Gelatinization and retrogradation properties of modified starches which were prepared by steeping sweet potato at $40^{\circ}C$ for 2, 4, 7 and 10 days were investigated. The peak temperature of gelatinization and enthalpy of untreated starch by DSC were $53.9^{\circ}C\;and\;1.32\;cal/g$, respectively, but those of modified starch were increased by steeping. In gelatinization by alkali, starches with 2, 4 and 7 day steeping showed higher viscosities than untreated starch, whereas the viscosities of starches with 10 day steeping decreased. The clarities in paste decreased during storage in all starches and decreased in starches with steeping. The degrees of retrogradation by ${\alpha}-amylase-iodine$ method were higher in starches with steeping than untreated starch. The enthalpy of retrograded starches by DSC increased by steeping except 4 day steeping starch. The sweet potato extract containing sugar inhibited the retrogradation of starch paste and the degree were higher in residual starches than in untreated starch.
This study examined changes in the characteristics of Aralia Kimchi made using different CaCl$_2$ treatments and seasonings by documenting changes occurring in the course of preparation and preservation. The result exhibited no visible changes in the degree of pH, acidity or salinity in the various Kimchi sample. The total number of bacterium and lactobacillus increased gradually in the early stage of preservation and then showed an accelerated growth until the 42$^{nd}$ day, after which a plateau was maintained to the 56$^{th}$ day followed by a downturn trend to the 70$^{th}$ day. No visible change in color was observed during the preservation period while the sample treated with CaCl$_2$ exhibited a higher degree of hardness than its untreated counterpart, although no distinctive difference was noted in the sensory test.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to report the effects of Korean medical treatment including Sanhuhyulpung-tang on three postpartum patients who suffered from hyperhidrosis. Methods: We treated three patients complained of postpartum symptoms including hyperhidrosis. The patients were treated by Traditional Korean Medicine including herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion, and cupping therapy. Sanhuhyulpung-tang is a herbal medicine prescription which is used in clinical practice for the treatment of postpartum sweating, anxiety, flushing, and joint pain. Three patients were hospitalized for treatment for 6, 8, and 19 days respectively. During hospitalization, patients took Sanhuhyulpung-tang three times a day, and acupuncture, moxibustion, and cupping were performed once a day. To evaluate the degree of improvement, we used VAS score of the patient's chief complaint during hospitalization. Results: After the treatment, symptoms including hyperhidrosis were improved. The degree of excessive sweating decreased to 30% in two patients, and 55% in one patient. Combined symptoms including lower coldness, burning sensation, chilling, and multiple site pain also improved on discharge day. Conclusions: This case report shows that Korean medicine treatment including Sanhuhyulpung-tang can improve postpartum symptoms including hyperhidrosis.
Objective : Hypernatremia is a common complication encountered during the treatment of neurocritically ill patients. However, it is unclear whether clinical outcomes correlate with the severity of hypernatremia in such patients. Therefore, we investigated the impact of hypernatremia on mortality of these patients, depending on the degree of hypernatremia. Methods : Among neurosurgical patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) in a tertiary hospital from January 2013 to December 2019, patients who were hospitalized in the ICU for more than 5 days and whose serum sodium levels were obtained during ICU admission were included. Hypernatremia was defined as the highest serum sodium level exceeding 150 mEq/L observed. We classified the patients into four subgroups according to the severity of hypernatremia and performed propensity score matching analysis. Results : Among 1146 patients, 353 patients (30.8%) showed hypernatremia. Based on propensity score matching, 290 pairs were included in the analysis. The hypernatremia group had higher rates of in-hospital mortality and 28-day mortality in both overall and matched population (both p<0.001 and p=0.001, respectively). In multivariable analysis of propensity score-matched population, moderate and severe hypernatremia were significantly associated with in-hospital mortality (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 4.58; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.15-9.75 and adjusted OR, 6.93; 95% CI, 3.46-13.90, respectively) and 28-day mortality (adjusted OR, 3.51; 95% CI, 1.54-7.98 and adjusted OR, 10.60; 95% CI, 5.10-21.90, respectively) compared with the absence of hypernatremia. However, clinical outcomes, including in-hospital mortality and 28-day mortality, were not significantly different between the group without hypernatremia and the group with mild hypernatremia (p=0.720 and p=0.690, respectively). The mortality rates of patients with moderate and severe hypernatremia were significantly higher in both overall and matched population. Interestingly, the mild hypernatremia group of matched population showed the best survival rate. Conclusion : Moderate and severe hypernatremia were associated with poor clinical outcomes in neurocritically ill patients. However, the prognosis of patients with mild hypernatremia was similar with that of patients without hypernatremia. Therefore, mild hypernatremia may be allowed during treatment of intracranial hypertension using hyperosmolar therapy.
