Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites have been widely used due to their great strength, stiffness and light weight. However, due to its anisotropy and inhomogeneous properties the machining process of CFRP composites is typically more complex than that of regular metals. Since there are many defects, such as delamination and tool wear during the machining process of CFRP composites, the optimization of this process is essential in improving the productivity. In this study, orthogonal machining of CFRP composites was performed to identify the machining characteristics of these materials. In addition, an experimental observation of delamination was investigated through the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In these experiments, the cutting forces were measured and analyzed to determine the difference between machining of CFRP composites and metals. The comparison between the numerical models and experimental results was performed in terms of the maximum cutting forces.
In this paper, this study aims at the evaluation on the characteristics of CFRP laminate plates using a falling weight impact tester. The experiment was conducted on several laminates of different orientation. A system was built far measur- ing the impact strength of CFRP laminates in consideration of stress wave propagation theory using a falling weight impact tester. Delamination areas of impacted specimens for the different ply orientation were measured with ultrasonic C- scanner to find correlation between impact energy and delamination area. Absorbed energy of quasi-isotropic specimen having flour interfaces was higher than that of orthotropic laminates with two interfaces. The more interfaces, the greater the energy absorbed. The absorbed energy oft hybrid specimen containing a GFRP layer was higher than that of normal specimens.
Composite materials are widely used in industry because of its high ration of strength vs. weight, and consequently many nondestructive methods have been developing to find stress or subsurface defects like crack, and delamination inside composite material. Among them, optical inspection methods have been widely neglected because of translucent or opaque nature of composite. (omitted)
This research was carried out to examine the properties of fancy cherry veneer overlaid on the PF resin bonded Meranti plywood floor, which 2.5% green tea leaf powder was applied in the UV varnishes and the adhesives for scavenging the volatile organic compounds. The results were as follows: 1. The various properties of the treated samples, such as density, moisture content, thickness swelling, bending strength(MOR), adhesion shear strength, surface abrasion, curling, cyclic delamination test with boiling water, boiling property, cold-resistance and heat resistance, acid resistance and alkali resistance, and anti-contamination property showed no significant difference between the properties of the control samples. 2.5% green tea leaf powder treated floor gave a little better results than the control for surface scratch test. 2. In case of QUV and weathering test, no difference between the treated sample and control was found. 3. The floor was discolored by adding 10% green tea leaf powder to UV coating, and the floor was also discolored to light green during by the soaking test. The color of floor was not changed up to 5% addition level.
Stresses that develop due to differential shrinkage between polymer modified cement mortar (PM) and Portland cement concrete (PCC) in a repaired concrete beam at early ages were investigated. Interface delamination or debonding of the newly cast repair material from the base is often observed in the field when the drying shrinkage of the repair material is relatively large. This study presents results of both experimental and analytical works. In the experimental part of the study, development of the material properties such as compressive strength, elastic modulus, interface bond strength, creep constant, and drying shrinkage was investigated by testing cylinders and beams for a three-week period in a constant-temperature chamber. Development of shrinkage-induced strains in a PM-PCC composite beam was determined. In the analytical part of the study, two analytical solutions were used to compare the experimental results with the analytically predicted values. One analysis method was of an exact type but could not consider the effect of creep. The other analysis method was rather approximate in nature but the creep effect was included. Comparison between the analytical and the experimental results showed that both analytical procedures resulted in stresses that were in fair agreement with the experimentally determined values. It may be important to consider the creep effect to estimate shrinkage-induced stresses at early ages.
Carbon fiber has excellent specific strength, corrosion resistance and heat resistance. And p-Aramid fiber has high toughness and heat resistance and high elasticity, and is used in various fields such as industrial protective materials, bulletproof helmets and vests, as well as industrial fields. However, carbon fiber is relatively expensive, and is susceptible to brittle fracture behavior due to its low fracture strain. On the other hand, the aramid fiber tends to decrease in elastic modulus and strength when applied to the epoxy matrix, but it is inexpensive and has higher elongation and fracture toughness than carbon fiber. Thus the twill hybrid carbonaramid fiber reinforced composite laminate composite was investigated for a delamination fracture toughness under Mode I loading by 2 kinds of MBT and MCC deduction. The specimen was fabricated with 20 hybrid fabric plies. The initial crack was made by inserting the teflon tape in the center plane with a0/W=0.5 length. The results show that SERR(Strain Energy Release Rate) as the critical and stable delamination fracture toughness were 0.09 kJ/㎡, 0.386 kJ/㎡ by MBT deduction, and 0.192 kJ/㎡, 0.67 kJ/㎡ by MCC deduction, respectively.
This paper deals with the buckling and postbuckling responses, and the progressive failure of square laminates of symmetric lay-up with a central rectangular cutout under in-plane shear load. A detailed investigation is made to show the effects of cutout size and cutout aspect ratio on the buckling and postbuckling responses, failure loads and failure characteristics of $(+45/-45/0/90)_{2s}$, $(+45/-45)_{4s}$ and $(0/90)_{4s}$ laminates. The 3-D Tsai-Hill criterion is used to predict the failure of a lamina while the onset of delamination is predicted by the interlaminar failure criterion. In addition, the effects of boundary conditions on buckling loads, failure loads, failure modes, and maximum transverse deflection for a $(+45/-45/0/90)_{2s}$ laminate with and without a square cutout have been presented. It is concluded that because of early onset of delamination at the net section of cutouts before first-ply failure, total strength of the laminate with very small cutouts can not be utilized.
Latex modification of concrete provides the material with higher flexural strength. This increase in flexural strength can attribute to the crack-arresting action of polymer in concrete, and also to the bonding they provide between the matrix and aggregates. This experimental study presents the fracture behavior of 12 flexural reinforced concrete beams repaired or strengthened by latex-modified concrete with the main experimental variables such as overlay thickness, strength thickness, and shear reinforcement. The results are as follow: All beam specimens having shear reinforcement were failed by delamination rupture at concrete interface at about 80% of ultimate loading after flexural cracking. All specimens overlayed and strengthened by latex-modified concrete (LMC) showed higher ultimate flexural strength than OPC control specimen, but lower than LMC control specimen. This increase in flexural strength could attribute to the high bonding they provide between the matrix and aggregates. All specimens except two shear unreinforced showed quite similar and consistent displacement behavior. The effect of overlay and strength thickness on the load-displacement relationship were a small at this study.
