  • The nondimensional differential equations governing the buckling loads of tapered columns and its houndarv conditions are derived, in which the effects of shear deformations are included. These equations are solved numerically using a numerical integration technique and a bracketing method to obtain the buckling loads of columns. Four types of cross-sectional shape with clamped-free end constraint are used in the numerical examples. The parametric studies of shear deformation effects on the buckling loads such as cross-sectional shape factor, shear coefficient, ratio of modulus of elasticity, slenderness ratio and section ratio are reported in tables and figures.

  • The ability of an electroactive polymer, IPMC (Ionic Polymer Metal Composites,) to produce electric charge under mechanical deformations may be exploited for the development of next generation of energy harvesters. Two different electrode types (gold and platinum) were employed for the experiments. The sample was tested under dynamic conditions, produced through programmed shaking. In order to evaluate the potential of IPMC for dry condition, these samples were treated with ionic liquid. Three modes of mechanical deformations (bending, tension and shear) were analyzed. Experimental results clearly indicate that IPMCs are attractive applicants for energy harvesting, with inherent advantages like flexibility, low cost, negligible maintenance and virtually infinite longevity. Besides, preliminary energy harvesting model of IPMC has been formulated based upon the work of previous investigators (Newbury 2002, Newbury and Leo 2002, Lee, et al. 2005, Konyo, et al. 2004) and the simulation results reciprocate experimental results within acceptable error.

  • Computing the natural-looking interpolation of different shapes is a fundamental problem of computer graphics. It is proved by some researchers that such an interpolation can be achieved by pursuing the isometry. In this paper, a novel coordinate system that is invariant under isometries is defined. The coordinate system can easily be converted from the global vertex coordinates. Furthermore, the global coordinates can be efficiently recovered from the new coordinates by simply solving two sparse least-squares problems. Since the proposed coordinate system is invariant under isometries, then transformations such as global rigid trans-formations, articulated posture deformations, or any other isometric deformations, do not change the coordinate values. Therefore, shape interpolation can be done in this framework without being affected by the distortions caused by the isometry.

  • In the past few years, the nondestructive inspection technology has greatly developed due to the increased necessity to gain a complete understanding of the bridge behavior. Especially, the deformations of bridges contain a lot of informations about its health state. By measuring these deformations it is possible to analyze the loading and aging behavior of the structure. However, the current methods (such as LVDT, dial gage, optical displacement tranceducer, etc) are often of changeable application on site and have the limitations of installation. In this paper, the classical beam theory was reviewed and the deflections of structure are estimated using measured strain which is easy to acquire. The applicability of this algorithm is verified by a preliminary steel beam test and two types of concrete beam tests. Also fiber optic sensors as well as resistive strain gages were installed in the concrete beams to establish the applicability of fiber optic sensors in the field of civil engineering.

  • Recently, various types of flexible devices such as flexible displays, batteries, e-skins and solar cell panels have been reported. Most of the researches focus on the development of high performance flexible device. However, to realize these flexible devices, the long-term reliability should be guaranteed during the repeated deformations of flexible devices because the direct mechanical stress would be applied on the electronic devices unlike the rigid Si-based devices. Among various materials consisting electronics devices, metal electrode is one of the weakest parts against mechanical deformation because the mechanical and electrical properties of metal films degrade gradually due to fatigue damage during repeated deformations. This article reviews the researches of fatigue behavior of thin metal film, and introduces the methods to enhance the reliability of metal electrode for flexible device.

  • In this study a stretching-mapping method is proposed for calculating the materials' stretching exponents, which are to be used in quantification of the mixing effect. In this method, the mapping tensor associated with the deformation of each fluid material is first obtained. Then deformations of a lot of materials are obtained by applying the mapping tensor. The local stretching rates and their space-average values are next computed with the mapped deformations. Application to a simple time-periodic flow within a cavity shows that the method is indeed effective compared with the conventional method; i.e. the mapping method is fast and yields the same results as the conventional one.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develop the 2-Dim Lagrangian Hydrocode for the analysis of large deformations of solids with implementation of the contact algorithm. First, th e governing equations are discretized into a system of algebraic equations. For more accurate and robust contact force computation. the defense node contact algorithm was adopted and implemented. For the verification of the code developed, two cases are carried out; the Taylor-Impact test and two bodies impact. The von -Mises criterion is implemented into the code with the Shock equation of state. The simulation results show a good agreement compared with the published experimental data and results from the commercial code. It is necessary to implement several material models and failure models for applications to different impact and penetration problems.

  • Thermocapillary convection in an open cylindrical annulus heated from the inside wall is investigated by two-dimensional numerical simulations. The deformable free surface is obtained as a solution of the coupled transport equations at fixed Prandtl and aspect ratio. Only steady convection can be realized in this axisymmetric computations with either non-deformable or deformable surfaces. Dynamic free-surface deformations do not induce transitions to oscillatory convection even at large Reynolds numbers. Free surfaces are convex near the cold wall due to the stagnation point, and concave near the hot wall. Free surface deformation increases with increasing Ca at a fixed Re. Two peaks appear at the free surface with low Re, while additional ripples, four peaks, occur at larger Re. Thermocapillary convection in the open annulus interior is insensitive to variations in Ca.

  • Finite element analysis of welding processes, which entail phase evolution, heat transfer and deformations, is considered in this paper. Attention focuses on numerical implementation of the thermo-elastic-plastic constitutive equation proposed by Leblond in consideration of the transformation plasticity. Based upon the multiplicative decomposition of deformation gradient, hyperelastic formulation is employed for efficient numerical integration, and the algorithmic consistent moduli for elastic-plastic deformations including transformation plasticity are obtained in the closed form. The convergence behavior of the present implementation is demonstrated via a couple of numerical examples.

  • A general structural model, which is an extension of the Vlassov theory, is developed for the analysis of composite rotor blades with elastic couplings. A comprehensive analysis applicable to both thick-and thin-walled composite beams, which can have either open- or closed profile is formulated. The theory accounts for the effects of elastic couplings, shell wall thickness, and transverse shear deformations. A semi-complementary energy functional is used to account for the shear stress distribution in the shell wall. The bending and torsion related warpings and the shear correction factors are obtained in closed form as part of the analysis. The resulting first order shear deformation theory describes the beam kinematics in terms of the axial, flap and lag bending, flap and lag shear, torsion and torsion-warping deformations. The theory is validated against experimental results for various cross-section beams with elastic couplings.
