The purpose of this study is to investigate the determinants of the occupational commitment of dental hygienists in Korea. The independent variables contain three groups of work rewards variables which consist of task reward variables (autonomy, job significance, resource adequacy, role conflict, workload, and routinization), social reward variables(supervisory support, co-worker support, and negative affectivity), and organizational reward variables(job security and promotional chances), and eight sociodemographic variables. The sample of this study consisted of 474 dental hygienists who work at general hospitals, university hospitals, dental hospitals and clinics across the nation. Data were collected with self-administered questionnaires and analyzed using hierarchical regression technique. It was found that: (1) job significance have a significant positive effect on the occupational commitment of dental hygienists; (2) role conflict, workload, routinization, and type of work site have significant negative effect on the occupational commitment of dental hygienists; (3) the study model explains 23.7% of the variance in occupational commitment among dental hygienists. The results of the study indicate that managers of dental clinics and hospitals should make efforts to extend the scope and quality of dental hygienists' work through job enlargement and job enrichment.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine influential factors related to hand washing practice in dental hygienists by health belief model, one of the major predictors of health behavior including perceived susceptibility, perceived seriousness, perceived benefits, perceived barriers and cues to action. Methods : The subjects were dental hygienists in dental hospitals, dental clinics, general hospitals and university hospitals in Seoul. A survey was conducted from May 1 to September 30, 2011. Results : Analysis of health belief of dental hygienists in hand washing, they revealed the highest marks of 4.39 to perceived benefits, followed by perceived susceptibility(4.29), perceived seriousness(3.94), cues to action(3.30) and perceived barriers(1.81). The mean was 4.13 in hand washing practice. The senior and well educated dental hygienists in general hospitals had a tendency to wash hands frequently. It is statistically significant(p<0.05). In regard to the correlation among the subfactors of health beliefs, susceptibility had a statistically significant positive correlation to seriousness, benefits and cues to action, and seriousness was positively correlated to benefits and cues to action. Conclusions : It is necessary to develop and implement hand washing education program for dental hygienists focusing on perceived benefits and barriers which are two of the health beliefs affecting the hand washing practice.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to review the current status of clinical practice and training in dental hygiene in hospitals and clinics for the students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 80 dental hospitals and clinics from August 8 to September 12, 2016. Except incomplete answers, 211 copies were retrieved and analyzed. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects (6 items), present condition of clinical education (7 items), support policy and facilities (8 items), teaching personnel (6 items), improvement direction (3 items), and general considerations (3 items). Results: The annual practice time for students was 8.4 weeks. The average number of students per each practice institution was 5.95. The evaluation of the clinical practice period was rated as 'average' by 55.3% of the respondents, while 65.4% preferred the current duration of the practice. Meanwhile, 33.0% of the respondents wanted to increase the practice period. In clinical training education support, 62.3% of the hospitals had a person in charge, 79.2% of the hospitals and clinics had a operative procedure, appointed staff and a department for student practice. But 86.5% of the hospitals did not have standards for the budget for practice and instruction fee. In the personnel for clinical training, 52.6% said they were dental hygienists. In 87.1%, the practice instruction conducted by professors was done through communication with the hospital or clinic, while the man-to-man practice instruction was 8.6%. Conclusions: It is necessary to improve the process and operation method of dental hygiene clinical training. In order to make clinical training meet education goals, a standardized set of criteria is needed to support training education and guidelines for instructors and students.
