  • A study on the biocompatibility of two types of new glass-ceramics materials, metal disc and dental porcelain that were already made for dental artificial tooth in the previous study, have been attempted. The chemical behavior and the Victor's hardness change in she artificial saliva and Ringer's solution have been also investigated. From the experiment of Implantation of glass-ceramics Into dorsal subcutaneous tissue of Sprague-Dawley rats, glass-cerarmics did not show any particular system of rejection for histrocompatibility.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the abrasion resistance and surface roughness of conventional dental stones and improved dental stones and newly developed dental stones. Materials included in this study were several dental stones and newly developed dental stone; 2 type III. 6 type IV (including newly developed dental stone). 1 type V Ten specimens for each material, total ninety specimens were made. Each specimen was subjected to 50 complete cycle abrasion under constant load 0.42N at speed or 6mm per sec. The depth after abrasion test was measured for each specimen. Surface roughness before and after abrasion test was compared. The results were as follows ; 1. The resin containing die materials such as Tuff Rock and Resin Rock had superior abrasion resistance. 2. Type IV, V dental stone exhibited greater abrasion resistance than Type III dental stone. 3. The results or the surface roughness showed similar pattern with the abrasion resistance.

  • The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between obesity and dental caries in children and adolescents. This study was analyzed by searching the following words in Google Scholar (https://scholar.google.co.kr), Kiss (kiss.kstudy.com), KCI (www.kci.go.kr), and RISS (riss.kr): "pediatric," "juvenile," "obesity," and "dental caries." A total of 19 Korean and 10 foreign studies out of 107 studies were selected after excluding the studies based on the exclusion criteria. When evaluating the relationship between childhood and adolescent obesity and dental caries, 16 out of 29 articles (55.2%) indicated a significant relationship, and 2 (6.9%) indicated different results based on sex, while 13 articles (44.8%) showed no significant relationship between obesity and dental caries. Among the significant studies, a total of 10 (34.5%) showed that the number of dental caries increased according to an increase in obesity, i.e., from normal to overweight to obese. A total of 5 studies (17.2%) reported that the number of dental caries increased in underweight individuals compared to those of normal weight, or decreased according to an increase in obesity, while 1 study (3.4%) indicated that the number of dental caries increased in both the underweight and obese groups compared to the normal weight group. Therefore, studies on the relationship between dental caries and the degree of obesity in children and adolescents have not shown a certain trend.

  • The design process of the dental handpiece is described. The parameters of the high speed air turbine are estimated. The effect of supply hole on the stiffuess and damping of the air bearing for handpiece is studied numerically. The Reynolds equation is solved by using the divergence formulation and the perturbation method. The test rig is built and the test procedure is developed for the turbine rotational speed measurement by using Fourier transform of noise generated by the turbine during steady operation.

  • Currently, dental implants are widely used as artificial teeth due to their good chewing performance and long life cycle. Generally, a dental implant consists of an abutment as the upper part and a fixture as the lower part. When chewing forces are repeatedly applied to a dental implant, a gap is often generated at the interfacial surface between the abutment and the fixture, and it results in some deterioration such as loosening of the fastening screw, dental retraction and fixture fracture. To enhance the sealing performance for coping with such problems, this study proposes a new sealing-type abutment having a number of grooves along the conical surface circumference, and it carries out finite element analysis in consideration of the external chewing force and pretension between the abutment and the fixture. The result shows that the proposed sealing-type abutment shows an enhanced sealing performance in terms of the contact pressure in comparison with a conventional abutment.
