  • The magnitude of the plastic zone around the crack tip of DENT(Double Edge Notched Tension) specimen and the crack growth length under cyclic loading were measured by ESPI(Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry) system. The measured magnitude of plastic zone was compared with the equations proposed by Irwin and calculated by a nonlinear static method of MSC/NASTRAN. The measured crack growth length by ESPI system was also compared with the obtained data by the image analysis system. From the study, it is confirmed that the plastic zone and crack growth length can be measured accurately with the high-tech equipment.

  • Base on insurance vehicle collision and bodily injury claim reports, 23,655 cases of vehicle to vehicle accidents occurred in Korea 2010 are investigated in order to understand vehicle damage severities, repair costs and occupant injury types. The results of our statistical analysis reveal that minor damages with small dent or scratches on vehicle body panels which is assumed to imply during very low speed crashes are major portion of accident severities types. The most vulnerable body regions due to the real-world accident are neck. The 86.3% of total injured driver in minor rear damaged vehicles has reported neck pains and they are followed by whole bodies and head but with much lower occurrence rates.

  • In this paper, a laser scattering mechanism are designed to detect micro defects such as dent, scratch, pinhole, etc. Its influential parameters are experimentally selected and scattering patterns of micro defects have been analyzed for silicon wafer in solar cell. As a result of experiments, scattered lights are rather increased in wafer surface with micro defects, in comparison to no micro ones. Scattering parameters are optimally selected for obtaining robust and high quality laser scattering images of micro defects. It is shown that scattered light components are linearly increased according to the increase of micro defect sizes, and the depth of micro-defects give a large influence on optical deflection.

  • Pyridine and acetone are efficacious inducers of CYP2E1 in both rats and rabbits. The response in the elevation of CYP2E1 levels, changes in CYP2E1 mRNA levels, and enhanced translational processing of hepatic CYP2E1 mRNA during the early phase of CYP2E1 induction by the solvents pyridine and acetone were examined. Time-depen-dent incease in CYP2E1 levels occurred at early times (6-24h) following a single dose of pyridine treatmene, as assessed by Western immunoblot analysis, whereas the levels in CYP2E1 mRNA transiently decreased at 12h post-treatment, returning to the level present in untreated animals.

  • 20-hydroxvecdysone (20-HE) seems to be related in the regulation of vitellogenesis in Drosophifa sp. (robwta species sroup). Although yolk proteins (YPs) synthesis does not occur at a high rate in fat body cells of one daw-old female after eclosion, application of 20-HE to isolated abdomens deprived of anterior endocrine glands stimulated the synthesis and secretion of YPs into the hemolvmph. An injection of 0.3 $\mul$ of a 10-s M 20-HE was sufficient topromote synthesis and secretion of YPs in isolated abdomens. The response of isolated automens to hormones was first detected between 2 hr and 3 hr after treaDent of 10-s M 20-HE. Transcript analysis showed that the effect of 20-HE on yolk protein synthesis was mediated at the level of transcription.

  • The shot peening is largely used for a surface treatment in which small spherical parts called shots are blasted on a surface of a metallic components with velocities up to 100m/s. This treatment leads to an improvement of fatigue behavior due to the developed compressive residual stresses, and so it has gained widespread acceptance in the automobile and aerospace industries. The residual stress profile on surface layer depends on the parameters of shot peening, which are, shot velocity, shot diameter, coverage, impact angle, material properties etc. and the method to confirm this profile is only measurement by X-ray diffractometer. Despite its importance to automobile and aerospace industries, little attention has been devoted to the accurate modelling of the process. In this paper, the simulation technique is applied to predict the magnitude and distribution of the residual stress and plastic deformation caused by shot peening with the help of the finite element analysis.

  • In this paper, the effect of wrinkling on the failure behavior of thin membrane was studied using geometrically nonlinear shell element post-buckling analysis with global-local analysis strategy. In the analysis, double-edge notched and single-edge notched tensile specimen configurations were considered. The analyses were performed for both cases with allowing and suppressing the wrinkling deformation. The results were investigated focusing on the effect of wrinkle development on the variation of J-integral values at the cut tip. The effect of cut lengths and the specimen lengths were also systematically studied.

  • In this paper, the effect of the crack growth length on the plastic zone size at the crack tip and the crack growth lives of the DENT specimen under constant amplitude cyclic loading were studied. The plastic zone size was calculated by nonlinear static method in commercial finite element analysis program, MSC/NASTRAN and the crack growth lives were also calculated by using compliance function considering geometric shape in MSC/FATIGUE. The calculated plastic zone size increased proportional to the crack length. And comparison of calculated plastic zone size and crack growth lives with the experimental results shows a good agreement.

  • Recently, UV pulse laser is widely used in micro machining of the research, development and industry field of IT, NT and BT products because the laser short wavelength provides not only micro drilling, micro cutting and micro grooving which has a very fine line width, but also high absorption coefficient which allows a lot of type of materials to be machined more easily. To analyze the dynamic deformation during a very short processing time, which is nearly about several tens nanoseconds, the commercial Finite Element Analysis (FEA) code, LS-DYNA 3D, was employed for the computitional simulation of the UV laser micro machining behavior for thin copper material in this paper. A finite element model considering high strain rate effect is especially suggested to investigate the micro phenomena which are only dominated by mechanically pressure impact in disregard of thermally heat transfer. From these computational results, some of dynamic deformation behaviors such as dent deformation shapes, strains and stresses distributions were observed and compared with previous experimental works. These will help us to understand micro interaction between UV laser beam and material.

  • A design system was developed for the doubler plate of a ship structure simultaneously subjected to in-plane loads and lateral pressure based on general dimensions and those of a representative ship structure. An equivalent design equation that considers various structural design parameters was derived by introducing the equivalent plate thickness theory, and the design of the doubler plate reinforcement of the ship structure was developed. A hybrid structural design system was established for a doubler plate simultaneously subjected to in-plane loads and lateral pressure consisting of two modules: an optimized design module and a double plate strength & design review module. The practical application of this design system was illustrated to show its usability. It was found that the design safety of the doubler plate was ensured, and this system could be used as an initial design guide to review the double plate reinforcement for a dent or corrosion of the ship plate members. Using the developed design system would make it possible to obtain a more reasonable doubler plate structure that considers the rational reinforcement of plate members of ship structures. In addition, a more reliable structural analysis using a strength evaluation process can be performed to verify the efficiency of the optimum structural design for the doubler plate structure.