This study was conducted on 185 workers at 73 dental clinics and university hospitals in Daegu to investigate the actual prevention of infection and vaccination against B-type hepatitis among dental workers. 1. According to the result of medical examination, only 35 out of 144 (24%) dental clinic workers had periodic health examination while 7 out of 9 (78%) university hospital workers did. 2. In a survey on vaccination against B-type hepatitis, 52 workers aged 29 or younger (96.3%), 38 dental hygienists (51.9%) and 44 dental workers at dental clinics (81.5%) have not had any vaccination against B-type hepatitis. The rest appeared to have had vaccination or be aware that they had antibody against B-type hepatitis without having to have any vaccination. 3. According to the result of a survey on the existence of antibody by job, 42 (56%) of dental hygienists, 15 (20%) of assistant nurses, 12 (16%) of medical assistants and 6 (8%) of dental technicians did not know whether or not they had antibody. This suggests that all types of dental workers except dental hygienists have low awareness of whether or not they have antibody. 4. In a survey on the relation between general characteristics of subjects and the sterilization of dental equipment, alcohol disinfection of high speed handpiece and low speed handpiece was most common among dental workers aged 29 or younger, and all of those aged over 40 used autoclave. By position, alcohol disinfection was used most commonly for high-speed handpiece. antiseptic solution deposition for disposable suction lips, and autoclaving for impression. By workplace, dental workers at university hospitals used autoc1aving most frequently for high/low speed handpiece while those at dental hospitals and dental clinics used alcohol disinfection most frequently and even some respondents replied that they did not disinfect. For metal cups, workers at dental clinics and dental hospitals did not use any sterilizing method while those at university hospitals used autoclaving. For disposable suction tips, workers at dental clinics used antiseptic solution deposition and those at dental hospitals used alcohol disinfection but some respondents replied that they did not disinfect. For metal suctions and impression trays, autoclaving was most common in all workplaces but some dental clinics replied that they did not disinfect impression trays. According to work experience, alcohol disinfection was most common for high/low speed handpiece. For disposable suction tips, dental workers with 3 years' or shorter work experience, those with 3~6 years' experience and those with 9~12 years' experience used antiseptic solution deposition most commonly, and many of those with 6~9 years replied that they did not disinfect. The results of this study stated above suggest that systematic education is necessary for all dental workers for enhancing th eir awareness of B-type hepatitis and the prevention of infection. Moreover, dental workers are required to make efforts to prevent infection with B-type hepatitis voluntarily and actively.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the cognition and practice of infection control in the dental hygienists. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 220 dental hygienists in Busan and Gyeongnam from August 1 to 31, 2014. The questionnaire was adapted from Nam. The questionnaire consisted of four questions of the general characteristics of the subjects, two questions of infection control factors, four questions of clinic environment, 50 questions of awareness of infection control, and 50 questions of infection control practice. Cronbach's alpha in the awareness of infection control was 0.958 and that in infection control practice was 0.950. Results: The dental hygienists in the large scale hospitals tended to have higher score of cognition and practice of infection control thatn those in the small scale hospitals(p<0.001). Small scale hospitals tended to have lower infection rate than the large scale hospitals. The education for the infection control guideline reduced the infection prevalence rate. Conclusions: In order to reduce the infection prevalence rate, it is necessary to educate the dental hygienists continuously and to provide the infection control guideline to the dental clinics.
It follows in increase of the old age population and the loss of teeth increases, also the supplement prosthetics treatment which is caused by loss of teeth is various and it develops and the dentistry implant demand is increasing. This study enforced a self-administered survey with 197 dental personnels employed in dental hospitals, dental clinics from August 15, 2007, to September 15, in the area of Daejeon. It's ultimately intended to serve as a basis for the preparation of more effective, appropriate dental implants education programs for personnels, who take a crucial part in dental implants operation, provide better dental services to patients who are in need of dental implants operation. As the result, the study got the following conclusion. 1. The population sociological feature of dental hospital and dental clinic showed that significant differences of dental service career. Dental service career of dental personnels shows; below 3 years 43.1%, 4~6 years 35.3%, more than 7 years 21.6% in dental hospitals, below 3 years 29.5%, 4~6 years 28.1%, more than 7 years 42.5% in dental clinics(p=0.027). 2. The average score of personnels knowledge in dental implants was 3.67point, from analyzing the knowledge on dental implants of dental personnels from dental health-care settings, dental personnels employed in dental hospitals scored relatively higher than in dental clinics(p=0.129). Dental personnels with 4~6 years of experience scored the highest(p=0.002). 3. The average score of dental personnels compliance in dental implants was 3.92point, from analyzing the compliance of dental implants of dental personnels from dental health-care settings, dental personnels employed in dental hospitals scored relatively higher than in dental clinics(p=0.006). Dental personnels with 4~6 years of experience scored the highest(p=0.707). 4. The contingency coefficient between dental implants general knowledge and the general compliance(r=0.233, p=0.001), operation knowledge and operation compliance(r=0.332, p=0.000), maintenance knowledge and maintenance compliance(r=0.236, p=0.001). 5. Recently dental implants is emerging as one of the important medical services in the dental treatment sector. From analyzing the compliance of dental implants of dental personnels in dental health-care settings, dental personnels employed in dental hospitals scored relatively higher than in dental clinics. Consequently, the effort of the dentist and the dental personnels demanded to be earnestly to improves the difference of the knowledge and compliance against the dental implants of the dental personnels in dental health-care settings, it is thought that with reinforcement of effective role share and professionalism to success of dental implants, more system and the specialty dental implants education which is standardized continuously must be provided to all dental personnels.
