  • This study was investigated the effect on operating characteristics of apparatus according to frosting and defrosting to develop of new defrosting equipment. The results showed as following. Frost was almost removed using the defrosting equipment with roll brush type that defrosting is possible under operating condition. Also, the temperature of compressor inlet, evaporator inlet and outlet showed higher value because of heat transfer resistance of cooling pipe frost comparing with defrosting condition. And the compressor work showed 10% lower and COP was presented 24% higher values than defrosting condition. Therefore, defrosting for cooling coil of refrigeration and low temperature storage was effected on operation and performance characteristics of equipment. This highly effects on real refrigeration apparatus which is operated in year-around.

  • This study attempted to investigate the value of photoelectric sensors in terms of a defrost-control method. Tests were conducted in a calorimeter room under the heating with the defrost-performance test conditions described in KS C 9306. Accordingly, the photoelectric technology is a competitive defrost-control method that can precisely control the operational defrost cycle using the output voltages that are proportional to the frost height. The heating period is gradually reduced because the complex defrost-control method, for which the sensors initiate the defrosting process and the defrosting process is terminated by the time parameter, could not adjust the net defrosting time by itself. Therefore, a complex defrost-control method, for which the photoelectric sensors start the defrosting process and it is terminated by the temperature parameter, is preferred because of the adjustment of the net defrosting time. Regardless of the defrost-control method, the first defrosting cycle is activated earlier than the times that are determined in the second and third cycles and so on, because the first operation cycle can decide the characteristics of the subsequent cycle.

  • Manual and predictive defrosting method is used in current refrigerators, which have several problems in terms of energy consumption and efficiency. fuming the defrosting system on by the amount of frost remains to be an important problem which has to be improved by refrigerator manufacturers. The sensing of the amount of frost by FDS(Frost Detecting Sensor) and its proper mounting point are investigated in the paper. Also the realization of actual defrosting system through experiments of operation, energy consumption and sensing mechanism is presented.

  • One of the problems in a refrigerator operation is the frost formation on a cold surface of the evaporator. The frost layer is formed by the sublimation of water vapor when the surface temperature is below the freezing point. This frost layer is usually porous and formed on the cold surface of the evaporator. The frost layer on the surface of a evaporator will make side effect such as thermal resistance. However, these important factors have not been used in determining the defrosting period. Therefore, the proper defrosting operation period based on the new defrosting method is very important, and make a comparison between conventional method like electric defrost and new method in compression work, evaporation pressure, evaporation temperature.

  • In a cold chain, the refrigerator is also employed for defrosting, by using an electric heater, which consumes 15% of the power for the system operation. In this study, the condensation heat of the refrigerant was suggested as the heat source of defrosting heat, instead of that from an electric defrost heater. The heat for defrosting was stored to a phase change material (PCM, NMP : $52^{\circ}C$) in thermal storage, and was periodically supplied to the evaporator by a circulation loop of brine. As a result, a defrost time by the PCM was obtained that was less than or equal to that by the electric heater. Moreover, power consumption during defrosting was saved by up to 99% of that of the electric heater.

  • Air-source heat pumps are widely used in winter as heating units due to their higher efficiency compared to electronic heaters or gas fired equipment. However, the air-source heat pump can cause discomfort during periodic defrosting operations. In this study, a PCM unit for continuous heating was adopted to solve this problem. The PCM unit consisted of a PCM, a heat exchanger, and control valves. It was installed between the outdoor and indoor units. The performance of the proposed system was measured during both defrosting and heating operations. The indoor unit showed an average leaving temperature of $26^{\circ}C$ after adopting the PCM unit for continuous heating during the defrosting operation.

  • Heat pumps come into wide use because high energy efficiency can be obtained and diverse heat sources like geothermal heat, waste heat and air are available. It is necessary for an air source heat pump to defrost in order to remove frost on the surfaces of an outdoor heat exchanger. It is impossible for continuous heating if reverse cycle operation is used as defrosting method, furthermore it causes the degradation of COP. In this study an fin-tube heat exchanger with three rows was used as an outdoor coil. One row among three rows of the heat exchanger was used like a condenser in order to remove frost on it, the others were used as evaporator to accomplish continuous heating. Each row was switched in order from a condenser to an evaporator in specified time interval. Tests were carried out during minimum 180 minutes at the defrost-heating test condition(dry bulb temperature $2^{\circ}C$, wet bulb temperature $1^{\circ}C$) described in KS C 9306. Time-averaged COP was about 20% higher than that of conventional defrosting method.

  • Experimental study was performed to understand the operation of an on-site showcase working in a super discount store. Inlet and outlet temperatures of evaporator, condenser, expansion valve and compressor were measured for both air and refrigerant sides. Electric power consumption of compressors, defrosting heaters, cooling water pumps and etc. were measured. The operating characteristics of the showcase system under various working conditions were analyzed and discussed. During the defrosting process, the air temperature inside the showcase increased to $15^{\circ}C$, which gave harmful effect to the frozen food. The collected data will serve as valuable information for diagnosing and improving the performance of showcases.

  • To analyze and verify the effect of replacing thermal storage heater by a cascade cycle heat pump using midnight electricity was installed and tested at a customer's house in Wonju, Korea. The electric night storage heater is consist of 30kW electric heater and 2,700 liters of thermal storage water tank to supply hot water for warming house floor. The power for electric heater was cut off and hot water was only generated by cascade cycle heat pump. Current thermal storage water tank was not eliminated and electric heater wiring was modified. Some operation logic of the heat pump was also modified for proper operation. The required capacity of the heat pump and hot water temperature for given warming condition were estimated. The estimated capacity of heat pump was about 19kW and estimated hot water temperature for proper heating was at least $75^{\circ}C$.
