Background: The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the oral health conditions of Autism Spectrum Disease (ASD) and cerebral palsy(CP) patients visiting the Kyung Hee University Dental Hospital from January 2003 to december 2010. Methods: This study analyzed the data (patient's chart and radiograph) of fifty-eight ASD patients and fifty-seven CP patients. The oral health conditions of patients were surveyed by DMFT (dmft) and periodontal condition at the first visit. The performed dental procedure, behavior management methods and follow-up check were analyzed. Results: The average age of patients having ASD and CP was 12 year 2 month (ASD; 11 year 9 month and CP; 12 year 4 month). Within the limit of this study, the rate of dental caries was higher in CP patients than autism patients. Both of diseases showed the periodontal problem. Autistic patients showed more difficult management problems according to the rate of general anesthesia experiences. Conclusions: This article would contribute for dental practitioners to provide appropriate and specialized treatment to ASD patients and CP patients.
Objectives : This research aims to analyze the relationship between the state of mental illness and oral health management of mental patients in mental health care institutions. Methods : The data were randomly selected from 474 patients in mental health care institutions. and analyzed by SPSS WIN 12.0 program. Results : Schizophrenia accounted for 79.5%(337 patients) ; alcohol dependency, 5.3%(25 patients) ; mental retardation, 2.7%(13 patients) ; mental development disorder, 3.0%(14 patients) ; mental delusion and dementia, 7.6%(36 patients). Those who were in 40s had the highest dental caries of 3.95 and the highest remaining teeth of 26.76 were shown in the 20s. The correlation between remaining teeth and mental retardation was the highest, measuring 22.38(p<.05). Those who were in 70s had the serious periodontal condition that accounted for 41.3%(12 patients)(p<.05). The correlation coefficient for all factors-dental caries, remaining teeth, need for scaling, and periodontal condition-between mental illness condition and oral health were all positive(p <.05). The regression analysis resulted in the formula Y(mental health condition)=2.999+0.166(dental aries)-0.028(remaining teeth). Conclusions : Those who had mental illness had very poor and serious dental caries and periodontal diseases, so it is necessary to manage the dental health care for the mentally ill patients.
Objectives: This study was performed to emphasize improvement of the perception of dental hygienists' environmental working conditions by analyzing various factors. Methods: Two hundred ninety-eight female dental hygienists working at 35 medical institutions in Daegu City and Gyeongsangbuk-do Province participated. A self-recording type survey was done in October 2016. Results: Factors influencing the perception of infection control was length of career. Dental hygienists with more experience have a higher level of perception. Factors influencing the perception of working posture was the number of patients per day and career level. Dental hygienists seeing 50 or fewer patients per day and senior staff showed higher levels of this perception. Factors influencing the perception of noise in the working area were length of career and lunchtime break. The perception level was high in the group with longer careers and dental hygienists who rest at lunch time. Factors influencing chemical exposure during work were the number of patients per day and the type of institute. Dental hygienists working in dental clinics or dealing with more patients had lower levels of perception. Conclusions: The sociodemographic and working characteristics of dental hygienists influence the perception of dental hygienists' environmental working conditions.

Background: Sedation or outpatient general anesthesia is a necessary method for a successful dental treatment for children and the disabled who have a difficulty of cooperation. The aim of this study was to assess the patients who had dental treatment under sedation or outpatient general anesthesia at department of pediatric dentistry, Chonnam national university dental hospital and Gwangju dental clinic for the disabled. In case of sedation, the proportion of male patients was higher and 4-6 years age group was the highest. Most patients have resided in Gwangju buk-gu and the percentage of restorative treatment was the highest. In case of outpatient general anesthesia, the proportion of male patients was higher than that of sedation. Two groups, 10-19 and 20-29 years age, consisted most of patient. Most patients have resided in Gwangju buk-gu and Jeollanam-do, and the percentage of periodontic and preventive treatment was the highest. Conclusions: Sedation or outpatient general anesthesia for dental treatment has been increasing for children and the disabled who have a difficulty of cooperation. Therefore, it is important to improve treatment environment under sedation and general anesthesia through continuous research and studies.
Posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD) is a psychiatric illness that results from exposure to serious threats of injury or death. In addition, dental phobia, which is suggested as a sub-threshold form of PTSD, may result from aversive or painful dental treatment. Patients with PTSD may present greater dental and behavioral challenges than other patients due to their mental illness, neglect of oral hygiene, and their medication. Dentists have to consider the challenges to provide these patients with proper dental treatment.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to compare the oral health related characteristics between a long-term patients and general population. Methods: A direct interview questionnaire was completed by 160 patients and 165 general people from January 16 to April 31, 2014. Current trend of aging society suggests that many patients are at risk for various preoperative preparations and postoperative complications during and following invasive dental procedures, due to an acquired medically compromised conditions from systemic disease and/or from medications. The medical history is critical for the identification of patients potentially at risk for medically compromised and old aged patients' factors from dental treatment. The proper dental management requires an understanding of certain principles of pathophysiology for these medical conditions and some standard laboratory tests. Polypharmacy in old age, besides representing a risk in and of itself, points to the potential risk the underlying diseases that necessitated the drugs can present in the dental office. These diseases and medications can also present a risk to oral health. A sequence for categorizing drugs in a medication list is presented here to aid in the identification of potential risks in the dental treatment and management of patients with complex medical histories and drug regimens. Specific patient populations, such as pediatric, may have specific drugs or additional criteria that need to be considered. Practitioners must use the health history and the medication list in concert, using one to make sense of the other and utilizing all the information available from reviewing each one carefully in order to manage their increasingly complex patients safely and effectively.
Objectives : The purpose of the study was to investigate the overall research trend and change in dental fear during 9 years(2004-2012) and to identify the major outcomes and future directions to research.
