It is a common failure type that high-filled embankment slope sideslips. The deformation mechanism and factors influencing the sideslip of embankment slope is the key to reduce the probability of this kind of engineering disaster. Taking Liujiawan high-filled embankment slope as an example, the deformation and failure characteristics of embankment slope and sheet-pile wall are studied, and the factors influencing instability are analyzed, then the correlation of deformation rate of the anti-slide plies and each factor is calculated with multivariate linear regression analysis. The result shows that: (1) The length of anchoring segment is not long enough, and displacement direction of embankment and retaining structure are perpendicular to the trend of the highway; (2) The length of the cantilever segment is so large that the active earth pressures behind the piles are very large. Additionally, the surface drainage is not smooth, which leads to form a potential sliding zone between bottom of the backfill and the primary surface; (3) The thickness of the backfill and the length of the anti-slide pile cantilever segment have positive correlation with the deformation whereas the thickness of anti-slide pile through mudstone has a negative correlation with the deformation. On the other hand the surface water is a little disadvantage on the embankment stability.

LIPCA (LIghtweight Piezo-composite Curved Actuator) is an actuator device which is lighter than other conventional piezoelectric ceramic type actuator. LIPCA is composed of a piezoelectric ceramic layer and fiber reinforced light composite layers, typically a PZT ceramic layer is sandwiched by a top fiber layer with low CTE (coefficient of thermal expansion) and base layers with high CTE. LIPCA has curved shape like a typical THUNDER (thin-layer composite unimorph feroelectric driver and sensor), but it is lighter an than THUNDER. Since the curved shape of LIPCA is from the thermal deformation during the manufacturing process of unsymmetrically laminated lay-up structure, an analysis for the thermal deformation and residual stresses induced during the manufacturing process is very important for an optimal design to increase the performance of LIPCA. To investigate the thermal deformation behavior and the induced residual stresses of LIPCA at room temperature, the curvatures of LIPCA were measured and compared with those predicted from the analysis using the classical lamination theory. A methodology is being studied to find an optimal stacking sequence and geometry of LIPCA to have larger specific actuating displacement and higher force. The residual stresses induced during the cooling process of the piezo-composite actuators have been calculated. A lay-up geometry for the PZT ceramic layer to have compression stress in the geometrical principal direction has been designed.
Recently, shape analysis of human organs has achieved much attention, owing to its potential to localize structural abnormalities. For a group-wise shape analysis, it is important to accurately restore the shape of a target structure in each subject and to build the inter-subject shape correspondences. To accomplish this, we propose a shape modeling method based on the Laplacian deformation framework. We deform a template model of a target structure in the segmented images while restoring subject-specific shape features by using Laplacian surface representation. In order to build the inter-subject shape correspondences, we implemented the progressive weighting scheme for adaptively controlling the rigidity parameter of the deformable model. This weighting scheme helps to preserve the relative distance between each point in the template model as much as possible during model deformation. This area-preserving deformation allows each point of the template model to be located at an anatomically consistent position in the target structure. Another advantage of our method is its application to human organs of non-spherical topology. We present the experiments for evaluating the robustness of shape modeling against large variations in shape and size with the synthetic sets of the second cervical vertebrae (C2), which has a complex shape with holes.
Dimensional defects of castings are mainly due to the stresses and strains caused by a nonuniform temperature distribution and phase transformation during solidification and cooling, and by mechanical constraint between the mold and casting. It is, however, nearly impossible to trace movements of the casting and mold during solidification and cooling by experimental measurements for castings with complex shape. Two and three dimensional deformation analyses of the casting and the mold were performed using commercial finite element code, MARC. It was possible to calculate deformation and temperature distribution in the casting and mold simultaneously. Cooling curves of the casting obtained by calculation were close to that measured in the field since it was possible to treat latent heat evolution of the casting which could be divided into two parts, primary and eutectic parts. Mold bent inward just after pouring due to the temperature gradient across the mold thickness, and mold returned to its previous position with time. Plastic deformation occurred at the part of the casting where solidification was slow.