Background: Dental hygienists study dental radiology through the dental hygiene department and curriculum, and most of the radiography work in dental clinics is performed by dental hygienists; however, the legal work regulations for dental hygienists place restrictions on the type of radiography performed. This study aimed to identify the actual conditions of the radiographic work performed by dental hygienists and to determine the difference according to the type of hospital. Methods: This study included 195 dental hygienists working at dental medical institutions in the metropolitan area. A survey was conducted on regarding the radiographic work performed and the clinical career of the main performers. The radiography work was divided into periapical radiography, bite-wing radiography, occlusal radiography, panoramic radiography, computed tomography (CT), and cephalometric radiography. Results: The frequency of performing intraoral radiography was as follows: periapical radiography, 94.9%; bite-wing radiography, 93.8%; and occlusal radiography, 77.9%. The frequency of performing extraoral radiography was 94.4% for panoramic radiography, 89.7% for CT, and 73.3% for cephalometric radiography. The frequency of internal and external radiography performance was higher among hygienists in dental clinics than among those in dental hospitals and university hospitals. The analysis of the dental hygienists' clinical experience in the areas of intraoral and extraoral radiography showed that those working at university hospitals, dental hospitals, and dental clinics had over 5 years, 2~4 years, and 1 year of clinical experience, respectively. The hygienists with less than 1 year of clinical experience showed high performance frequency (p<0.05). Conclusion: For the dental hygienists to perform radiography safely, a discussion regarding the revision of related laws and regulations is warranted.
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the perception of dental infection-control coordinator (DICC) among dental hygienist and determine whether there is a difference in perception depending on the type of work. Methods: Dental hygienists working at the dentistry were conveniently extracted and distributed to 351 patients, and the data of 320 patients were finally analyzed. The chi-square test was conducted to determine the difference in perception of the DICC according to the type of work, and the one-way ANOVA was performed to determine the difference in the perception of DICC tasks. A p-value of <0.05 was statistically significant. Results: General hospitals and university hospitals (100%), dental hospitals (95.8%), and dental clinics (86.6%) showed the highest awareness of the need for DICC. The dental clinics had the lowest level of awareness regarding the duties of the DICC, and dental hospitals and clinics were in different areas with different levels of awareness regarding infection control-related administrative support areas (3.98-4.21 and 3.79-4.12 of 5). Conclusions: Because of a difference in perception regarding the work of DICC according to the type of work, dental organizations should establish the tasks of DICC and develop an education program for a person in charge based on this.
Technological advances in contemporary medicine has discovered the causes of countless diseases and recorded a noticeable medical performance. As technology develops, the role of hospitals is expanding to include disease prevention of inpatients, on top of their fundamental role of treating diseases. Recently, hospitals are becoming more influential as they create environments to provide comfort and stability to patients. In this regard, contemporary hospitals are increasingly shifting their focus to create a patient-centric environment as well as develop into humanistic establishments. The same goes to dentists, as well. Since inpatients often have fear and frustration over treatment, hospitals should figure out the environmental factors that are more effective and relaxing for patients and design medical services to provide them. The patients' movement and spaces during their treatment were categorized by stages and collected for gazing information using eye tracking. It analyzed users' gaze information according to Heatmap analysis of distribution and frequency and was determined the presence or absence of stimuli on the components of space. This research is an advanced research to study and enhance treatment environment based on the analysis of patients' gazes. It attempted to create an opportunity to get closer to patient-centric environment by understanding the stimulants and obstacles and controlling the background settings.

Sinonasal sarcoidosis in the head and neck region is infrequent. Its occurrence can be either isolated in combination with other systems. The literature reveals that the occurrence of sinonasal sarcoidosis without lung involvement is rare. In general, sarcoidosis is a chronic non-caseating granulomatous disease of unknown origin, often identified after biopsy. In this article, we report on a benign tumor of the face that produced a diagnostic dilemma, necessitating refinement of the surgical access and in toto removal of the benign tumor.
