very irregular, and they took 15 to 20 minutes to eat. Their overeating frequency was three or four times a week, and their frequency of eating between meals was once or twice a week. 2. On the contrary, the daily eating frequency of the patients who found themselves to have very bad dietary habits and to be in bad oral health was not fixed, and their eating time was neither regular nor irregular. They spent less than 10 minutes having a meal, and their overeating frequency was once or twice a week. Their frequency of having a snack was three or four times a week, and as for food preference, they had a liking for meat. 3. The patients considered themselves to be in better health when they had balanced meals and good eating behavior, namely good dietary habits. And they rated their own dietary habits higher when they were in a good oral state, had no experiences to feel pain in the mouth and didn't receive any dental treatment, namely when they were in good oral health. Conclusions : This study attempted to investigate the influence of eating behavior on oral health awareness. Another limitation of this study is that the geographic scope was just confined to an urban community in South Jeonla Province without checking any possible regional gaps. However, it's quite evident that eating behavior exerts an influence on oral health awareness, and it seems worth doing to examine a larger number of subjects by utilizing objective oral health guidelines.
Introduction The aim of this study, personal trait and their dental care based on experience level of dental fear is to analyze the differences. Catastrophizing is an irrational belief that something is far worse than it actually is. Because it makes it possible to analyze patients' anxious thoughts and tendencies. Methods The Dental Fear Survey(DFS) and Anxious Thoughts and Tendencies(AT&T) were used as measuring tools, and the independent sample t-test and ANOVA were performed on the basis of the mean value of the summated scale scores and the standard deviation. On the factors to dental anxiety, the multiple regression analysis was performed. Results Demographically, the total DFS score was higher in women($25.73{\pm}8.27$) than in men. Also, AT&T was higher in women($31.01{\pm}7.05$) (p<0.05). Dental fear was intense in the group of patients who visited dental clinics only problems($25.29{\pm}8.57$) than in those regular visited($22.29{\pm}7.78$). In relation to dental experiences, the DFS score was significantly higher in children. In many cases, patients experienced therapeutic pains in children($26.40{\pm}9.54$) (p=0.004). Also in many patients, dental anxiety began to occur in adolescence(44.3%). The multiple regression analysis result, it was found that dental treatment pain and their AT&T wielded great influence upon dental fear.

Background: Osteoradionecrosis is a delayed complication from radiation therapy which causes chronic pain, infection and constant deformity after necrosis. Most of the osteoradionecrosis occurs spontaneously or after the primary oncologic surgery, dental extraction or by trauma of prosthesis. The treatment of osteoradionecrosis relies on both conservative measures and surgical measures. The fibular osteocutaneous free flap has become more popular choice for reconstruction of maxillofacial defects as a treatment of osteoradionecrosis. Methods: We presented our experiences from 7 patients with osteoradionecrosis who have had reconstruction surgery with fibular osteocutaneous free flap at National Cancer Center during the recent 5 years. We performed segmental mandibular resection with fibular osteocutaneous free flap for all 7 patients of advanced osteoradionecrosis who were not controlled by conservative treatment such as wound irrigation, debridement, and antibiotics. Results: A wide range of techniques were available for the reconstruction of composite defects resulted from the treatment of advanced mandibular osteoradionecrosis. Significant improvement was noted in relieving pain and treating trismus after the surgery however difficulty in swallowing and xerostomia showed less improvement. Conclusions: We concluded that fibular osteocutaneous free flap can be performed safely in patients with osteoradionecrosis and yields positive outcomes with significantly increased success rate. The fibular osteocutaneous free flap was our preferred choice for the mandibular reconstruction due to its versatility and predictability.

In the brain of epilepsy patients, sudden and unusually intense bursts of electrical charges are occurred repeatedly. So, epilepsy patient experiences seizure. Seizure shows various frequency and precipitating factor and has a prodrome. Also, epilepsy patient present various behavior pattern during seizure. If the biting injury occurred during seizure, there would be pain, infection, defect of soft tissue and esthetic problem. The dental management of self-mutilation includes preserve methods of using appliances such as lip bumper or soft mouth guard and radical methods such as extraction of all teeth or orthognathic surgery. A case of epilepsy patient with self-mutilation of mento-labial sulcus is presented. She was treated successfully with soft mouth guard.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine if self-rated oral health differed according to self-reported oral health behaviors in Korean adolescents. Methods: The raw data of 'The 6th Youth Health Behavior Online Survey' carried out by the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention were analysed. Independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Logistic regression analysis were used to assess the relationships between oral health behaviors and self-rated oral health (n=73,238). Results:Oral health behaviors had stronger influence on daily toothbrushing habits. In particular, participants who brushed their teeth in the morning and participants who brushed their teeth more than 3 times a day were more likely to have good self-rated oral (P<0.001). Conclusions: Korean adolescents with high self-rated oral health reported practicing good oral health behaviors. These results highlight the need for the further practicable oral health education programs.

