  • Weak persistence of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) under continuous grazing has been limited its availability in the mixture with grasses. The experiment was done to determine the effect of defoliation interval on $N_2$ fixation. nitrogen and carbohydrate partitioning of contrasting white clover cultivars. Individual plants of Osceola(large leaf), Grasslands Huia (me-dium leaf), and Aberystwyth S184 (small leaf) were grown in 15cm plastic pot containing a 1:2:1 soil:sand:Promix mixture for 55 days, and then clipped to remove all fully expanded leaves every 7, 14 or 28 days. To measure the cultivar response, plants were sampled immediately before final harvest (0) and on 1, 3, 7, 14, and 28 days after the final harvest, and then seperated leaves and petioles, stolons and roots for chemical analysis. Total nonstructural carbohydrate (TNC) concentrations of stolons and roots, and nitrogen con-centration of all the fractions inclined with increased defoliation interval. Those of Osceola, large leaved, were greater than the other cultivars showing different partitioning patterns between stolons and roots. Concentration of TNC was less in roots than in the other fractions while that of nitrogen declined in the order of leaves and petioles, roots and stolons. $N_2$ fixation rate of larger leaved cultivar, Osceola, was higher than that of smaller leaved cultivar. TNC and nitrogen concentrations of all the fractions and $N_2$ fixation rate were reduced as defoliation was imposed, defoliation interval declined or regrowing period become shorter. The partitioning patterns of TNC and nitrogen among the fractions were modified by defoliation interval and cultivars.

  • This experiment was conducted to estimate the effect of defoliation on the weight of 1,000 kernels, the rate of ripened grains and the weight of an ear of Yusin and Mylang No. 15 after heading. The resnlts obtained were as follows : 1. The weight of 1,000 kenels, the rate of ripend grains and the weight of an ear were significantly decreased by various defoliation. But there was not found significant difference in 1,000 kernel weight of Mylang No. 15 between each treatment of defoliation. 2. When lower leaves were remained, the weight of 1,000 kernels, the rate of ripened grains and the weight of an ear were more influence than when higher leaves were remained. And the same results were obtained when two leaves were remained at the different leaf position. In order words, when leaf remained was combined with leaf positioned at upper area, the weight of 1,000 kernels, the rate of ripened grains and the weight of an ear were higher than when the leaf was combined with lower leaves. 3. Even though Yusin was early heading variety and subjected to defoliation later than Mylang No. 15 in terms of total physiological maturity the response to defoliation was higher than that of Mylang No. 15 in the rate of ripened grains and ear weight. The exception was found for the 1,000 kernel weight. The result obtained indicated that leaves of Yusin influence more the weight of 1,000 kernels, the rate of ripened grains and the weight of an ear to the later stage than that of Mylang No. 15.

  • For the purpose of sweet potato varietal improvement, yulmi, shinyulmi, gunmi, hongmi, and seonmi, whose source and sink are different, were cultivated at different planting densities, and then defoliation at initial stage of tuberous root weight increase on the relation of source and sink was observed as follows. The response of stem and leaf and tuberous root weight by planting density and defoliation rate of sweet potato varieties was different. Stem and leaf weight per m$^2$ increased along with dense planting by the following order; shinyulmi> seonmi> hongmi> gunmi> yulmi. Tuberous root number per m$^2$ was the most at 75$\times$20cm planting density, showing seonmi the most number. The number of stem and leaf and tuberous root increased along with the lowered rate of defoliation. In case of 75$\times$10cm and 75$\times$20cm planting density, tuberous root weight increased by increase of stem and leaf weight up to 50% defoliation and the difference of stem and leaf and tuberous root number was low as defoliation rate increases. The tuberous root and total dry weight matter was the most at 75$\times$20cm planting density. The increase and decrease of source synchronized with those of sink at 75$\times$10cm and 75$\times$20cm, however the relationship occurred less at 75$\times$30cm.

  • An experiment with alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) plants was designed to investigate the changes in non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) contents and the activities of amylolytic enzymes during a regrowth period following defoliation. Sampling from hydroponic grown-plants were carried out at intervals during 24 days of regrowth. Shoot regrowth was very slow during the first 10 days and root growth was depressed after defoliation. Defoliation induced a great decrease in both total sugar and starch contents in taproots during the first 10∼14 days. A major recovery of NSC occurred from day 15. Averaged over sampling dates, the activity of exo-amylase was about 400-fold higher than that of endo-amylase. Exo-amylase activity in defoliate plants slightly increased until day 6 (maximum level) and then decreased. Endo-amylase rapidly increased for the first 4 days after defoliation and slightly increased afterwards to a maximum on day 24. These results showed that increase in amylolytic enzyme activity in taproots coincided with the time of starch utilization during regrowth and that indicated it plays an important role in starch degradation.