Jeung-Pyun is a traditional fermented Korean food with rice flour, water, sugar, salt and unrefined rice wine(Takju). In order to investigate how the addition of soybean has an influence on Jeung-Pyun fermentation, changing to adding amount of soybean 0%, 5%, l0%. 15%, 20% based on rice weight, we carried out sensory evaluation and measured the physicochemical properties, instrumental characteristics and degree of gelatinization. The specific volume of Jeung-Pyun was increased as the more soybean was added. The pH of Jeung-Pyun batter was decreased as the fermentation time was longer, but it was increased as more soybean was added. The degree of gelatinization of Jeung-Pyun was decreased as storage day was longer, but it was high as more soybean was added compared to control(0%). In sensory evaluation, Jeung-Pyun added 5∼10% of soybean was good generally. Correlation coefficient between hardness and degree of gelatinization was high. In instrumental characteristics, hardness was increased only in control for room temperature storage(20$^{\circ}C$), but at 4$^{\circ}C$ it was less increased than control(0%) as more soybean was added. Cohesiveness was decreased generally as storage day was longer at 4$^{\circ}C$, but it was less decreased as more soybean was added. In brittleness at 4$^{\circ}C$, Jeung-Pyun of adding soybean was higher compared to control. In surface structure of Jeung-Pyun observerd by SEM. air pore size was small and distributed regularly as more soybean added. In conclusion. it can be suggested that the addition of soybean improve the quality of Jeung-Pyun.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the sealing ability of ZOE, FR and Sealapex, as a root canal sealer. Ninety six extracted anterior or premolar human teeth with single root were instrumented by using conventional method. After instrumentation, the teeth were divided into three groups and thirty two teeth in each group were filled as follows: ZOE group: ZOE cement as a root canal sealer in combination with guttapercha cone FR group: FR root canal sealer in combination with guttapercha cone Sealapex group: Sealapex root canal sealer in combination with guttapercha cone $^{45}Ca$ in the form of calcium chloride, was employed as the tracer in this study and produce the auto-radiograph. The depth of isotope penetration into the root canal was evaluated by method by Yates and Hembree at the intervals of 1 day, 7 days, 14 days and 30 days. The following conclusions were derived from the results obtained; 1. After 1 day, ZOE group exhibited the greatest penetration degree of radioisotope (p < 0.05). 2. After 14 days, there was some difference of the radioisotope penetration between each group, but its difference was not significant statistically. 3. After 30 days Sealapex group exhibited the least penetration degree of radioisotope (p < 0.025). 4. In ZOE and Sealapex groups, there was no change of the degree of radioisotope penetration with time.
To better define the relationship between dermal regeneration and wound contraction and scar formation, the effects of epidermal growth factor (EGF) loaded in collagen sponge matrix on the fibroblast cell proliferation rate and the dermal mechanical strength were investigated. Collagen sponges with acid-soluble fraction of pig skin were prepared and incorporated with EGF at 0, 4, and 8 $\mu$g/1.7 $cm^{2}$. Dermal fibroblasts were cultured to 80$\%$ confluence using DMEM, treated with the samples submerged, and the cell viability was estimated using MTT assay. A deep, $2^{nd}$ degree- burn of diameter 1 cm was prepared on the rabbit ear and the tested dressings were applied twice during the 15-day, post burn period. The processes of re-epithelialization and dermal regeneration were investigated until the complete wound closure day and histological analysis was performed with H-E staining. EGF increased the fibroblast cell proliferation rate. The histology showed well developed, weave-like collagen bundles and fibroblasts in EGF-treated wounds while open wounds showed irregular collagen bundles and impaired fibroblast growth. The breaking strength (944.1 $\pm$ 35.6 vs. 411.5 $\pm$ 57.0 Fmax, $gmm^{-2}$) and skin resilience (11.3 $\pm$ 1.4 vs. 6.5 $\pm$ 0.6 mJ/$mm^{2}$) were significantly increased with EGFtreated wounds as compared with open wounds, suggesting that EGF enhanced the dermal matrix formation and improved the wound mechanical strength. In conclusion, EGF-improved dermal matrix formation is related with a lower wound contraction rate. The impaired dermal regeneration observed in the open wounds could contribute to the formation of wound contraction and scar tissue development. An extraneous supply of EGF in the collagen dressing on deep, $2^{nd}$ degree-burns enhanced the dermal matrix formation.