Electrosurgical technique have been used in dentistry as an aid to soft tissue management for nearly 60 years. However, it was not until the late 1960s that the principles of electrosurgery were understood and improved equipment became available. Electrosurgery is a surgical procedure performed on soft tissue utilizing controlled high frequency electricaI(radio-frequency) currents in the range of 1,500,000 to 7,500,000 cyclesper second. The radio-frequency energy used in electrosurgery is able to cut and coagulate tissue because it focuses the energy at the small, active electrode. Advantages of electrosurgery for soft-tissue management during dental procedures include improved hemostasis, ease of tissue modification, improved visibility and so on, but adverse healing responses-including necrosis of soft tissue and sequestration of alveolar bone-have been reported. The present report provides examples of treatment of soft tissue and pulp tissue of primary teeth by electrosurgery. The results are as follows; 1. Electrosurgical techniques can be used for various procedures in pedodontics. 2. Electrosurgical procedures provide improved hemostasis and visibility in the operating field, which enable to remove, reshape, and contour soft tissues easily. 3. In pulpotomy technique, it was difficult to expect the variable pulpal response based on the degree of heat accumulation and the conditions of pulp tissues. Therefore, electrosurgical pulpotomy could not be considered as a method superior to formocresol pulpotomy. 4. A greater degree of dexterity and experiences in manipulation of the electrode is required compared with the conventional scalpel surgery.
The purpose of this study was to examine dental personnels' concern for health, their personal protection manner, and whether or not they were inoculated against hepatitis B and made an inquiry of patients about that. It's ultimately meant to serve as a basis for the preparation of an anti-infection guide for the protection of dental personnels against all sorts of infectious diseases. After a survey was conducted from March 29 through May 9, 2001, the following findings were obtained: (1) The dental personnel group that had worked for 5 to less than 7 years took health examination the most, with 71.4%, before joining the hospital, and 61.5% of those who had served for 9 years or more, the greatest percentage, took medical checkup after joining the hospital(P<0.05). (2) The largest percentage of being inoculated against the anti-B type hepatitis after employment was 71.4% of the dental personnels over 35, and 57.7% of those with 9-year or more working experiences. Therefore, their age and service term made a significant difference(P<0.05). (3) There was no significant gap in personal protection practices between the dental hygienists and nurse aids(P>0.05). But the use of safety goggles for treatment was not properly done, with just 1.48 on the basis of 3 points, whereas the use of mask was scored 2.40 and the use of gloves was scored 1.96. (4) After a narcotic was used once, the leftovers were wasted by 89.7% of the dental hygienists and 70.0% of the nurse aids. More dental hygienists wasted them(P<0.05). (5) For hand washing, antibiotic liquid soap was used by 19.3% of the dental hygienists and 10.0% of the nurse aids, which were both very low percentage. And just 37.2% of the dental hygienists utilized a disposable paper towel to dry their hands, and only 36.0% of the nurse aids used the same(P<0.05).

Surgical process of oral and maxillofacial area as well as dental treatment are stressful situations to the patients. It is well known that serum level of stress hormones including adrenocorticotropic hormone(ACTH) and cortisol increase when the body is exposed to stress. However, there have been few studies on demographic and clinical factors related with stress. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to supply data to cope with stress more comprehensively and efficiently by analyzing the effect of factors related with stress in addition to surgical procedure. Prospective cohort study method was selected. Serum levels of ACTH and cortisol were measured by sampling bloods pre-operatively and post-operatively from 45 patients who had been operated at the Bundang Jesaeng Hospital department of oral and maxillofacial surgery. To evaluate factors associated with stress, patients were classified according to gender, age, method of payment(insurance or self), experiences of operation, kind of operations(expected operations or unexpected operations). Relative risk was calculated to assess relationships between changes of serum level of ACTH and cortisol and factors related with stress, whereas Chi-square analysis was executed to evaluate statistical significance. With regard to serum level of ACTH, relative risk was 1.3 in the group of the patients who were less than 40 years old. With regard to serum level of cortisol, relative risk was 1.8 for women compared with men, 1.4 in the group of the patients who were less than 40 years old and 1.6 in the group of the patients who had not experienced any other operations. In addition to surgical procedure, factors related with stress included gender, age, method of payments, experiences of operation and kind of operations. Therefore, we should provide comprehensive schemes to reduce stress of the patients going through oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Purpose: The aim of the present investigation was to understand the incidence, prevalence of denture stomatitis in denture wearers, who were over 60 years old, and use the results for a fundamental data to promote public awareness about denture stomatitis and its education tools. Materials and methods: From August 21 to September 8 2017, 500 denture wearers, who were more than 60 years old in Seoul and 4 other metropolitan cities (Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, and Daejeon), received questionnaires. The questionnaires included denture wearers' demographic distributions, specific dental treatment experiences, discomforts with current dentures, their oral health conditions, and the method of denture cleansing. Results: Thirty-two percent of 500 denture wearers responded that they have healthy oral conditions. Two hundred and eight respondents (41.6%) were aware of denture stomatitis. Only 131 (26.2%) were informed about the removable denture covered by national health insurance and 327 (65.4%) of denture wearers were using the improper denture cleansing methods. Conclusion: A large number of denture wearers still do not recognize the importance of proper treatment for denture stomatitis, insurance covered denture treatments, and adequate denture cleansing methods.
This study aims to analyze the relevance between oral health practices and oral discomforts of the elderly in an urban-rural area by surveying the elderly in welfare centers for the Elderly-continued oral health care program. The result shows that the elderly brush their teeth under regular oral care, and practice oral health life by scaling for the prevention of periodontal disease. Most of the elderly who drink alcohol have experienced implant care and tend to quit drinking after the treatment, and seemed to get their oral discomfort relieved. However, no relevance is found between implant experiences and social discomfort. Furthermore, the elderly who had bad breath expressed pronunciation, taste, pain and chewing discomfort, and social discomfort (P>.05). The educational level of the elderly did not have an impact on oral discomfort, but smoking, chewing and bad breath discomfort seemed to be related to social discomfort(P>.05). Therefore, since oral discomfort of the elderly causes social discomfort which decreases their quality of living, we recommend oral health departments of local governments to help the elderly maintain happy lives by continuing to study the practical use of reducing oral discomfort.
