  • The die for cold forging gets a very high axial load and radial pressure during processing and hence deforms considerably in the radial direction. This radial deformation of die becomes a important factor influencing the dimensional accuracy of a product. In order to obtain the product with highly accurate dimension, therefore, it is essential to acquire some information on elastic deformation of the die and the product. The study has been performed for the relation of the deformation between the die and the product in backward extrusion. The strain of the die has been given by the simple experiment using the strain gauges attached to the outer surface of the die. Also the history of the deformation of the die and the product has been given by the experiment and Lames' formula. The results has been compared with the previous another method. The study has given useful results for the deformation history of the die and the product through the experiment and Lame's formula in backward extrusion, which can be applied in the die design for the product with accurate dimension.

  • This study analyzes about poclain bucket through fatigue durability analysis. Maximum equivalent stress and total deformation are shown at the lower of bucket and edge part respectively. Among the cases of nonuniform fatigue loads, 'SAE bracket history' with the severest change of load becomes most unstable but 'Sample history' becomes most stable. In case of 'Sample history' with the average stress of -10000Pa to 5000MPa and the amplitude stress of 0 to 6000MPa, the possibility of maximum damage becomes 3%. This stress state can be shown with 5 or 6 times more than the damage possibility of 'SAE bracket history' or 'SAE transmission'. The structural result of this study can be effectively utilized with the design of poclain bucket by investigating prevention and durability against fatigue damage.

  • The hybrid Cartesian/immersed boundary method is applied to simulate fluid-structure interaction of a two-dimensional orbiting flexible foil. The elastic deformation of the flexible foil is modelled based on the dynamic equation of a thin-plate. At each time step, the locations and velocities of the Lagrangian control points on the flexible foil are used to reconstruct the boundary conditions for the flow solver based on the hybrid staggered/non-staggered grid. To test the developed code, the flow fields around a flapping elliptical wing are calculated. The time history of the vertical force component and the evolution of the vorticity fields are compared with recent other computations and good agreement is achieved. For the orbiting flexible foil, the vorticity fields are compared with those of the case without the deformation. The combined effects of the angle of attack and the orbit on the deformation are investigated. The grid independency study is carried out for the computed time history of the deformation at the tip.

  • Permanent deformation plays a key role in performance based earthquake resistant design. In order to estimate permanent deformation after earthquake, it is essential to secure reliable response history analysis(RHA) as well as earthquake scenario. This study focuses on permanent deformation of an inverted T-type wall under earthquake. The study is composed of two separate parts. The first one is on the verification of RHA and the second one is on an effect of input earthquake motion. The former is discussed in this paper and the latter in the companion paper. The verification is conducted via geotechnical dynamic centrifuge test in prototype scale. Response of wall stem, ground motions behind the wall obtained from RHA matched pretty well with physical test performed under centrifugal acceleration of 50g. The rigorously verified RHA is used for parametric study to investigate an effect of input earthquake motion selection in the companion paper.

  • How have they preserved the regional historic buildings in Korea? Do they preserve the original value as a historic building. Are there any artificial deformations deteriorating the quality of the buildings? Is the regional system for preservation effective agalnst the artificial deformations of the buildings? These questions are involved in the purposes of this paper. I investigated the historic buildings designated by Kyong-Nam provincial government. As the resuit, variouse patterns of artificial deformation were found. I found that the deformations may deteriorate the original quality of historic building, and it is related somehow to the limitations of regional system for preservation. So I suggest some alternative ideas for preserving the quality of historic buildings against artificial deformation : a. Present system for preservation is not effective for preserving various architectural value such as urban context and landscape, site planning techniques, function of a space, etc. Regional system should be revised for preserving their architectural value or meaning. b. Historic buildings should be classified and should have proper protecting area according to each architectural values or meanings, respectibly: Historic buildings with Urban context and landscape Historic buildings as a part of a complex Historic buildings as a behavorial setting. c. Historic buildings should be graded based on their quality. And standard and criteria for acceptable deformations should be established. d. Periodical inspections by experts should be carried out to check out the deformation.

