Elastic deformations of an infinitely long strip and a beam loaded by uniform pressure upon their upper surfaces, with the fixed-free end dondition, are considered within the range of small strains. All local governing equations are satisfied up to first order in strains, and to take into account the higher order terms neglected in the local governing equations, the overall equilibrium is imposed exactly up to the leading order. The success of the approach relies upon the semi-inverse method and the decomposition of deformations in which the classical linear theory guides the solution. The solution bridges the gap between the two extremes-the classical solutions valid only for infinitesimal deformations and the solutions form the technical theories for deformations with large rotations. The solutions may be used to confirm the technical theories and to verify numerical solutions obtained from finite element analysis.

This paper presents a model of the elastic curve for rectangular beams with straight haunches under uniformly distributed load and moments in the ends considering the bending and shear deformations (Timoshenko Theory) to obtain the deflections and rotations on the beam, which is the main part of this research. The traditional model of the elastic curve for rectangular beams under uniformly distributed load considers only the bending deformations (Euler-Bernoulli Theory). Also, a comparison is made between the proposed and traditional model of simply supported beams with respect to the rotations in two supports and the maximum deflection of the beam. Also, another comparison is made for beams fixed at both ends with respect to the moments and reactions in the support A, and the maximum deflection of the beam. Results show that the proposed model is greater for simply supported beams in the maximum deflection and the traditional model is greater for beams fixed at both ends in the maximum deflection. Then, the proposed model is more appropriate and safe with respect the traditional model for structural analysis, because the shear forces and bending moments are present in any type of structure and the bending and shear deformations appear.
The thermal deformation of the contact seal components has been analyzed using the finite element method. The temperature distributions, the thermal deformations and contact stresses are solved numerically for the contact surface with wear coning effects. The thermal deformation is always shown to distort the sealing surface along the radius of the seal ring. The results show that the deformations of inner radius side are significant compared with those of outer radius. Thus, the thermal deformation due to thermal heatings may promote the coned face wear or wear related thermal cracks at the contacting face of the seal ring component.

Unsteady-state temperature distributions and thermal deformations of a high presision spindle are stueied in this paper. Thress dimensional model is built for analysis, and the amount of heat transfer coefficient are estimated. Temperature distributions and thermal deformations of a model are analyzed using the finite element method and the thermal boundary values. Numerical results are compared with the measured data. The results show that the thermal deformations and the temperature distributions of a high precision machine spindle can be reasonably estimated using the three dimensional model and the finite element method, and that the temperature rise by the heat generation of the bearing is effectively lowered by cooling of the shaft and the housing of a machine tool spindle.

Bond of deformed type of GFRP rebar, which has deformations resembles that of ordinary steel rebar, to concrete was investigated experimentally and numerically in this paper. Due to the lower stiffness and strength in shear, surface deformations do not fully works in bond with surrounding concrete. In this paper, the effective surface deformation height of GFRP rebar with ribs was determined based on experimental and numerical results.
Deformations of bridge deck ends on abutments or on transition between bridge decks can cause extreme deformations on track. Especially, since slab track is fixed onto the bridge deck slab on concrete slab track-installed bridges, deformations of bridge deck ends directly affect the track behavior, and thus these interactions can bring about the premature failure of rail fastenings or other deteriorations to lower the serviceability. In this study, a foreign standard to evaluate forces on track components caused by the track-bridge interactions and the serviceability of bridge deck ends is investigated, and for the real bridges, the serviceability of bridge deck ends according to several parameters of bridge and track is analyzed. It is found that arrangements and spring coefficients of bridge bearings, as well as distance between bridge bearing and last rail support, support spacings, rail support spring coefficient, are very important parameters.
The objective of this study is to estimate the mechanical behavior in bending and the anatomical changes of wood under several deflection rates. Sample specimens of water-saturated Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) were stressed to rupture under several deflection rates. Mechanical properties of wood such as modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture and stress at proportional limit, and anatomical changes affected by deflection rates were estimated. Microscopic observations on compression side of the test specimens when the specimen was loaded to rupture were carried out by the SEM (scanning electron microscopy). The results are summarized as follows: 1. The mechanical properties of wood were affected by variations of the deflection rates. The modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR) and stress at proportional limit were in proportion to the logarithm of deflection rates. 2. The deflection of wood at rupture in bending increased as deflection rates decreased. 3. The variations of the microscopic deformations of sample specimens were closely related to the deflection of wood at rupture. In case of largely deflected wood by maximum bending load, severe and abundant microscopic deformations were observed.

During the last decade several different methods have been proposed for the estimation of thermal deformations in the line heating process. These are mainly based on the assumption of residual strains in the heat-affected zone or simulated relations between heating conditions and residual deformations. However these results were restricted in the application from the too simplified heating conditions or the shortage of the data. The purpose of this paper is to develop a simulator of thermal deformation in the line heating using the artificial neural network. Two neural network predicting the maximum temperature and deformations at the heating line are studied. Deformation data from the line heating experiments are used for learning data for the network. It was observed that thermal deformation predicted by the neural network correlate well with the experimental result.

This work is concerned with various planar deformations of an isotropic sandwich beam, which generally consists of three layers: two stiff skin layers and one soft core layer. When one layer of the sandwich beam is modeled as a beam, the variational-asymptotic method is rigorously used to construct a zeroth-order beam model, which is similar to a generalized Timoshenko beam model capable of capturing the transverse shear deformations but still carries out the zeroth-order approximation. To analyze the planar sandwich beam, the sum of the energies of the two skin layers and one core layer is then formulated with different material and geometric properties and represented by a universal beam model in terms of the core-layer kinematics through interface displacement and stress continuity conditions. As a preliminary validation, two extreme examples are presented to demonstrate the capability and accuracy of this present approach.
