  • As the paradigm shifts in the era of accelerated technological development and technology convergence, the defense sector is pursuing national defense research and development through selection and concentration, as well as the expansion of investments to develop defense science and technology to the highest possible level. In addition to investing heavily in cutting-edge weapons and core technologies that are consistent with the future, the defense sector is also developing investment strategies within a limited budget. In the private sector, the PD system has been introduced in order to maximize the performance of R&D policy and to improve the professionalism and responsibility of planning & management. In accordance with this trend, in the field of defense, the PD system of defense technology with specialization is being promoted, in order to strengthen the task planning capacity and to promote the utilization of private technology. Considering the need for coherent technical support for the core technology developed by R&D, the improvement of open technology planning systems and expansion of inter-civil & technical linkage, the use of the PD system in the defense field is indispensable. In this study, we review similar cases abroad and at home to examine the introduction and management of the PD system for defense technology. This study is based on the current state of the defense technology PD system that is being pursued.

  • This study investigated the effect of Pd on the microstructure, tensile and creep properties of Mg-4Al-2Sn (AT42) alloy at a high temperature for transportation-related industrial applications. AT42-xPd (x = 0, 1 and 2 wt. %) alloys were prepared using a permanent mould casting method. The microstructures of the as-cast alloys were characterized by the presence of the intermetallic phases $Mg_{17}Al_{12}$, $Mg_2Sn$ and $Al_4Pd$. The addition of Pd was found to improve the tensile properties of AT42 at room and at elevated temperatures, and to increase the creep resistance at elevated temperatures. A small amount of Pd could markedly improve the tensile properties of AT42 by means of grain-refinement and the dispersion of secondary phase strengthening. Moreover, the thermally stable phase $Al_4Pd$ effectively improves the creep resistance of AT42 due to the strengthened grain boundaries and the suppressed formation of $Mg_{17}Al_{12}$.

  • This study proposes an evaluation method for time delay function(TDF) of Point Detonation(PD) fuse using underwater explosion and water entry phenomena. Until now, nothing but the naked eyes of an observer or video images have been used to determine whether the TDF of PD fuze is operated or not. The observer has verified the performance of TDF by analysing the shape of the plume formed by underwater explosion. However, it is very difficult to evaluate the TDF of PD fuse by these conventional methods. In order to overcome this issue, we propose a method using underwater sound signal emitted from the underwater explosion of high explosive charge. The result shows that the measured sound signal is in accord with the physical phenomena of water entry of warhead as well as underwater explosion. Also, from the hypothesis test of bubble period, difference on underwater sound analysis between dud event and delay one is proved.

  • A new chattering free PD-sliding mode hybrid control scheme is proposed for robot manipulators. This hybrid controller is composed of a PD controller and a semi-continuous sliding mode controller. It has a good robust performance in reaching mode which does not possess invariance property of sliding mode, and has chattering free characteristics in sliding mode. Thus, the PD-sliding mode hybrid controller has a good robust performance in the whole region. It is shown that the proposed control has a good transient response and trajectory tracking performance for a 2-link SCARA robot manipulator.

  • Recently, there has been demand for the convergence of IT (Information and communication Technologies, ICT) with defense, as has already been achieved in civilian fields such as healthcare and construction. It is expected that completely new and common requirements would emerge from the civilian and military domains and that the shape of war field would change rapidly. Many military scientists forecast that future wars would be network-centric and be based on C4I(Command, Control, Communication & Computer, Intelligence), ISR(Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance), and PGM(Precision Guided Munitions). For realizing the smart defense concept, IT should act as a baseline technology even for simulating a real combat field using virtual reality. In this paper, we propose the concept of IT-based smart defense with a focus on accurate detection in real and cyber wars, effective data communication, automated and unmanned operation, and modeling and simulation.