In order to investigate the effect of an input earthquake motion on the permanent deformation, three bins of spectral matched real earthquake records with different magnitude, regions, epicentral distance are constructed. Parametric study was performed using the verified RHA through the companion paper for each earthquake records in the bins. The most influential parameter affecting permanent displacement is magnitude. The other parameters describing earthquake motion are not significant enough to increase permanent displacement of the inverted T-type wall except for energy related parameters(AI, CI, SEI).

  • A new type of fabricated subway station construction technology can effectively solve these problems. For a new type of metro structure form, it is necessary to clarify its mechanical properties, especially the seismic performance. A soil-structure elastoplastic finite element model is established to perform three-dimensional nonlinear dynamic time-history analysis based on the first fabricated station structure-Yuanjiadian station of Changchun Metro Line 2, China. Firstly, the nonlinear seismic response characteristics of the fabricated and cast-in-place subway stations under different seismic wave excitations are compared and analyzed. Then, a comprehensive analysis of several important parameters that may affect the seismic response of fabricated subway stations is given. The results show that the maximum plastic strain, the interlayer deformation, and the internal force of fabricated station structures are smaller than that of cast-in-place structure, which indicates that the fabricated station structure has good deformation coordination capability and mechanical properties. The seismic responses of fabricated stations were mainly affected by the soil-structure stiffness ratio, the soil inertia effect, and earthquake load conditions rarely mentioned in cast-in-place stations. The critical parameters have little effect on the interlayer deformation but significantly affect the joints' opening distance and contact stress, which can be used as the evaluation index of the seismic performance of fabricated station structures. The presented results can better understand the seismic responses and guide the seismic design of the fabricated station.

  • This study aims at the structural analysis with fatigue according to the configuration of railway vehicle wheel. Maximum equivalent stress or deformation is shown at the lower face in contact with wheel and rail. As model B has the maximum stress or deformation which becomes lower than model A, model B is shown to have more durability than model A. Among the cases of nonuniform fatigue loads, 'SAE bracket history' with the severest change of load becomes most unstable but 'Sample history' becomes most stable. In case of 'Sample history' with the average stress of 0 to $-10^{11}$ Pa and the amplitude stress of 0 to $10^{10}$ Pa, the possibility of maximum damage becomes 3%. This stress state can be shown with 6 times more than the damage possibility of 'SAE Bracket history' or 'SAE transmission'. The structural result of this study can be effectively utilized with the design of railway vehicle wheel by prevention and durability against its damage.

  • A $C^{0}$ continuous displacement finite element method based on a higher-order shear deformation theory is employed in the prediction of the transient response of laminated composite plates subjected to low-velocity impact. A modified contact law was applied to calculate the contact force during impact. The discrete element chosen is a nine-noded quadrilateral with 5 degree-of-freedom per node. The Wilson-.theta. time integration algorithm is used for solving the time dependent equations of the impactor and the central difference method was adopted to perform time integration of the plate. Numerical results, including the contact force history, deflection, and velocity history, are presented. Comparisons of numerical results using a higher order theory and a first-order theory show that using a higher order theory provides more accurate results. Effects of boundary condition, impact velocity, and mass of the impactors are also discussed.d.

  • The purpose of this study is to make out a history of the coastline deformation with annual aerial photos of the target area and to suggest an efficient method for interpreting the coastline deformation. First, there were difficulties in obtaining annual aerial photos of an identical area as well as collecting periodical datum because of too much change of the real area during more than 27 years. Besides the past aerial photo is inferior to the latest one in quality. So there is nothing but to exclude an accuracy evaluation of the ortho photo. Taken into account the extent of the coastline change for 27 years is more than 10M and the all errors of the ortho image is included in this extent, both an accuracy and an error are ignored. The result of this study show that the coastline in the sea area of Namhangjin maintain advanced forward the ocean and keeps on moving with maintaining fairly wider shape of balance beach. Also The coastline deformation off l㎞ from the estuary is greatly irregular, which means the erosion of the sea in this area is in progress. The latest data being the aerial photo in 1996, it is difficult to find out the current conditions of a coastal erosion. However, considered the construction of a breakwater in Anmok Harbor is going on, the beach erosion becomes more accelerative recently. The aerial photos of the present Namhangjin's situation will make it possible to understand the history of the coastline change more accurately.