For the rational aseismatic design of a structure constructed on the ground which has weakness for liquefaction or flow, it is necessary to predict ground deformation as well as force acting on the ground. In general, the prediction of liquefaction is based on solid mechanics while the prediction of flow is basis of fluid mechanics. Since liquefaction and flow occur continuously, unified analysis methods have been developed. Among of them is Rue-elasto plastic model that is based on small deformation theory. This methods, however, is not adequate for such a large deformable ground condition. In this paper, a large deformaion theory using the finite deformation theory proposed by Dietal and the updated lagrangian method is presented. In addition, the applicability of the theory is verified by 1-d consolidation analysis and flow tests.

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is used as a scaffold for cell culture. Because both the stress and strain acting on the substrate and the hemodynamic environment are important for studying mechano-transduction of cellular function, the traction force of the surface of a substrate has been measured using fluorescence images of particle distribution. In this study, deformation of the cross-sectional plane of a PDMS block was measured by correlating particle image distributions to validate the particle image strain measurement technique. Deformation was induced by a cone indentor and a shearing parallel plate. Measured deformations from particle image distributions were in agreement with the results of a computational structure analysis using the finite-element method. This study demonstrates that the particle image correlation method facilitates measurement of deformation of a polymer scaffold in the cross-sectional plane.

The welding deformation of a hull structure in the shipbuilding industry is Inevitable at each assembly stage. The geometric inaccuracy caused by the welding deformation tends to preclude the introduction of automation and mechanization and needs the additional man-hours for the adjusting work at the following assembly stage. To overcome this problem, a distortion control method should be applied. For this purpose, it is necessary to develop an accurateprediction method which can explicitly account for the influence of various factors on the welding deformation. The validity of the prediction method must be also clarified through experiments. This paper is aimed at deriving the simple prediction model for fillet welding deformations. For this purpose, the thermal elasto-plastic analysis varying the welding conditions and plate thickness has been performed. On the basis of numerical results, the formulae for angular distortion and transverse shrinkage have been derived through the regression analysis. Experimental work has been also carried out to clarify the validity of numerical results. It has been found that the numerical results show a good agreement with those of experiments
The temperature distribution and subsequent permanent deformation of SS400 carbon steel plate subjected to an induction-based line heating process were studied by a numerical method involving coupled 3-D electromagnetic-thermal-structural analysis. The numerical study revealed that the amount of permanent deformation is strongly related to the Joule loss caused by such process conditions as input power and moving speed of the heat source. To validate the numerical analysis results, line heating experiments were carried out with a high frequency(HF) induction heating(IH) equipment capable of bending thick plate with the moving accuracy of ${\pm}0.1mm$ in heating coil position. The amount of permanent deformation increased with decreasing moving speed and increasing input power.

An improved analysis model for material nonlinearity induced by elasto-plastic deformation and damage including large strain response was proposed. The elasto-plastic-damage constitutive model based on the continuum damage mechanics approach was adopted to overcome limitations of the conventional plastic theory, which can manage the anisotropic tonsorial damages evolved during time-independent plastic deformation process of materials. Updated Lagrangian finite element formulation for elasto-plastic damage coupling problem including large deformation, large rotation and large strain problems was completed to develop a numerical model which can predict all kinds of structural nonlinearities and damage rationally. Finally, a finite element analysis code for the 2-dimensional plane problem was developed and the applicability and validity of the numerical model was investigated through some numerial examples. Calculations showed reasonable results in both geometrical nonlinear problem due to large deformation and material nonlinearity including the damage effect.

This paper presents the simplified welding distortion analysis method to predict the welding deformation of both plate and stiffener in fillet welds. Currently, the methods based on equivalent thermal strain like Strain as Direct Boundary (SDB) has been widely used due to effective prediction of welding deformation. Regarding the fillet welding, however, those methods cannot represent deformation of both members at once since the temperature degree of freedom is shared at the intersection nodes in both members. In this paper, we propose new approach to simulate deformation of both members. The method can simulate fillet weld deformations by employing composite shell element and using different thermal expansion coefficients according to thickness direction with fixed temperature at intersection nodes. For verification purpose, we compare of result from experiments, 3D thermo elastic plastic analysis, SDB method and proposed method. Compared of experiments results, the proposed method can effectively predict welding deformation for fillet welds.