Depending on the degree of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, there are inconsistent values in the serum trypsin-like immunoreactivity (TLI), hematology, and serology. To determine the correlation between those values and complete pancreatic insufficiency, 10 pancreatectomized dogs as the treated group and 10 sham operation dogs as control group were used. The entire treated group showed significant decrease in serum TLI level from 2.63$\pm$0.20 ng/ml (day 0) to 1.81$\pm$0.43 ng/ml at day 1 after the pancreatectomy (p<0.05) and the decline maintained till the end of the experiment. Blood glucose level gradually increased, but albumin level showed significant decrease (p<0.05) at day 1 and maintained the decline. Three clinical signs were observed such as depression, vomiting, and diarrhea. The entire treated group showed diarrhea throughout the experiment, but depression and vomiting were gradually diminished. The activity of serum alkaline phosphatase in the treated group increased till day 2 then decreased, on the other hand, control group showed continuous increase till day 4, and then decreased. Only experimental group showed the increased alanine aminotransferase activity at day 1. Serum lipase activity in the treated group jumped up at day 1 and then dropped down, which was even lower than the control. Regarding serum amlyase activity gradually decreased. According to these results, the assay of trypsin-like immunoreactivity showed the consistent result, so it suggests that TLI is an useful tool to determine the pancreatic exocrine function and possible diagnosis of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency compared to the simple assay of plasma amylase and lipase.
It is well documented that calcium is essential to cardiac contraction and the amplitude of contractility is proportional to the ionized calcium not to total calcium. Changes of serum ionic calcium before and after extracorporeal circulation were observed in fifty two patients operated on at Dept. of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Seoul National University Hospital, from May 21st, 1984, to July 6th, 1984. They were 28 males and 24 females including 21 acyanotic congenital heart diseases, 21 cyanotic congenital heart diseases, and 10 acquired valvular heart diseases. In general, preoperative serum ionic calcium was around the normal level, but those of immediate postoperative day and postop-first day were decreased subnormally with significance [P<0.05 vs. preop.]. From postop-third day, serum ionic calcium was returned to normal range. No significant difference was noticed in subgroups divided by 10 Kg of body weight and by the methods of myocardial protection. But the change of serum ionic calcium in the patients with prolonged pump time over 90 minutes was remarkable and the values were as follow; on immediate postop-day 1.780.18 mEq/L vs. 1.970.20 mEq/L [P<0.005],on postop-first day, 1.940.20mEq/L vs. 2.060.12 mEq/L [P<0.025], on postop-third day, 2.030.11mEq/L vs. 2.150.13mEq/L [P<0.01], and on postop-seventh day, 2.030.09mEq/L vs. 2.190.11mEq/L [P<0.005]. In summary, the serum ionic calcium was lowered after extracorporeal circulation and even severer degree according to the prolongation of bypass time. So, after extracorporeal circulation esp. in the cases with prolonged bypass time, early correction of lowered serum ionic calcium would be helpful to the postoperative hemodynamics.

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of diet of Korean safflower(Carthamus tinctorious L.) seed powder on bone tissue during the recovery of rib-fracture in rats. Male Sprague-Dawley rats of 10 weeks old, weighing 370$\pm$5g, were divided into two groups including the control group(C group, AIN-76 semipurified diet) and safflower seed group(S group, AIN-76 semipurified diet+10% safflower seed powder) and were fed experimental diets for 12 days after adaptation period. After this period, the 9th right rib was fractured surgically and sham-operation was also performed. Rats were fed with experimental diets for up to 30 more days after rib-fracture. The degree of bone repair was evaluated during the recovery period at the 8th, 11th, 16th, 21st, 30th days after the surgical operation by microscopic observation of the fractured rib tissue. In callus formation, the portion of hyaline cartilage was noticably higher in S group than C group. The intracatilagenous ossification was observed at the 8th day in S group, but at 11th day in C group. The intramembranous ossification in callus was widely found over the 8th day to the 11th day in S group, but it was shown over the 11th day to the 16th day in C group. Bone resorption was also occured more rapidly in S group as indicated by large numbers of osteoclasts observed. At the 30th day, most of trabecular bones were disappeared in S group, whereas still shwon in C group over wide ranges of fractured ribs. These results imply that the supplementation of Korean safflower seed powder influences in the recovery of bone fracture by accelerating the process of bone repair.