  • We synthesized energetic prepolymer(2-nitrato ethyl oxirane, NEO) for plastic-bonded explosive and measured its thermodynamic parameters. 2-Nitrato ethyl oxirane(NEO) as a monomer was synthesized from 4-butene-ol, the first-step was preparation of 1-nitrate-3-butene and second-step was synthesized 2-nitrate-ethyl oxirane from 1nitrate-3-butene and then polymerized by cationic ring opening polymerization. The unreacted monomer concentration was measured by GC. The thermodynamic parameters were obtained from the ceiling temperature(Tc) values of 1 mole monomer at each reaction temperature. We varied feed rate of monomer, concentration of initiator and monomer to control molecular weight and polydispersity of perpolymer(NEO). Number average molecular weight(Mn), polydispersity(PD), and glass transition temperature(Tg), viscosity of prepolymer(NEO) were 2000, 1.07, $-55^{\circ}C$ and 300 poise respectively.

  • This article deals with the synthesis and characterization of poly [N-(propargyloxy)phthalimide][poly (POPI)]. The polymerization of POPI was carried out by various transition metal catalysts. $MoCl_5$-based catalysts were found to be more effective than $WCl_6$-based catalysts. However, the polymer yield was relatively low (maximum 35%). The polymerization of POPI by $PdCl_2$ gave poly (POPI) in fair yields in DMF and pyridine. The resulting poly (POPI)s were mostly insoluble in organic solvents. The infrared spectrum of poly (POPI) showed no peak at 2135 $cm^{-1}$ due to acetylenic $C{\equiv}C$ stretching frequency. Instead, the carbon-carbon double bond stretching frequency was observed at 1600-1650 $cm^{-1}$. The TGA thermogram showed that the present poly (POPI) is thermally stable up to $160^{\circ}C.$.

  • A kinematic nonlinear multivariable launcher is modeled of which the azimuth and elevation axes are drived simultaneously and position control systems are designed for this system by the PD and LQG/LTR control methods. Also, the suitable command input fonction is suggested for the desired command following performance and the two control systems with disturbances and load variation are evaluated for the entire operating range by computer simulation. It is found that the two linear controllers can be used for the kinematic nonlinear multivariable launcher in the entire operating range and LQG/LTR controller is more effective for disturbance rejection.

  • During the Late Joseon dynasty, abandoned mountain fortresses were urgently repaired for the operation of foothold mountain fortresses in Gyeongsang-do, during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 and immediately after the Qing Invasion of Korea in 1636. Immediately after the Qing Invasion of Korea, an external fortress wall was built and added to each of Cheonsaeng Fortress and Geumo Fortress to establish a system of protecting locals inside a fortress at important locations for border defense against Japan in the Yeongnam region. Cheonseng Fortress, however, did not have sufficient geographical and protection conditions as a mountain fortress for protecting people inside it; thus, Gasan Fortress was newly built to replace Cheonsaeng Fortress. Geumo and Gasan Fortresses were used in border defense against Japan during the period from King Injo's reign to the end of Joseon Dynasty, because the fortresses served the purpose of defending Nakdonggang River and middle roads located at important roads along the border in the Yeongnam region and because it was possible to quickly repair and use their existing fortress walls and internal facilities, such as middle fortress walls and ponds, that were constructed for long-term protection of locals inside the fortress. In addition, it was found, in this study, that a continuous discussion on how to supplement fortresses led to the reinforcement and improvement of fortress facilities and fortification technology through the application of major strengths of Chinese (Ming) and Japanese fortress systems.

  • In this study, we fabricate 3 wt% $Li_2CO_3$ doped $(Ba,Sr)TiO_3$ thick films on the Ag/Pd bottom electrode printed $Al_2O_3$ substrates for the LTCCs (low temperature co-fired ceramics) applications. From the X-ray diffraction analysis, 3 wt% $Li_2CO_3$ doped BST thick films on the Ag/Pd printed $Al_2O_3$ substrates, which sintered at $900^{\circ}C$, showed perovskite structure without any pyro phase. The dielectric properties of 3 wt% $Li_2CO_3$ doped BST thick films are measured from 1 kHz to 1 MHz. To investigate the electrical properties of 3 wt% $Li_2CO_3$ doped BST thick films, we employ the impedance spectroscopy. The complex impedance of 3 wt% $Li_2CO_3$ doped BST thick films are measured from 20 Hz to 1 MHz at the various temperatures.
