Pretreatment process consisted of submerged hollow-fiber microfiltration(HMF) membrane and spiral-wound nanofiltration(SNF) membrane has been developed by NETEC, KHNP for the purpose of improving the impurities of liquid radioactive waste before entering Selective Ion Exchange System(SIES). The lab-scale combined system was installed at Kori NPP #2 nuclear power plant and demonstration tests using actual liquid radioactive waste were carried out to verify the performance of the combined system. The submerged HMF membrane was adopted for removal of suspended solid in liquid radioactive waste and the SNF membrane was used for removal of particulate radioisotope such as, Ag-l10m and oily waste because ion exchange resin can not remove particulate radioisotopes. The liquid waste in Waste Holdup Tank (WHT) was processed with HMF and SNF membrane, and SIES. The initial SS concentration and total activity of actual waste were 38,000ppb and $1.534{\times}10_{-3}{\mu}Ci/cc$, respectively. The SS concentration and total activity of permeate were 30ppb and lower than LLD(Lower Limit of Detection), respectively.
A water reuse system was designed for a demonstration plant by combining fiber filtration and electrolysis. A discharged dye wastewater after treated with biomedia was used in this study. It was found that an additional removal of suspended solids (SS) was feasible with 2-stage filtration while electrolysis was not effective. Also, $COD_{cr}$ and $COD_{Mn}$ were not removed with 2 -stage filtration but electrolysis resulted in about 26.9% additional removal. This indicates that electrolysis play an important role in organic removal. Removal of T-N and T-P was negligible with 1 and 2-stage fiber filtration and low-level electrolyte. However, with 2000 ppm of electrolyte, their removal efficiencies were about 83.1 and 60%, respectively, suggesting that the removal rates are well associated with the electrolyte concentrations. With high-level electrolyte, colority was removed about 82% while chlorine ions were removed only about 10%. Therefore, to treat underground water containing high-level salinity in the follow-up study, based on the results in this paper, a combined system with selection of additional unit process and reverse osmosis will be designed.
As Korean government has activated the renewable portfolio standard (RPS) since 2012, producers have been seeking and using the various renewable resources to meet the RPS quota. One of these efforts, Power Bio-Fuel oil demonstration project is being conducted to check the operability and compatibility with fossil fuel, Fuel oil (B-C) from 2014. The oil is a mixture of vegetable oil and animal fat or fatty acid ester of them and should satisfy some specification to use the power generation. The oil's quality and combustion characteristics are different from conventional oil, Fuel oil (B-C) in current power plant facility. In this study, it was investigated the storage stability and malodor intensity of Bio-Fuel oil.
Currently, there is a need for the development of an advanced new technology for Low-and Intermediate-Level Radioactive Waste (LILW) treatment from nuclear power plants. The vitrification and melting technology by the use of the electrical equipments such as induction heater and plasma torch based furnace, along with off-gas treatment are considered as the most promising one of the LILW treatment technology since they can produce a very stable waste forms as well as considerably large volume reduction, which is a world-wide trend to apply for radioactive waste treatment. Korea Electric Power Research Institute(KEPRI) has already completed a feasibility study on LILW treatment and conceptual system design of a demonstration plant to be constructed. For this research, KEPRI selected a cold crucible melter(CCM) for the vitrification of combustible waste, and plasma torch based furnace(PT) for the melting of noncombustible waste, along with off-gas treatment for the volatile radioisotopes such as cesium.
The sensor signal validation and failure detection system must be able to detect, isolate, and identify sensor degradation as well as provide a reconstruction of the measurements. In this study, this is accomplished by combining the neural network, the Generalized Consistency Checking(GCC), and the Sequential Probability Ratio Test(SPRT) method in a decision estimator module. The GCC method is a computationally efficient system for redundant sensors, while the SPRT provides the ability to make decisions based on the degradation history of a sensor. The methodology is also extended to the detection of noise degradation. The acceptability of the proposed method is demonstration by using the simulation data in safety injection accident of nuclear power plants. The results show that the signal validation and sensor failure detection system is able to detect and isolate a bias failure and noise type failures under transient conditions. And also, the system is able to provide the validated signal by reconstructing the measurement signals in the failure conditions considered.
In this research, to develop the practical application system of fresh water generation system with plate-type fresh water generator using low pressure evaporation method is the main object, and to do that, this study used the evacuated solar collector with operating range of about $50-85^{\circ}C$ as thermal energy source and solar photovoltaic as electric energy source. To achieve that object, this study set up the demo-plant, then estimated and analyzed the usefulness, the safety, and the reliability through pre-tests during short time ahead of the long-time operation. This study showed that the pumps, which are including sea water supply, ejector, hot water supply, and fresh water pumps, were operated one after another. And, the fresh water yield was closely related with the solar irradiance and lower supply temperature of hot water was revealed more reasonable for the solar energy desalination system. That is due to the insufficient area than the solar collector area being required that was estimated through the performance tests of the fresh water generator.
In this study, thermal performance test of VMD module was performed, prior to the construction of the demonstration plant using the vacuum membrane distillation (VMD) module of the capacity of $400m^3/day$ and to the commercialization of the VMD module. For the thermal performance test, the experimental equipment of capacity of $2m^3/day$ was constructed. The permeate flux test and thermal performance test according to feed water conditions such as temperature and flow rate were conducted. The VMD module used in the study was manufactured by ECONITY Co., LTD with PVDF hollow fiber membrane. As a result, the Performance Ratio (PR) of the VMD module showed the maximum value of 0.904 under the condition of feed water temperature of $75^{\circ}C$ and flow rate of $8m^3/h$. PR value of the VMD module using PVDF hollow fiber membrane showed linearly increasing relationship with feed water temperature and flow rate. Also, The permeate flux of the VMD module was analyzed to have maximum value of 18.25 LMH and the salt rejection was 99.99%.

Nagra was established in 1972 by the Swiss nuclear power plant operators and the Federal Government to implement permanent and safe disposal of all types of radioactive waste generated in Switzerland. The Swiss Nuclear Energy Act specifies that these shall be disposed of in deep geological repositories. A number of different geological formations and sites have been investigated to date and an extended database of geological characteristics as well as data and state-of-the-art methodologies required for the evaluation of the long-term safety of repository systems have been developed. The research, development, and demonstration activities are further supported by the two underground research facilities operating in Switzerland, the Grimsel Test Site and the Mont Terri Project, along with very active collaboration of Nagra with national and international partners. A new site selection process was approved by the Federal Government in 2008 and is ongoing. This process is driven by the long-term safety and feasibility of the geological repositories and is based on a step-wise decision-making approach with a strong participatory component from the affected communities and regions. In this paper a brief history and the current status of the Swiss radioactive waste management program are presented and special characteristics that may be useful beyond the Swiss program are highlighted and discussed.
As our government is actively introducing the RPS (Renewable Portfolio Standards) as a national renewable energy obligation policy, power producers are using the various renewable energy to meet the RPS supply quota since 2012. Recently, it is appling to use power bio-fuel oil in bio-fuel oil demonstration project with power companies. In general, power bio-fuel oils are composed of mixture products of vegetable oil, animal fat, fatty acid ester and waste oil. It is already developing for a power plant as a renewable energy abroad. In Korea, it is studying a 100% combustion and blended combustion of heavy fuel oil and bio-fuel oil. In this study, we investigated fuel characteristics of mixed power bio-fuel oil and its emission performance. Especially, it was reduced emissions of bio-oil in industrial boilers due to bio-fuel properties as compare with fuel oil.