  • This experiment was carried out to examine the effects of foliar applications of 100 mg.L$^{-1}$ ethephon mixed with different calcium formulae (10,000 mg.L$^{-1}$ Clef-non, 2,000 mg.L$^{-1}$ Cell-bine, 2,000 mg.L$^{-1}$ Hicalux, and 2,000 mg.L$^{-1}$ calcium acetate monohydrate) on the rind coloration, defoliation and fruit quality of satsuma mandarin cultivated in the plastic greenhouse. Foliar applications of ethephon alone or in mixture with either Clef-non, Cell-bine, Hicalux or calcium acetate monohydrate demonstrated that increased 'a'value of peel chromaticity as compared to the control. The treatments encouraged fruit colour and allowed the harvest date to be predicted. The defoliation ratio decreased considerably by foliar applications of ethephon mixed with Cell-bine or Hicalux. The sugar content of fruit increased by 1.6, 1.54, and 1.54$^{\circ}$Bx with the foliar applications of ethephon, ethephon+Clef-non, and ethephon+Cell-bine, respectively. With the foliar applications of ethephon in mixture with Cell-bine, fruit coloration was accelerated. defoliation was delayed, and fruit quality was improved.

  • Smart-farm has been spreading across Korea to improve the labor efficiency and productivity of greenhouse crops. Although notable improvements have been made in the monitoring technologies and environmental-controlling systems in greenhouses, only a few simple decision-support systems are available for predicting the optimum environmental conditions for crop growth. In this study, a tomato growth model (GreenTom), which was developed by Seoul National University in 1997, was calibrated and validated to examine if the model can be used as a decision-supporting system. The original GreenTom model was not able to simulate artificial defoliation, which resulted in overestimation of the leaf area index in the late growth. Thus, an algorithm for simulating the artificial defoliation was developed and added to the original model. The node development, leaf growth, stem growth, fruit growth, and leaf area index were generally well simulated by the modified model indicating that the model could be used effectively in the decision-making of smart greenhouse.

  • This study was conducted to observe the effects of urea foliar spray to replace soil fertilization on defoliation ratio, shoot growth and fruit setting in satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Marc.). Twice foliar sprays of 1% urea after harvest increased N and chlorophyll contents in leaves, and decreased defoliation during the winter season. The growth of the ovary and spring shoot was stimulated by the twice 0.8% urea foliar spray around the time of bud emergence. In addition, the treatments increased the number of flowers and fruit setting, but didn't influence fruit quality.

  • This study was conducted to examine the effects of defoliation levels during winter season on the yield and soluble solid contents of fruits. To achieve this strawberry 'Seolhyang' cultivated forcingly in the year of 2013 to 2014 as well as 2014 to 2015. The three treatments include periodical removing of leaves remaining 6 fully expanded leaves, those remaining 9 leaves, and only removing of old and infected leaves during the period from early December to end of February. In the early marketable fruit yield until the end of February and total marketable fruit yield, the treatment of non-defoliation was significantly higher than those of the treatment of 6 and 9 leaves in the year of 2014 to 2015 cropping season. Soluble solid contents of fruits among January and March increased significantly as the number of leaves get higher. Soluble solid contents were higher and stable around $12^{\circ}Brix$ in the treatment of non-defoliation. Assimilation of photosynthetic products into plant tissue are insufficient due to the lack of irradiation and short day in winter season forcing cultivation of strawberry. Thus, it is considered to manage the leaves with defoliation for only old and infected leaves from December to February for increasing of fruit yield and improvement of fruit quality.

  • We have studied the responce of nitrogen on the newly bred varieties, Yusin and Milyang #23, and the effects of defoliation at maturing stage on the rate of ripened grains under different nitrogen levels. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. Milyang #23 as well as Tongil was found to be highly nitrogen responsive variety and showed good grain maturing percentage. The number of grain per unit area affected the total yield under the high levels of nitrogen application. The variety, Yusin, was less responsive to nitrogen and had also less leaf area than other varieties under the high level of nitrogen application. Yusin also seemed to have low maturing percentage due to unbalanced ratio between photosynthetic area and size of storage. 2. The low internodes and leaf blade of Yusin and Milyang #15 were grown too much under high levels of nitrogen and these caused more lodging and less light penetration in pant canopy. 3. The effects of defoliation at maturing stage on yield was high under the high levels of nitrogen application, especially when defoliation was done early stage of maturing. The effects of defoliation appeared to be greates in Tongil than in Milyang #15.

  • The Korean flowering cherry is a popular tree. However, the trees have started to defoliate early, including those in Gurye. Thus, it is necessary to identify the causes of the early defoliation and how to manage them. Therefore, the purpose of this study was threefold: 1) to investigate the early defoliation of flowering cherry trees, 2) to identify the differences in growth and flowering of the trees in response to treatment, and 3) to suggest an optimal treatment for the trees. The experiment was conducted in Gurye at a site 3km long with 102 flowering cherry trees along a street. There were three treatments: control, an environmentally friendly insecticide and a disinfectant(treatment 1), and an environmentally friendly insecticide, a disinfectant, and irrigation (treatment 2). The trees in Gurye were compared to trees on Jeju Island. The defoliation rates of the flowering cherry in Gurye were significantly higher than those on Jeju Island at each measurement time. Within Gurye, the defoliation rate was significantly higher in the trees of the control than in the two treatments and only the trees in the control from Gurye had shot-hole disease. Post-treatment, twigs collected from the control during April showed significantly poorer growth, lower numbers of flowering buds per twig, and lower numbers of foliar buds. The trees given treatment 1 showed significantly greater growth, number of total buds, flowering buds per twig, and density of buds than the trees given treatment 2. After analyzing the correlations, it was established that early defoliation led to poorer growth, affecting the flowering of the trees.
